Growing up, I was always told that I stand on the shoulders of giants. There were people who came before me, who walked, so that one day I could run. Dr. Alvin Blount Jr. is an example of a trailblazer who walked so that today, I can run. He was a brother of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, the 1st African American in North Carolina to be certified by the American College of Abdominal Surgeons, served as acting Chief of Surgery for the 8225th MASH Unit in Korea, and was appointed Chief of Surgery for the 47th U.S. Army Combat Surgical Hospital, and was an integral part of the integration of Cone Health.

Dr. Blount accomplished all of these things in spite of racism and bigotry. His success gives me confidence that I can Achieve all of the goals that I set for myself and more. While I never had the chance to meet Dr. Blount, his legacy and accomplishments still have impacted me. As I study to become a surgeon I understand, that I will become an example for those that come after me. I pray to be like a man who inspires those to accomplish their goals in spite of barriers like Dr. Blount did for me.
