The morning mists swallowed the hillfort of Tableberg as the Teutā fighting men forded the Ēa. That great ford, which the Teutā called the Stelford, was once a bridge ere the great flood laid waste to it. Nought is left but its posts, which line the ford like the ribs of a dead thing.

What you see here is what is left of an old sunglass beacon from before Mehter’s flood. It still stands, for it lies on the high ground of Orness’ hills. It was set at such a height to better send tidings afar, overcoming the hurdle of trees and other hills. For a long while after the flood, the beacon hall stood empty, but no longer. For many lifetimes now this old wreck has been settled anew by the same folk that raised it, the Talanos, that great and tale-rich thede¹ of Talanā who once held the world under their sway and who in the last Days of Tin, brought on the great flood for their unholy fighting with the Alves of Upergora.

A sunglass uses the shape of the world to send tidings afar. The land of Concavia bends up and bows overhead, like a hollow ball, a sunglass can glint Leuada’s light to any place, sending tidings much faster than those sent on wing or over sea.

Now this elder sunglass beacon bears a sunglass once more and is called Belnódomos, “the bright house”, by the Talanos which dwell there. Belnódomos is home to a witch-guild, who keep whatever findings they unearth from before the great flood sound and unweathered beneath its roofs.

1* Nation. by @c.s.diggle

Dwalves cannot fare by day unshielded, for Leuada’s light turns their kind to stone, but they can fare above-ground when wearing a day-shroud. Day-shrouds come in many shapes, but are most often black and white and bestrewn with cloth-strips which have spells sewn into them. This day-shroud has shadowed holes at the mouth and under the chin, through which the Dwalf within can see out. The helm is wicker, clad in clay to fill the holes in the woven hazel rods. The cloth-strips bear spiked rune rows, some hanging like fangs, some standing like stakes and some meeting to make shafts. These runes call the mind to the deep hollows where the Dwalves dwell. These spell-laden strips stave off rips and keep the shroud about the Dwalf in harsh weather.

The ghostly Dwalves do not eat worldly foods of flesh and wort. They feed on unworldly and shapeless things, such as souls and worship given to them. The Dwalf here is stealing the life from a hapless wanderer. The wanderer was helpless to ward off so mighty an elder being. When their eyes met, the Dwalf fed on his fear straight away. The man could barely lift his spear to cast it before he stumbled and fell on his back, too weak to bear his own weight.

This is a commission that I did for Ryan bowers ongoing science fiction world building project. If you have any questions, I’m sure that Ryan will be more than happy to answer them down in the comments, and I’ll answer them to the best of my ability too.

Here’s part one of the lore on the Veldrindians, the rest is in the comments:

An endeavour. An eternity. The emptiness between spirals.

Home had drifted her way across the intergalactic gap for untold millennia. Her onboard systems were corrupted by some unknown deep-space anomaly. Home’s purpose seemed to be to travel to a new galaxy and use the information stored in the gene-forge to recreate the ecosystem of her creators on a suitable candidate world. But why not just travel to another star? Why undergo the unfathomably long journey to another galaxy? Was Home running from something? Home didn’t remember. The anomaly had erased her memory and all she knew then was that she needed to fix the damage caused by it.

Home used the gene-forge to create a workforce from an amalgamation of different stored genetic sequences. The anomaly had corrupted even those, so she used the most complete genome in storage, that of a livestock animal, and uplifted it to serve her purposes. This species was named the Veldrinians. Home was their mother. by @c.s.diggle

A recent piece for my upcoming book, The Song of Sundering and Sithen Days, showing some Talanos sunmen operating what is called a sunglass. A sunglass is a mechanical mirror which redirects sunlight to anywhere in the world to send messages, it is the technology which allowed the Talanean empire to grow so large and maintain its territory. This scene shows their civilisation at its absolute height in an age called the Days of Tin. #concavia #TheSongofSunderingandSithenDays by @c.s.diggle

High up in the heavens, on the golden rings of Gelh that gird the sun, the Wyrms watch as wardens of the wilds below.

Here’s some art from my new illustrated epic poem called the Song of Sundering and Sithen Days, it serves as a creation myth for my next big project after Humanity Lost called Concavia, more news on that at a later date. #concavia #songofsunderingandsithendays by @c.s.diggle
