Making butter beans & orzo to my favorite album and artist of 2026 so far. @marklux

💿💿💿 This album’s been on my rotation all year. Out of a lottt of artists coming out of the westcoast scene right now, Mark Lux is one of my favorites. He kills it lyrically and creatively. He’s got style, stage presence, storytelling, artistry. His visuals go insanely hard. Highly recommend this mixtape if you like westcoast rap, TDE, Keem, Az Chike, Vince Staples types.

🫘🌿🍅 Brothy butter beans with garlic, shallot, white wine, veg stock, lemon, grated parmigiano. On some orzo and topped with tomato pangrattato, homemade tomato oil, pea tip sauce, cured egg yolk, more parm & lemon, black pepper. Weekday comfort food.

Big Pun ft. Pavlova with Vanilla Chantilly Cream, Persimmon Puree, Persimmon, and Mint

When I was 12 or 13, my family went on a cruise for my grandma’s 70th birthday. On this ship they had a pavlova on one of the dessert menus that I thought was the greatest thing on earth. I had no idea what it was then, but it was topped with “exotic fruit” and crunchy and sweet and melted in your mouth. I didn’t see another pavlova for years, but I never forgot it and told the kids at school about my new favorite dessert and no one believed me that it existed. It wasn’t until I grew up that I realized this mythical dessert was just a mound of whipped egg whites and sugar, with Dole tropical fruit mix lol.

I’m not using canned fruit, but I topped my pavlova with persimmon. I have the best memories as a kid in Korea when my grandma would peel the skin off a very ripe persimmon (hongsi; 홍시) and I would eat it with a spoon. It’s another dessert I missed a lot, because nobody has the patience to peel the thin persimmon skin with surgical accuracy like my grandma does.

This is a combo of my two childhood memories in a dessert. Other than the brilliant use of alliteration, it doesn’t have a lot to do with Big Pun. But it’s one of my favorite songs + albums to cook to, and I really wanted to show you my favorite vinyl.

ps. Did I whip meringue by hand just to get the “dead in the middle of little italy” line? Yes.

Cooking To My Favorite Songs | Episode 2: Eminem ft. Shrimp Bisque Spaghetti No. 5 🍝

This is my favorite @eminem song.

The lyrics are unhinged, like some dark twisted nursery rhyme that he sings to his baby daughter while dumping his ex-wife’s body in a lake. It’s classic Em, and one of the most creative and unique storytelling in lyrical history imo. Also if you find the original demo, he samples “Just The Two Of Us” by Bill Withers. It’s brilliant. I like to blast this song in the car, speeding down the highway yelling the chorus as whoever’s in the passenger seat glances at me and the back trunk nervously 👹🔪

I love Em’s authenticity, and always thought that’s what made him so creative. His ability to tap into it and embrace his full range of emotions is probably why he was so successful. Most people are unaware or scared of their darker thoughts and emotions, but Em never shied away from them. He made anger and hate just another human emotion to express and transform into something creative, instead of something unacceptable to repress, and it was a breath of fresh air to kids with a lot of emotions and nowhere to go. I think the fact that his music resonated with so many people shows that we hold a lot of negative emotions that we never surface and so never heal.

Excuse the obvious play on “mom’s spaghetti” lol but shoutout to poor Kim. This dish took me five tries to get down but it was one of the best things I made in 2025. I first saw it @carbonis.paris and whenever I can’t try something I really want, I obsess over a way to make it myself. The secret? A little henny and a little sherry.

Anyways while making “Shrimp Bisque Spaghetti No. 5” I was chopping off shrimp heads and the “boo boo on her throat” line made me see the vision ✨

Cooking To My Favorite Songs | Episode 1: Nas - The World Is Yours (ft. Lamb Pappardelle)

🎧 Starting with my all-time favorite song. @nas

Like many people, this was one of the albums that made me reeeally fall in love with hiphop. For me what hit me first was that infusion of jazz on “The World Is Yours”, the music I grew up listening to most at home. The way the Ahmad Jamal sample blends with the heavy boom bap, the way Nas gliiiides over the beat like water. Mannn it’s hard to describe the feeling of when I first heard it, of what I still feel today, but it was something like transcendence — for a moment elevating you closer to God. In one of my lowest seasons in life, this song made me feel like I could do anything in the world.

I imagine that’s what Nas felt while working on this track, and I get why he sometimes talks about being a “vessel” for higher power. With music like that you can feel it, like you’re borrowing the artist’s energy and inspiration for a moment. That feeling is what I chase every time I hear new music and when I feel it, it’s instant, it hits deep, and I “just know.”

And I think that’s the power any artist (music, food, art) has to contribute and why people are inspired by them. This ability to elevate you above life and feel their love, joy, passion — even for 4 minutes and 50 seconds, even for one dish.

ft. Lamb Pappardelle with Beans, Yogurt, Mint 🐑🌿

Why? Idk maybe from watching too many American mafia movies, but something about standing over a slowly simmering pasta sauce feels very New York to me. I always feel meat ragus in the fall, and for this one I did a lamb + mint + yogurt combo. Honestly I just had to know how yogurt on pasta would work out lol.
