It’s time for another Alumni Spotlight Series! Michael Milkanin has found great success since graduating MDT. Credits include but are not limited to: Kinky Boots (Assistant Dance Captain on Broadway, and Dance Captain in 1st Nat. Tour), as well as Bat Out of Hell.
Here’s what Michael has to say about MDT!
How did BYU MDT prepare you for your career?
-MDT was a complete training ground for me. I had energy and passion, but no technique with nothing in my tool box. It gave me opportunities to hone my abilities into marketable assets to use in the real world.

What do you think is most important to focus on while still in the major? Advice?
- School is to learn and prepare. Learn new skills. Use your time diplomatically. Learn practically so you graduate as an incredible learner. We are in the business of learning new things very quickly and executing them with elegance and grace. Stay focused at school. It's your time to discover how to join the world and slay like the queens we are!

Most valuable or memorable performing experience -TDF (Theater Development Fund) had bought out a matinee of "Kinky Boots" for families with children with learning disabilites and Autism. A special spokesman with autism came in beforehand to talk to us about what to expect. It’s wildly emotional to see a whole theatre of families that usually gets shushed with their child being loud, or who don’t even attend theatre out of fear for public ridicule for their children. They all experienced theatre how they wanted to and their families got to have a full family outing. I was for-sure weeping at the curtain call.

Advice: never ever forget who you are and what you stand for. If you find that to be different than some of the people around you, don't be scared to trust your instincts. You are the only you in the whole world and trying to be like others will deplete us the pleasure of what God has given you to share with the world.

Michael is teaching a masterclass THIS THURSDAY 11/29, from 11:00-11:50am in the BYU Richard’s Building, room 2206! Be sure to take this opportunity to learn from one of our talented alumni! by @byumdt

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT 🤩 Next up is Cayel Tregeagle. Cayel is one of the most captivating performers ever onstage. Some credits include: a season at MTWichita, a season at Mac-Hayden Theatre, Beauty and the Beast at Disneyworld, principle dancer in The Lion King at Disneyworld, and Dance Capt/ Swing for Mickey’s Merriest Celebration (Disneyworld). This summer, he will be joining the cast of Singin’ in the Rain at the MUNY! He is also a member of Actors Equity Association.
How did MDT prepare you for your career?
~ “In all honesty, the program taught me to be an Independent Artist. I know Tim gets on us all the time about it, but it is so true. You have to be able to make choices, and be your own artist and not a clone of anyone else. This career puts you through he ringer so you have to be confident in your own artistry.”
❓
Most important thing to focus on while still in the major?
~
“the most important thing to do in the major is, work harder. There are times when I look back and wish I would have practiced a little more, or knew my choreo a little better, or found the exact placement for that one note. When you think you’re working hard, push yourself even more.”
❓
Most valuable performing experience?
~
“When we were rehearsing Count of Monte Cristo, Jack Murphy, came to a rehearsal and gave Preston Yates and I a brand new scene, and asked for it to be memorized and ready to be seen 4 hours later. However, we were already in rehearsal for the entirety of that time. Every break we got we would run the scene and when Jack saw it later that night he said, “I honestly didn’t think you’d be be able to pull it off”. It was so stressful, but also such a cool opportunity to get new material and have is performance read in a matter of hours.”
❓
What is something you wish you knew about performing while in college?
~ “This career is a marathon, not a sprint. I heard this quote in school, but it couldn’t be more true. The work doesn’t stop after graduation, you have to keep taking classes and working on your craft. The only way to survive in this business is to learn to enjoy the journey and process, not just the destination. “

Next up in our Alumni Spotlight Series is Matthew Davies! Matt is an exceptional triple threat. He has some great advice. A few credits include: Finding Neverland Nat’l Tour, Cinderella Nat’l Tour, 2 seasons at MTWichita, and 1 season at the MUNY.
How did BYU MDT prepare you for your career? “The training is rigorous but its RIGHT. One of the biggest things I took away is hard work. Every step – whether it was a survival job, an audition or a show I was in – requires a lot of you. Mentally, physically and often emotionally. Trust what is asked of you and commit, because it won’t get easier."
❓
What do you think is most important to focus on while still in the major? ~
“Learn to love and be patient with yourself. We are always growing, it’s essential, but our self doubt can kill our dreams much faster than if we simply tried and failed. This quote comes to mind: “We cannot become who we need to be by remaining who are are. – Max DePree”
❓
Most valuable or memorable performing experience? ~
“I’m sure you will get this answer, but truthfully being a Young Ambassador. It is what taught me to forget my selfish reasons for performing and to share a part of myself for the audience. I recall all the times theatre has inspired me – from being a 5 year old, to this current day – and the times I was really moved is when someone gave me a gift of vulnerability, YA’s started that for me.”
❓
What is something you wish you knew about performing in college? ~
“I wish I knew what a valuable asset being a Swing was. Not everyone has the skill set to know and cover 8 tracks + cover leads at the drop of a hat. It can put you in a much smaller talent pool because of the variety of dancing, acting and singing it requires. So learn as much as you can to gain that skill ahead of time.” ❤️

For the next week or so, we are going to spotlight some of our successful BYU MDT alumni, along with some of their bits of knowledge/ advice for aspiring performers! ~
First up is Brian Russell Carey. Brian is an incredible performer AND musician. He recently played the role of Dudley in the NY off-Broadway premiere of Red Roses Green Gold. ~
❓ How did BYU MDT prepare you for your career? “The training at BYU is RESPECTED in New York City. I think I was surprised when I got to the city of how respected it really is. I have friends who see many, many showcases each year and BYU consistently is in the top 5. So - trust the training. It’s good. That Gayle Lockwood ‘Ay - Ah - Ay - Ah’ is legit.” ~
❓What do you think is most important to focus on while still in the major? “You are on your own path. There is room and space enough for everyone at the table. In college / the Utah theatre scene, it can easily feel like you are being put in a box - and sometimes you don’t fit that box! But trust me when I say that there is room and space for everyone in the industry.” ~
❓Most valuable or memorable performing experience: “Honestly I loved being a Young Ambassador. It was such a formative time for me and taught me a lot about myself and how to be a good performer!” Follow him @brianrcarey !☺️☺️ by @byumdt
