A few weeks back we made it to Mtn Space Gallery for the closing reception of Caitlin Frown’s Frowntown exhibition. Having experienced Frown’s work at the 10X10 event last year, we were excited to see her latest showing. This installation began in July and continued evolving up until early September; where new elements were added to the work little by little. Her double stacked dioramas greet you through the gallery windows. The top half begins with the Frown Town sign, which is a sort of welcoming followed by a series of buildings. The bottom half, considered Frowntown Underground, appears to be the basements of some of the buildings and a sloth-like creature hangs from a ladder connecting the two worlds.

Inside the gallery were printed and framed screen grabs from stop motion films. These images depicted scenes from Frowntown and Frowntown Underground. A tooth visits the dentist, a creature gossips on the phone, a slice of cake at a picnic. Frown embellishes the frames with small details by attaching a row of teeth, cake sprinkles, or marching ants respectively. In addition to the framed pieces, hand crafted characters float on the wall near their associated photos. Frowntown and Frowntown Underground will be on view through the end of September, however the gallery window section is visible 24-7. Links to some stop-motion are in our bio.

This Saturday 6-8PM we celebrate Frowntown Underground by Caitlin Frown. Frowntown Underground unveils a new subterranean layer of Frown’s ever-evolving imagined world, FrownTown. Through mixed media sculpture, Frown invites viewers to find wonder in the smallest details of playful, immersive environments, spaces that exist in her words ‘somewhere between childhood memory and dreamscape’. The installation will be on view 24/7 through the end of September. Please DM or email Melissa at info@mtnspace.com to book an appointment to see all available works in person. 🪱 taken in mtn space by @c.frown
