Popped into Sonder and honestly… what an absolute treat.
Perfect spot for any occasion. In this case a catch up with friends.

We started with a miso battered fish starter — light, crispy, and packed with that savoury umami hit that makes you slow down and actually enjoy the first bite. A proper mood-setter.

Then the main.
A fillet of sirloin beef tournedos, cooked beautifully, layered with pulled birria beef, a rich beef fat croute, and crispy tempura onions for texture. Finished with fresh chimichurri and a deep, glossy jus that brought everything together perfectly.
Big fan of @orieljonesltd meat and local produce being utilised.

Sonder is another reminder of how strong Cardiff’s food scene is right now. Sonder is definitely one to have on your list.
Looking forward to coming back to try their brunch and Sunday lunch offerings.

Took a trip to @mesencardiff in Rhiwbina.

Food cooked over charcoal is just always onto a winner.
Staff were very polite and informed us that the menu changes every week which is intriguing.

Food wise we went for:

- Riverside Sourdough with Herb Butter, ideal starter before the mains.

Main dishes:
- white asparagus , brown butter and Parmesan walnuts. Very moreish kind of surprisingly, not usually fussed on asparagus but the flavourings complimented each other very well.

- Chicken livers, bacon and sourdough. This was a personal highlight. The liver and bacon soaked into the sourdough 🤌

- Black seabass, rainbow chard and jerk spice. Another wonderful dish, cooked immaculately and the jerk give it a nice kick.

- Ox cheek tacos, pico de gallo. These seemed to be particularly popular, they came on a plate in 3’s.

Shared veg and potatoes. Very nice and palatable.

All together £104 bill, which for the quality of the food I think is justifiable.

Overall a great food experience, I would maybe recommend Mesen put if a dish is for one or two people as a small point.

Also, the palace like @mesencardiff tee goes hard. I want one 👀

I will definitely be back.

Hat tip to @rhiwbinatap over the road, great selection of beers and wine. Diolch @samuel_lewis96 for the suggestion. taken in Rhiwbina Village by @caerdyddeats

Couldn’t wait any-longa to try this 👀.
Early doors on Sunday we took a trip to @longacafe for the Turkish Brunch of dreams, we went for:
🍳Menemen with added sausage. £10.50
🥙Simit and egg £8.00

The dishes definitely lived up to the billing, ideal brunch and hella tasty. Smorgasbord of flavours, that definitely combine a treat.

No idea why we haven’t been here prior to this. Really feel like the Whitchurch Rd eateries and local businesses are on the up, it’s brilliant to see. taken in longa turkish café by @caerdyddeats

Latest month or so recap of my favourite places.

- Returned to @over_seas_apparel run club, finished off with a delightful pint in @barkerstavern Tavern. Honestly such a nice group at OSA run club highly recommend. Been a regular at @barkerstavern since it opened and always recommend it to pals/ anyone that will listen ✌️

- Been meaning to stop at @cletwr services near Machenllyth for a long time. Great array of Welsh produce. Strong flat white game too. Definitely stopping for food next time, full English breakfast and the Welsh rarebit looked delicious.

- @doastcafe
new opening in Bangor, really strong aesthetic, very clean and minimalistic. Great coffee and cakes looked top notch. They’ve utilised the space really well. Can see it being popular.

- @reubens.cafe.coffee coffee house, personal highlight of my trip to Bangor. Delightful cheese and ham croissant. Heard good things about the bagels here unfortunately they’d sold out.

- @cymru Wall Goch, special atmosphere. Been fortunate to be at the last few games against Norway and Denmark. Bring on the next few games.

Farmers Dog, Cotswolds.
@thefarmersdogpub

Let me tell you about The Farmers Dog.
Having opened its doors in August 2024, off the back of the very popular Clarkson’s Farm series. Most folks thought it was a crazy idea to open a pub/ restaurant in these unpredictable times.

Brilliant to finally visit and see what all the fuss is about.
Lovely to attend with my good friend Paul. Something to note you need to book well in advance we booked on 1st August.

Staff are approachable and love a chat. The commitment to using only British produce is admirable. For example, no coffee as none are grown in the UK.
The thing that struck me was the number of folks around and the great use of space with the Grand Tour tent next door. Within it a bar, shop and butcher’s.

There’s a real local community ethos with the meat coming from a farm less than a mile away

Food-wise I went for the Apple and Cider soup. This is the best soup I’ve had in a long while. Very fresh tasting and properly tasty.
Mains I went for the Sirloin steak, cooked medium rare. One small thing I would have liked was new potatoes instead of boiled. Admittedly it’s probably out of season for the new potatoes.
Paul opted for two starters the soup and carpaccio. He enjoyed the soup and remarked that the carpaccio could have done with some more meat on it. Paul also opted for the steak and was equally pleased by it.

If you haven’t got a booking at the pub, I recommend the farmers puppy the food container where you can get a selection of burgers and snacks, while enjoying the view of the Cotswolds. The pub garden is a great spot.

Also, spy a Hawkstone Stout that I need to try. Currently had a month and a half off drinking and the draught selection tested me.
We both agreed we would return.
P.s class how dogs can go in the restaurant, have never seen so many dogs as we did that day. taken in The Farmer's Dog Pub by @caerdyddeats

Cannot speak highly enough of @backyard_dough and Steve the owner.

Really kindly invited down to see his business and hear about his exciting plans moving forward including weddings and pop ups.

From talking to Steve it is evident he has a clear passion for Neapolitan pizza and has mastered the craft. I enjoyed picking his brains on all manner of subjects and life in general.

Genuinely inspired by the story of the business: cooking for friends to begin with, word of mouth spreading throughout Barry and further a field to the present day and people travelling from all over Wales to try his Pizza.

Pizza-wise I chose the Backyard Blaze. A pretty easy choice for me, the first appeal was the name. The flavour profiles and it being stacked with Hungarian smoked pepperoni, nduja, red chilli’s. The perfect balance of an amount of spice catered brilliantly to my spice-loving palate. Despite the name not needing me to search for the nearest bottle of milk.

You’ll be very hard pushed to find such tasty fresh pizza for such good value. As I said in my blog keep an eye out for Backyard Pizza it’s going places.

I’ve given a full review on my Substack which is CaerdyddEats.

You can also catch Steve at @wearecraftrepublic on Saturday 22nd August 2026.

My latest recap🚨

⚫️ Visited @newport.market with my good friend Paul. Checked out the new @lowandslowbarbecue

We both went for the barbecue banquet meal. We’re talking perfectly cooked ‘low and slow’ heaps of beef brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends & boneless chicken.

Low and Slow cook everything fresh that day, there’s none of that reheating.
Low and Slow aren’t newcomers to the bbq game, it’s great to see them expanding into Wales.
Only one minor point, would prefer proper plates and cutlery, when eating in.

⚪️ @thesultancardiff
The Sultan is one I’ve had one my list for such a long time, I’ve just never really got round to it for one reason or another.
That changed recently, I went along one evening with my good pal Jack.

I opted for two starters the grilled prawns and the stuffed chicken balls. The stuffed chicken balls in particular, I think about those regularly, so tasty.. Mains I went for the chicken shish. Absolute feast & make sure try the baklava for dessert👌. I will return I’ve heard equally good things about their brunch.

⚫️ I have spent sometime travelling through Cymru, I made my way to Machynlleth recently. Wednesday’s are market days in Mach, a lovely atmosphere and opportunity to see the market stalls in full flow. My dad always requests I call into @cigcynefinmeats & pick up some great quality Welsh produce. Producers and stalls travel from all over Wales and even into England to attend.

Every time I’m in Mach, I call into @hermitcrabcoffee they do a great flat white which is a ✅ from me, & it’s such a welcoming cafe, sort of place you could sit sipping coffee all day.

I also finally went to the Mach Loop. As a secret aviation geek it was quite the experience.

⚪️ Anyone who knows me well knows I’ve got a soft soft for West Wales, especially Aberaeron. With family links and many summers spent there as a kid. Aberaeron has developed & is thriving. The food scene in particular is going from strength to strength, @hmaberaeron never disappoints, big fan of @yseler_aberaeron & what they’ve brought to the table, @cegin_manuka @stubbornduckling @celticaberaeron (is iconic)

P.s Shoutout @welshbloodservice donate if you are able. by @caerdyddeats

Let me tell you about @banccoffee
Having opened around a month ago, what a great addition Banc coffee and records has been to Newport. Refreshing to see a coffee shop opening in an underutilised spot and thriving from the beginning. I’ve been 3 or 4 times since it opened and just can’t get enough. Staff are approachable and love a chat. I was in my element talking with the staff about their @carrottopbakery products , @cliftoncoffee and the suppliers they use.

One of the staff had an Oasis top on, so good old chat about that and the prospects of another tour.
Whoever is in charge of the social media and marketing for Banc needs a pay rise it’s phenomenal.

There’s a real community feel with it and a Newport connection, with it being owned by Wales Rugby player Aaron Wainwright and his co-owner Will Coghlan.
There’s something for everyone with food pop-ups such as the pizza nights; Dragons and Wales player @brodiecoghlan recently did a steak masterclass, which I’m gutted I couldn’t make, to vinyl-playing spaces and yoga.
The aesthetic and vinyl reminds me of a London-style hangout; Cafe 1001 comes to mind.
Sort of place that is adaptable as a space for in the day and night.
Also, spy Murphy’s Stout and Aperol Spritz on offer.

I cannot speak highly enough of Banc Coffee, intrigued to their plans moving forward. taken in Newport, Wales by @caerdyddeats

@gnhm_wales x @mattysbbqchopshop pop up.

Days like today show the strength and unity of the food and hospitality industry in Wales despite all the current challenges they face.
Unfortunately, @barryislandfoodfestival had to cancel today due to adverse weather.
But instead of dwelling on that, food vendors such as Grandad Needs His Medicine, Mattys BBQ Shop, and Carrot Top Bakery adapted and opened pop-ups so no food went to waste.

Food Guide & content creator @llioangharad who has had a key role in promoting Barry Food Festival and being a Barry resident, has more than proved her worth. At GNHM x Mattys BBQ event, she helped take orders and was going above and beyond to help. Big up Llio.

Having thought of attending the festival today anyway, I showed my support to GNHM x Mattys BBQ Chop Shop at his address in Penarth.
Brilliant to see queues and lots of likeminded folk talking and enjoy the glorious food on offer.

Mattys bbq is iconic, and has some reputation to boot.
With a waiting list for his bespoke bbq events, you know he’s doing something worthwhile and in demand.
Today was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.

The BBQ beef brisket bun (GNHM x Mattys) I’ve had before it’s elite. I still bought two. I tell everyone and their nan about it. I’ve also been known to drive to Swansea specifically for it 👀
I gave one BBQ beef brisket bun to my mam, she described it “as proper lush”. High praise indeed.

The other food option on offer none only than the Mattys BBQ pork rib. I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to try Mattys food, what the guy doesn’t know about BBQ meat isn’t worth knowing. Absolute connoisseur of his craft.
The Pork Rib proper big slab of meat, Korean rub/glaze Yes Please! juicy tender bit of kit like. Safe to say I’ll be signing up for a bbq event with Matty.

Finally, I know that day two of the festival (tomorrow) will be resounding success for all the traders on the Island, the festival is on 12-8 don’t miss out!

May/Mai recap of my favourite places I’ve been this month.
It’s been very wellbeing, day trip and coffee heavy this month.

- Took a day trip to Bristol, checked out @lowandslowbarbecue and I am eagerly anticipating their new restaurant upcoming this month in @newport.market . Such a welcome addition and judging by the brisket I had in Bristol it’ll be hard to rival.

- @nighthawkscardiff Always been a big fan of Nighthawks, sat in the arcade for the first time which was a cool experience and a wonderful back drop. Whirled a tiramisu there after having good things, hella tasty would eat it by the boat load if I could.

- Start of the food festival scene in South Wales and beyond, paid @bigfoodfestivaluk in Brecon Promenade. Great selection including @fireandflank @2ladskitchen @smokingriddle and many more. Perfect location for the bank holiday and the beautiful weather we’ve had lately.

- Looking forward to @barryislandfoodfestival this weekend 5th-7th June and all the upcoming food festivals this summer.

- @brodies_coffee big fan of Brodies and all their locations.
Used to frequent the cabin in Gorsedd Gardens near the museum in town. More recently, On the Wall is one of my favourite spots for a breakfast bap and a flat white. The underrated spot in my opinion is their Hut in Heath Park. Perfect spot for an iced latte pre or post walk.

- Another place I am extremely excited by is @draigoch_ . Felix started this off from scratch seven weeks ago. The most picturesque space and personifies therapeutic vibes. I honestly cannot get enough of the sauna, cold dips and the scenery with the Graig visible in the background.

- Also really grateful for @walkandtalk2024 . This is a brilliant community walking group hosted by @hinchcoaching2.0 & @ryanjohnnn . This is organised weekly every Sunday and is such a welcoming environment. More details are available on the @walkandtalk2024 page.

I couldn’t think of a better way to start a London trip a few weeks back. Visited the much anticipated @baracafelondon
Opened by Cissy Dalladay (who is from Aberdare) and her business partner Zoe Heimann. They both felt that Welsh Cuisine needed to be showcased.

We had two of the Welsh brunch menu options:

I went for the Ragu on toast. This consisted of Welsh slow cooked Welsh sausage and beef ragu on smoked beef dripping focaccia, finished with cream and Parmesan. This was to die for. Very strong option and great combination of flavours. A dish I would devour again and give Welsh Londoners a taste of home.

@danlparker93 went for the Crab Rarebit. This had Car-Y-Mor brown crab, Caerphilly cheese and Welsh beer rarebit on focaccia.
I also tried a slither of this, hella tasty. Who’d have thought you could have Caerphilly cheese in London.

Add this to your lists you won’t be disappointed. taken in London, United Kingdom by @caerdyddeats
