Read Camilla McKinnon's experience interning at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington! She's our 3rd place winner of the Summer Selfie Contest!

"I interned at PNNL which sits along the Columbia River. This June, I visited British Columbia and saw where the river begins as a small stream. As the Columbia flows for hundreds of miles, it slowly gathers volume from streams and rainfall, eventually becoming the powerful river that passes PNNL on its way to the Pacific Ocean. My statistics journey has been similar, beginning as something small. When I started interning at PNNL as a freshman, my knowledge was minimal, barely extending beyond calculating summary statistics in R. With each passing year as I added more statistics classes to my repertoire, my knowledge grew. This summer I used machine learning models and image analysis tools to help solve challenges in the nuclear science sector. From unassuming beginnings, my statistics journey has grown like the Columbia River, with a depth I never imagined from the start." by @byustatistics

Here's our 2nd place winner of the Summer Selfie Contest! Read about Liza Muir's internship at the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District 🦟

"This summer, I worked at the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District. I compiled a dataset and analyzed how weather patterns affect mosquito populations across species. Our team received a grant to conduct aerial trials testing mosquito resistance: I recorded results and performed the data analysis after each experiment. Fun fact: Only female mosquitoes bite—they need the protein from blood to lay eggs." by @byustatistics

Congratulations to our first place Summer Selfie Contest winner Carson Ordyna!🥳 Hear about his internship at Massachusetts General Hospital below:

"This summer, I worked as a clinical research assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Our team studied whether patients’ smartwatch biometrics can help train an algorithm to predict postoperative complications. I analyzed patient adherence and produced activity reports with summary statistics. I wrote several Python scripts to automate daily and weekly report generation and distribution." by @byustatistics
