There’s no better place to be during the holiday season than with family. In Gee’s Bend, the warmth of hugs, laughter, and connection is always present. As we close out the year, our team is reminded of how powerful it is to share memories and spend time with the ones we love.

Featured here are moments from X’s family gathering at his great grandmother Martha Jane Pettway’s home during the 2024 Airing Of The Quilts Festival (@visitgeesbend). Multiple generations came together to celebrate, reflect, and create something truly special. We’re grateful for the opportunity to document occasions like these. “Peace Peace, just checking in and Wishing everyone reading this a Happy and Safe Holiday Season! Me and my Brothers and Sisters at @geesbendwtth are having a sale on our images created during the production of our upcoming Documentary Gee’s Bend: Welcome to the hole. This process has been a labor of love filled with intention, growth, fellowship and one of most enriching projects I’ve ever been privileged enough to be a part of. Photo #1: X the artist prepping for production at the Home that’s the center of our documentary. This homestead was the first of many constructed on the vast Pettway Estate around 1940 and served as the center of community, commerce and fellowship as the Pettways established their societal footprint in Gee’s Bend (Boykin, Alabama)

Photo #2: The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama, located 40 miles from Gee’s Bend creating free passage over the Alabama River. This bridge was made famous from the non-violent protests spearheaded by Dr. Martin Luther King and countless volunteers pushing the effort to galvanize the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

14 prints are now available and consist of images made during production from October 2023 up until now from Director and Producer @studiophill_, Co-Director of Photography @C_Jefferson_, and Behind The Scenes photographers @julian_argo , @OmoPastorr and @Afro_Daakye. Film Score By: @thesinopsis 🫡

“After arriving back home in the Bronx for my yearly Christmas and New Years vacation, I had one mission: Meet Ransome (@ransomegart). While I’ve been privy to his work previously, it was an amazing experience to view his studio and workplace in person. Ransome’s art, and most of all his temperament with day to day work, art and family, is amazing. Me and my brother @___shaad__ left truly inspired after our photo session. Let’s all be more like Ransome, the world will be better off for it.”

Gee’s Bend has always held a strong influence over Ransome’s work and he has graciously allowed us to use his work in our film. You’ll see more developments on that use as production continues.

“Surrounded on three sides by the #AlabamaRiver, in Gee’s Bend there’s a peacefulness, a quiet almost overwhelming sense of respite provided that can be difficult to describe, replicate, or even take in all at once. Many times I found myself taken aback by the sense that not many people have been lucky enough to view this gem of a spot, even with a lifetime of exploration or travel. On this day, I was one of those lucky people privileged enough to partake in the majestic nature of this place and people.

“RoadDog aka Edwin Pettway greeted us as we arrived to the Pettway Homestead in October ‘23. The natural familial nature of Edwin and the rest of the Pettway family let us in the crew know that we were truly taken care of in Gee’s Bend. Shoutout to Uncle Edwin for all of his hospitality during our first trip to Boykin. Looking forward to returning for May Day in the spring, much respect to the Big Homie Uncle Edwin ✊🏿.”

“Generational Heritage is a profoundly strong concept… Being aware of your own personal heritage has the inate ability to both tell you where/who you came from as well as serving as a gentle reminder you of who you are in this world today. Heritage, Culture and Tradition combined properly can gift any of us the vision to see the most tenuous obstacles as mere opportunities to persevere despite the odds, both now and in the future.

“After arriving in Gee’s Bend, we were introduced to the first house built on the Pettway property. Built around 1940, this multiroom family homestead served as both shelter in the winter and a central gathering place for the first and future generations of Pettway family members to come.
So very privileged and thankful to the Pettway family for the opportunity to document such a sacred and culturally significant part of their history.”

The fellow Co-Director of Photography for the documentary film “Gee’s Bend: Welcome To The Hole” is Atlanta, Georgia-based photographer, by way of The Bronx, New York, Courtney Jefferson (@C_Jefferson_).

Throughout Courtney's experiences in the professional photography/creative direction fields he has been able to contribute to many notable projects. One of his most notable project contributions would come from his years of experience gained from creating customer facing digital media campaigns as well as physical installations for Reebok
North America, Europe and Asia (@Reebok).
