Late last night I was brought a young adult American Crow.

The crow was taken to 24 hour vet clinic since it had been seen sitting in the same location. Would not fly away when approached.

Crow was treated for minor injuries & placed on antibiotics in case it had been caught by a cat.

When the Crow arrived, first thing I noticed was it was covered in bird mites. Bird mites can cause serious damage to the feathers & skin. Not to mention causing the bird to become anemic.

I immediately treated the crow for mites & then let it rest for the night.

This morning, the Crow was standing but did not make any attempts to fly. The majority of the mites seemed to be gone thankfully.

Brought in some breakfast & it was gone almost immediately. #wildlifeofinstagram #crows #birdsofinstagram #animalsofinstagram #Americancrow by @c2nwrc

Must be clean!!!

Opossums are very clean animals & typically begin cleaning immediately after eating.

There's just something about watching them that just makes me smile. #wildlifeofinstagram #opossumsofinstagram #sofreshnsoclean #animalsofinstagram #wildlife by @c2nwrc

Late night intakes:
4 pinkie squirrels 3 male, 1 female
No visible injuries but bruising typically takes 12 hours to start showing up. These small pinkie squirrel will eat every 2 hours around the clock, day & night.

We have been having scattered thunderstorms & rain around here & the end results are a lot of misplaced wildlife.

So many rehabilitators in the area are exhausted, are already at their limits, & the calls keep coming.

To my fellow rehabilitators....THANK YOU for everything you all do!!! Rescue is not for the weak!! 💜 #babyanimalsofinstagram #wildlifeofinstagram #squirrelsofinstagram #babies #animalsofinstagram by @c2nwrc

This very scared little girl came in this afternoon after falling from the safety of the tree only to wind up with a curious dog picking her up.

Thankfully very minor injuries but she is absolutely terrified. She has had a full day already.

Squirrels are now like potatoe chips, you can't just have one 😆

I clean the enclosure, & all 8 Carolina Wren's wasted no time throwing stuff everywhere & then sunbathing in the mess 🤦🏼‍♀️

Being a wildlife rehabilitator is just us constantly cleaning. We are the best animal janitors EVER!!! 😆
These trouble makers will be released soon!

Juvenile Red Tail hawk that was brought in from Animal Control.

Nothing broken, no gunshot wounds (yes people unfortunately shoot them), legs are good, but we are very dehydrated & very thin. No signs of rodentcides so far.

This unfortunately is common for many young raptors when they begin their solo journey alone without their parents.

Finding food & hunting on your own can be very difficult, especially when its this hot outside.

Many young first year raptors struggle & wind up in rehab. Hopefully someone just needs some fluids & a few good meals. Will update with more later. Fluids have been given & exam done & letting our guest rest for now. #raptorsofinstagram #birdsofinstagram #wildlifeofinstagram #animalsofinstagram #rehab by @c2nwrc

Squirrel Talk: 🐿

Squirrels like other wildlife have their offspring during the spring but they have 2 separate breeding times.

Litters can have 2 to 4 kits (baby squirrels) & in some odd instances, up to 8.

The first litter is typically around March but if it's a warmer winter can start as early as February. (Thankfully this doesn't happen often 😬)

Second litters can start as early as July but typically in August.

Squirrel momma's make a nest, actually called a drey, & can have more than one of these dreys built. Dreys are made from leaves, pines straw, & sticks.

Dreys are their home & protect the squirrels from predators & provide a warm shelter in the winter.

When we recieve calls about baby squirrels that have been found on the ground, we will typically ask the finder to try & reunite with mom. This is done by leaving kit near the tree or where an adult squirrel has been seen.

The baby squirrel or squirrels can be placed in a small container with an old tshirt or paper towels as well. We also advice that the finder play "baby squirrel" sounds on their phone. (These baby squirrel sounds can be found on YouTube).

Reuniting squirrels should be done during good weather & during daylight hours. Never leave pinkie squirrels (pink colored skin, no fur, eyes & ears are closed, recently born) or juvenile squirrels outside over night.

If a juvenile squirrel (fully furred, eyes open, can climb & move on its own) follows you or jumps onto to you, this squirrel needs help & you need to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

As always, if you find wildlife & have questions or concerns, please contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or facility near you using your state's Department of Natural Resources (wildlife commission website) or the Animal Help Now app or website.

*please do not attempt to feed, give water, or medications. The most important thing you can do is keep them warm & secure. #squirrelsofinstagram #wildlifeofinstagram by @c2nwrc

This helps to put in perspective why so many individuals have to wait to hear back from licensed wildlife rehabilitators & facilities. Why we can not always come out to pick up every animal we are called about.

Please remember, rescues & rehabilitators are not paid & we are not funded at all. It could be 1 person taking in calls, medicating, cleaning, & feeding wildlife plus their regular paying job, their family, their pets...plus all the things in between like getting supplies, going to the vet, repairs on enclosures, & the list could go on.

From about March to September many rehabilitators may average 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night if lucky. We are yelled at by a handful of individuals that truly have no idea what we do. We see more death & suffering than any of us cares to share & more than many could deal with.

Yes there are some bad rehabilitators but most are truly wonderful & very caring individuals that put themselves dead last to care for wildlife & to help the people calling.

Please be kind & patient! 💜 #rehab #rescue #wildlife #animalsofinstagram #themoreyouknow🌈 by @c2nwrc

So many injured & orphaned babies coming in. Their tiny bodies covered with scratches & brusing. They are hungry, dehydrated, scared, & exhausted.

What a difficult way to start off life.

THANK YOU to all the finders that keep these babies warm & get them to us quickly.

THANK YOU to all the licensed wildlife rehabilitators that continue to care for wildlife even when you feel like you have so little left to give & yet you still find a way! 💜

The juvenile Black Rat came in after it got stuck to a glue trap inside someone's home.

The Rat Snake had a small area injury from the glue trap & was kept in rehab for the skin to heal.

Once the Black Rat snake has finished shedding its skin, it will be released. You can tell a snake is currently in shed by the milky white or blue eyes & the dull color or faded color of their skin. Depending on the species, snakes can shed about 4 to 12 times a year & more if they are babies ir juveniles.

Snakes shed their skin when they grow, to assist in removing external parasites like mites, & to replace damaged scales. My friend here has will be released shortly after this shed. 🐍💙
