Aside from watches, I’m passionate about bags. If I come across a cool tote on my travels, it gets rolled up and added to the collection. The challenge I faced was that these accumulated bags did not serve all the things I wanted and a bulkier backpack while traveling becomes harder to blend in and screams tourist/visitor. I wanted a bag that can do double duty and carry my ipad, ricoh camera, and a compartment to safeguard watches. It’s been a pleasure working with @cabalcrafted to design and build from scratch something our friends and clients will use not just on their travels but in their daily life. Each bag is hand-cut and sewn in California with a water resistant duck canvas made in the US designed to weather and patina with time. These are not for sale. @commons.cafe is opening soon in Irvine and designing their aprons was slow and methodical. Opting out of automation, the Cabal team leaned into that slow spirit, and kept it 100% human with hand-painted renders + mini figurine samples of the original ideas.

(Swipe btwn before /after) Here’s a peek at the living space I designed in my recent move to OC. Each of my spaces are known by my friends as the Cabal Abode, it’s always a fun project.

Before deciding on anything, I intentionally spent a month sleeping w just a mattress to observe:

• Where the light hits at different times of day
• Personal needs and rhythms (daily use, work, lounge, sleep, aesthetics, meaning)
• The room’s design strengths, limitations, + what to highlight or change

This helped me design to my specific needs in this particular room.

I basically designed this as a micro apartment, intentionally breaking subconscious assumptions about design in a bedroom: that you "need" all the “normal” implements like a bed, a coffee table or bench at the end of that bed, a professional work from home set up, and a TV. We all know living needs aren’t one-size-fits-all. I’m not an NPC and neither are you.

I’m hesitant to post a more detailed image walk through these days, since my living space is special to me, and content feels increasingly more like surveillance—so instead, here are some deets for the geeks who want to slow down and play where’s waldo...

A few items teasing you in this reflection pic:
• The tatami platform is a triple function: lounge, work and sleep. Peep the foldable table—I store it under the platform. Also, I ritually set up and put away my Japanese shikibuton in the am and pm.

• The Tokonoma alcove (I’ll let you look that up) in the corner, includes a super philosophical piece of art featuring a kumon ryu bodysuit tattoo, and a purple perennial plant I picked in the neighborhood. I plan to rotate the plants seasonally.

• The pachira aquaticua tree (“Patch”) in the center is over 6ft, and w/ the massive bookshelf, draws the eye upward, contrasting the low-seating. This emphasizes the bigness of the room.

• When you fold those floor seats up, the back becomes rigid. They are hard to find, discontinued Muji pieces :)

• The ceramic wares on the bookshelf are custom-handmade by my talented friend @ofbluestskies

So many more details, but these days, I find beauty in hidden-ness and not knowing/sharing everything #withaslowspirit by @cabalcrafted

Long time collaborator and friend, @ofbluestskies sharing her industry expertise on standard pattern requirements with me.

Pattern Making is a structured thing, there are steps, an order, and pieces that go together (along with pieces that don’t).

Creatives can tend to think structure is limiting, but when used appropriately, it can be something that allows even more intuitive freedom for less effort. A mountain’s structured boundaries allow a wild river to flow as a focused stream downward. Without it—the flow could be so unfocused, it simply spills left and right to dry out.

Structure doesn’t have to be the enemy of creation. I’ve found it can be the shelter and edifice, allowing creation to play within its walls.

With out a solid pattern, the execution of my designs may lose a sense of consistency, and that’s something I value.

@commons.cafe cafe is finally open. The commitment to their craft for perfect cup of coffee is very inspiring and something very human. Give them a visit because you will not be disappointed by what @vincentngo_ has to offer.

Linked up and slowed down with @the_eyesee again recently to hand off his matching, entirely leather watch straps. Made manually from start to finish using my hands instead of automation.

I’m new to handcrafting watch straps, and they’re more difficult than they seem. Here’s Proto #3, and I think i got the hang of it. Most of you, including my client, were drawn to the classic handsew technique over the braid-y looking one.
