You've probably heard of the big names in barrels. But there’s a good chance you haven't heard of Shaw Barrels—yet.

Last year, I toured the nation's oldest privately owned barrel manufacturer, and I've been a believer ever since. Between the barrels I’ve already used and the ones lined up for future projects, I’ve been consistently impressed. Two of those builds—the 6mm CM with a titanium-sleeved barrel and the .22 ARC—were even featured in Guns & Ammo Special Interest magazines.

And now, Shaw Barrels is coming to a dealer near you.

The intersection of September 11, 2001, and firearms history encompasses artifact recoveries from Ground Zero, emergency response protocols, and sweeping changes to aviation security and tactical equipment policy.

Recovered First Responder Sidearms

During search-and-recovery operations in the wreckage of the World Trade Center, several sidearms belonging to fallen law enforcement officers were recovered:

Officer Walter Weaver (NYPD): A stainless steel Smith & Wesson Model 640 revolver. Officer Weaver was last seen on the 6th floor of the North Tower using an extraction tool to free people trapped in an elevator. His sidearm was later donated by his family to the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia, where it remains on display.

Officer John D’Allara (NYPD): An NYPD-issued Smith & Wesson Model 5946 9mm DAO pistol, recovered from Ground Zero alongside other equipment from emergency response units.

Federal & State Agency Firearms: Ground Zero recovery efforts also unearthed duty sidearms and long guns stored in armories within government offices in WTC Building 7, which housed field offices for agencies including the U.S. Secret Service, ATF, and Customs Service.

Policy & Aviation Security Shift: Federal Flight Deck Officers

Officers
Prior to September 11, commercial airline pilots were generally not permitted to carry firearms in the cockpit under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines.

Arming Pilots: In response to the highjackings, Congress passed the Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002.

FFDO Program: This created the Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) program managed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Voluntarily trained commercial pilots and flight crew members are sworn as federal law enforcement officers permitted to carry concealed firearms—specifically designated standard-issue sidearms—strictly inside the flight deck to prevent hijackings.

Browning Citori White Lightning 28” in 12 gauge.

There are fine shotguns coming from manufacturers whose names I can hardly pronounce. These arms are both works of art and a testament to self-achievement. Then, there are working guns. These ones wear the scars of hunts gone by. Of lost birds and good dogs. Of times spent afield with friends and family. Some working guns can be plain, while others are their own form of art. The Browning Citori White Lightning is the latter.

The Browning Citori is a working man’s shotgun. But it also represents something more. From the intricate, broad-coverage engraving on the silver nitride receiver to the oil-finished Grade III/IV walnut stocks, the White Lightning lives in both worlds. Yet it desires to be in the field, chasing birds with a dog at the point. Its destination is in the hands of a bestower, who will pass down the fine piece through generations. Only then will its story be understood. Chase dreams, yes, but better yet, chase good stories.

🇺🇸Happy 250 America 🇺🇸

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." -John F. Kennedy.

🚀 Book Review Launching 🚀

For 2026, I'm starting a run of short book reviews and I'm kicking things off with Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space by Adam Higginbotham.
•••
The book traces the rise of American spaceflight, the Challenger tragedy, and the investigations that followed, exposing hard truths behind one of the twentieth century's biggest institutional failures. Higginbotham perfectly sums up the tension of the space race with Alan Shepard's famous words: "When asked what he was thinking about when preparing for launch aboard his Mercury-Redstone rocket, Alan Shepard, the first American in space, had infamously replied, 'The fact that every part of this ship was built by the lowest bidder.'" Deeply researched, gripping, and unsettling, this is essential reading for anyone who loves real-life stories of exploration and consequence.
