This work spans a challenging year and combines both some new and familiar approaches to painting for me. Most of the new paintings are on paper, which I chose to cultivate a low-stakes attitude and loosen up my process. This has enabled the compositions to emerge intuitively and confidently, embracing openness and change. Although it feels like I’m revisiting some earlier aspects of my work, I’m in a very different place than before. And yet despite my efforts towards growth, I have found many of the things I have aspired towards have been there all along. It’s a personal collection of paintings that have come out of leaning into intuition and being comfortable with more questions than answers.

Very happy to share these new photos of Cascadia at SeaTac Airport by the great Rafael Soldi. i’ve barely been able to see this much myself and it’s great to revisit it in this way. Hope you all might get a chance to see it in person in the coming months and years. If you are traveling through the airport you can see it at the transit station escalators in Concourse C.

Understory, 2026, fabric dye and acrylic on canvas, 46x82 inches.

This one holds layers of the past, present, and future. Best intentions and willful indulgences. Incompatible visions finding harmony and beauty and growth through and decay. Subversive gestures, latent desires, and digital residues. Promise, belief, and repair. Everything, all at once.

Inspired by his love of video games, artist Cable Griffith uses augmented reality to add surreal details to his paintings, creating vibrant works he hopes will evoke a sense of discovery.

I’m happy to have this painting, “Head (Map)” on display at @jrinehartgallery for the First Thursday art walk tomorrow evening, and through September 23. The painting is a part of the group show, “As Seen In…”, which features artwork by gallery artists that have been shown in recent museum exhibitions. I’d love to see you if you are able to swing by. The show includes work by @jaqchartier , @emily_gherard , @katystone.art , @priscilladoblerdzul_studio , @laurenboilini , and @janhoysculpture .

I’m sharing some process images of the development of my painting, which was improvised over a grid established by a combo of a fold dye technique and spray paint. I never really know where these are going until they arrive. Somewhat surprisingly, this one reminded me of a much earlier series of island paintings from 2011. Anyways, I hope you can come see it in person!

Just finished this one. It was a bit of a beast, but happy with how it turned out. Lots of tension and release. Friction and focus. Several contradictions are mingling together, without pronouncing themselves. Lots to dig into and hopefully fun, if not disorienting to look at.

I was shuffling around things in my art storage and came across these two oldies but goodies. They’ve been hibernating for far too long! Both paintings are now at @jrinehartgallery and on the gallery’s website.

The green/blue landscape was in a show at @soilart in 2009, but I don’t believe the orange one has ever been shown. These were important paintings to me at the time and represented a refinement of ideas I have been experimenting with for a few years after graduate school. Anyways, they’re big and juicy and I hope you can check them out! If interested, just ask Judith and Alexandra if you can take a peek.

Happy solstice!

Toot toot! Had a nice chat with Destiny Valencia for 425 Magazine about the woods, the PNW landscape, video games and other influences to my work. Images include a recent UFO painting from my Sightings series and a couple mosaics from my Redmond transit station project. And thanks to the great @ryanwarnerphotography for the headshot. Pick up a copy!

Hey everyone! My show ‘Uncanny Twilight’ at @tacomaartmuseum closes after June 7th. So that means this is the last weekend to see it and I hope that you can. I’m very grateful to the Museum and its staff for their generous support throughout. And especially to @ellen.ito and @wilksjj for the invitation and their belief in my work. It’s also an honor to be selected as the first artist in the Museum’s Project NW, featuring solo shows of regional artists. I’m excited to see that programming continue to unfold (@epiphany_couch_art is currently up!).

‘Uncanny Twilight’ features a collection of paintings from the last five years that hover between abstraction and representation, sharing a reverence for mystery, intuition, and place.

It’s been a privilege to share my work more widely and connect with folks about it who have visited the show and the artist talk. Thank you TAM and please visit this weekend if you can. There are many more reasons than my show to go!

From TAM’s website:

“As a kid growing up through the early 1980’s, my sensibility of landscape space was heavily influenced by early video games and cartoons, long before I became exposed to painting as a history and practice. Now, landscape space is as much a mental space, as it is an illusionistic one.” – Cable Griffith

Mythology, technology, and pop cultural representations of nature intermingle with real places and experiences to create the expansive and beguiling wilderness of Cable Griffith’s Uncanny Twilight. Steeped in the history and practice of painting, the artist’s paintings, works on paper, and paintings on hand-dyed canvas invite the viewer into a mysterious state and place between real/imagined, tangible/ethereal, interior/exterior, and digital/analog.

I’m continuing to post images of older work for a bit, leading up to my talk, “Cognitive Dissonance” at the @tacomaartmuseum on Saturday, March 28th at 10:30am.

I’ll be sharing a progression of influences, ideas, and methods, plotting a kind of path up to my current work in the show at TAM. I hope you can come!
