Ambient Shepard arrives in the southern lands. Richard Hronský is a sound and visual artist, gatherer of souls, and wandering medieval troubadour. He miraculously escaped the plague by blowing all dark evils away with his fujara, pipes, flutes, and other traditional Eastern European instruments. Since then, everything he hears is sketched into his notebook, and everything he sees is hummed through his music—or at least captured on his recorder. Last year he released Pohreb (The Funeral) on mappa, following up his previous album CLOSURES on Warm Winters Ltd. We’re excited to welcome him back to the South after centuries, to the places where his journey may have begun (this part of history remains unmapped).

In the hands of Michaela Turcerová, the saxophone becomes a percussion instrument. Blowing into it sounds more like gargling saltwater after a long illness. What crawls out are glitchy spasms, hovering somewhere between generative electronic music (if the PA is good) and Nyege Nyege style drum distortions (if the PA isn’t so good). This is the sound of a saxophone that has broken free from its master—becoming something more alive than any human virtuoso. On alene et, Michaela Turcerová, a Copenhagen-based, Slovak-born musician, takes minutiae — the tiniest scrapes and breathiest hums — and distorts them into sprawling, collaged webs that barely resemble the instrument in its natural state.

Their monthly sessions at @cosmos.cac have become go-to nights for those seeking these kinds of sounds, as has their carefully curated bi-weekly mixtape series on soundcloud. Their objective is to connect the ambient and experimental music community in Portugal with their peers internationally. As such, next Friday they invite the conductress of chaos @kiernanlaveaux for a night of feverish sonic incantations on This Side.

hi 🤍 Im releasing this side project I’ve been working on for the past few months. This website is a personal archive for my field recordings, with sounds I’ve been collecting over the years. To make it a bit more fun and interactive, I’ve added some sound effects using @p5xjs 👩‍💻

The idea is to choose a sound and just play with it with the sound effects console, and if you like your creation you can record it and save it 🖇️

I would love to hear your experiences so feel free to send it to me via DM or email. Also, it would be amazing if you could submit a field recording so I can add it to the archive 🫶 my email is: webcarolf@gmail.com
