A good closeout package should let the next technician understand the installation without starting from zero.

Keep the cable records, rack ports, devices, CCTV, fiber, access control, testing, and punch-list information organized.

Profit on paper doesn’t always mean profit in the field.

If your estimate misses extra labor, supply runs, materials, overhead, or contingency, your margin can disappear before the project is finished.

Build estimates around the real job costs.

Your switch having enough ports doesn’t mean it has enough PoE power.

24 cameras × 12W = 288W.

With proper headroom, you need more than that before you choose the switch.

Enough ports doesn’t always mean enough power. ⚡

If cameras drop after dark, your PoE budget is worth checking.

✅ Use maximum rated camera power
✅ Check total switch PoE capacity
✅ Verify each port’s power limit
✅ Test with night mode enabled

Save this for your next camera install.

A successful unlock is not a complete access control commissioning test.

Before handoff, verify the entire door workflow — credential, lock, contact, REX, controller event, and final secure state.

That last round of testing can be the difference between a clean handoff and a callback tomorrow.

Document → Test → Verify → Hand off.

A clean rack is good.

A documented rack is better.

When ports, devices, locations, and IP addresses are tracked properly, troubleshooting becomes much faster.

No pulling random cables. No guessing which port goes where.

Document it once. Find it fast later.

Don’t wait until after the install to figure out CCTV storage.

Camera count, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and retention days all affect how much storage the system actually needs.

A system that looks fine on paper can fill the NVR much faster than the customer expects.

Plan the storage before the install.

A signed change order is not the finish line.

If you stop tracking after approval, you can lose visibility on what was invoiced, what was collected, and what is still outstanding.

Track the full workflow:

Approved → Invoiced → Collected

That is how you actually close the change financially.

Customer adds work after the quote?

Don’t just say yes and keep moving.

More cameras can mean more cable, labor hours, equipment, schedule impact, and cost — and if it isn’t documented, that extra scope can eat into your profit.

Document it → Price it → Get approval → Track payment.

That’s the workflow behind the CableMint Change Order Tracker + Cost Calculator.
