HATS

As many of you know, we are a serious coffee company, and as such, we keep on retainer a team of highly qualified, respected and imaginary coffee scientists. This fictional crack squad of coffee sciencers has led us to breakthroughs such as the pioneering of a system for ordering and receiving coffee beans on your personal computer or portable telephoning device, and the development of branded cotton coverings to get around those pesky nudity laws.

Recently I tasked the nerds with *ahem* a personal request to see if they could use their powers of science and wisdom to reverse the course of baldness. After testing countless potions and serums, they hit upon their most ingenious solution yet; if baldness can't be reversed, perhaps it can be hidden! Thus we present to you, the Moly baseball cap!

Its uses are not just limited to my personal vanity, however. It can shield you from the sun's rays, disguise the fact that you didn't wash your hair, help raise your spy game, all while making you look absolutely fabulous! And here's the kicker: you don't even have to play baseball to wear one!

Feel free to pop into the shop to try one on or order from the e-shop in four fabulous colours: pink, blue, green and brown. by @cafemoly_roastery

Now this is very cool! This bag o' coffee was grown and harvested on the farm pictured above in Jaén, Peru. It was then processed and shipped all around the world where it reached us in Cork through the trusty hands of @coffeychatscoffee at @caravelacoffee , where we had the pleasure and honour to roast it. James then took it with him on his current trip to Peru where it completed its full circle journey back to the very farm it came from.

Thanks for the photos James and Tony @westcorkcoffee ! by @cafemoly_roastery

The most magical and wonderful day of the year is upon us once again! To paraphrase @theokatzman , I'm not talking about Hallowe'en in Skibbereen. I'm not talking about Christmas Day in the Bantry Bay. I'm not talking about New Year's Eve in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. I'm talking about Autumnfest on the street that's best, Douglas St baby!

On the 1st Sunday in September every year, for one magical afternoon Douglas St is transformed. Every car is moved off the street, and the road becomes a showcase for all things delightful and delicious. Some of the best food trucks in the city, circus performers, musicians, games and artists make Douglas St their home, and small children and big children alike run amok without fear of cars or trucks. It's a truly fabulous day out, and the highlight of our year.

As is tradition, we'll have the candy floss machine spinning full tilt out the front, @blooming_flour will be in attendance with her ridiculously tasty treats and there'll be a chance to try on hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) for free and grab a few photos of yourselves in your royal Korean era.

The Children of Prague are in all the gardens, prayers have been offered to all the sun gods and I've personally performed 17 different sun dances. Bring on Sunday! by @cafemoly_roastery

Super proud of our filter line-up these days. We've got six different coffees on pourover, spanning the three major coffee producing continents of Asia, America and Africa.

Kirunga is a sweet and funky little Rwandan Bourbon, an anaerobic natural that's not too ferment-y, with nice wine and cherry notes and round body.

El Conjuro is a community lot from Jaén, Peru, super clean and fragrant but with a rich body that belies its washed process origins. Super sweet and juicy on the cool.

Luciano Pimenta has produced an amazing canephora, one of three non-arabica single origins you can pick up at Moly. This coffee is wild, with meaty notes of jackfruit that almost border on savoury, but balanced with intense lavender perfume, with a nice sweet rum undertone throughout. Possibly the best canephora we've ever tried. We are still, unfortunately, the only cafe in Ireland where you can come and taste a canephora on the brew bar, which is wild given how good it tastes, but with coffees like this out there, it won't be long before other cafes catch up!

The washed Chiroso from Los Alpes is delicate, soft and floral, with a lot of juicy acidity as it cools, balanced nicely with sweet apricot and green apple notes.

96B have produced an absolute stunner of a coffee, minty and herbal with notes of star anise and the unmistakable taste of whiskey and cola. The first liberica we've ever offered and, as far as we can tell, we are the only place in the country roasting and offering this species of coffee. Like Luciano Pimenta's canephora, we find it absolutely crazy that other cafes have not tried to add non-arabica coffees to their offering yet, but we're positive we'll see others start to take them on soon!

Finally, Felix Torres has brought us an intensely floral gesha cofermented with the yeast strain T-50. Lavender, violets, jasmine and rose are all hanging out in this cup, with a juicy body reminscent of nectarine syrup.

If any of this diverse list of coffees sounds like it might be your jam, pop on in and try a pour over, but be warned, it might be the start of a very long rabbit hole... by @cafemoly_roastery

What a first day back! Thanks so much to everyone who called in to welcome us back after waiting so patiently while we were doing the architectural equivalent of going to Turkey to get our teeth done! It was a long 5 weeks, but all the smiling and friendly faces today made the wait all the more worth it. We hope you like the small changes we've made to the place, but we're confident the soul of Moly has been retained and that you'll feel as welcome, safe and happy as always in our wee space here! And if you haven't been in yet, be sure to pop by, see what's changed and tell us how good we look; we're fierce vain and can't get enough of hearing it! by @cafemoly_roastery

A little bit of bad news, a little bit of good news...

The bad news is, as evidenced by the above picture, the builders aren't quite finished yet. To be honest, I was a little sceptical when the builders said it would only take 4 weeks! Old buildings like ours are like woolly jumpers; once you start picking at a thread, you can end up unravelling a lot more than you intended! And, to be sure, they've found a few surprises here snd there that have delayed our reopening. No shade on the builders, they've been absolutely fantastic, in early every morning and working until late to get the job done. These things just happen. They say they just need one more week, so provisionally we'll say we'll be open Monday week (the 20th), with room for a couple more surprises too!

The good news is our fantastic friends and neighbours at @coughlansbarcork are willing to put up with us for another week! So you'll find us where you left us, Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm at Coughlan's, for one more week! Thanks for your continued patience and see you in Coughlan's! by @cafemoly_roastery

Cafe tour in Paris!

After the madness and cheesiness of Sunmi's big day out at Disneyland yesterday, today was my day to pick what to do! The first cafe we visited was a super famous multi-roaster cafe with multiple competition award winning baristas, known and celebrated all over the world for their delicious coffees. I couldn't have been more excited heading there, and couldn't have been more disappointed with the service once we got there. The coffee was indeed delicious, but at €25 a cup, that should be a given. The customer service was absolute CAT. We went at a relatively quiet part of the day, and none of the four baristas could give an donkey's arse about how anyone was doing. Our coffee was plonked down on the table with a "Janson", no explanation of the coffee, what to expect or even a perfunctory "enjoy". These were not some uni students working part-time; these are serious and skilled coffee professionals who know their craft and are very good at it. They just decided to neglect the customer service part of the job, which is a wild business plan, but good luck to them. We won't be back.

A little disheartened, we headed for the next spot on my list, @hanoicornerparis, a tiny wee cafe that only serves Vietnamese coffees. Feeling pretty miserable after our last experience, we couldn't have made a better choice. Nam and Linh were so welcoming, taking the time to explain their amazing and diverse range of coffees, and walk us through their roasting and brewing choices. Nam made us ridiculously tasty robusta and liberica pour overs on their phin dripper, showing us how he has adapted the traditional dripper with slight changes, like using a second dripper base as a dispersion screen. The coffees were complex and exciting, and really showcased the best of Vietnam's coffee. Linh kindly gave some banana bread made in house to soak up all the caffeine; it was rich, tasty and well needed! A perfect lesson in hospitality, we left with full hearts and some tasty beans.

The next stop was a no-brainer. You don't go to Paris and not make a reservation at @substancecafe . I've run out of space, so I'll continue in the comments (teaser; it was amazing!) by @cafemoly_roastery

Brussels was fierce craic altogether.

What a whirlwind! We had an absolute blast. We kicked off World of Coffee by brewing delicious non-arabica coffees for sceptics and believers alike on the @stronghold_roasters brew bar. Thank you so much to Sara and Dani @thegodshot.be for trusting us and allowing us to ambush the unsuspecting with tasty canephora and liberica coffees! It was indeed a trap, and we caught a few rabbits. Success!

We were blown away this year by the level of competitors at the @worldcoffeechampionships Brewer's Cup. We got the chance to support our friends @yellow_coat_boi and @sierrasriracha , who both hit the stratosphere during their routines and left everyone with smiles on their faces and fires in their bellies. Despite always having a hundred things on the go at once, Sierra and Mik have both always been incredibly generous with their time and knowledge, and have helped and inspired us more than they probably know themselves. It was a joy and a privilege to see them on stage, and an experience we'll keep with us for a long time!

We ran into so many friends and met so many more new ones over World of Coffee! Special highlights included a cupping with @sunghee.t from @beanvoyagecoffee, an absolute hero of ours that we first met in Busan a few years ago. Sunghee and her team at Bean Voyage help connect women farmers with markets in consuming countries, and the work they do in leveling the very-skewed playing field for women producers is so important. We also got to hang out with @barista_moon from @month.coffee. We were cheering in the audience when Heon Gwan won the Cup Tasters Championship in 2022 in Milan and since then, we've been motivated to take part in Cup Tasters every year ourselves. Getting to reconnect with such inspiring figures is what makes World of Coffee such a joy every year.

We drank a RIDICULOUS amount of delicious coffee. Some highlights were @rogerg_zapata brewing some unbelievable @wilderlazocoffee geshas, and the absolute dudes at @7g.roaster roaster being both great craic and having banging coffees.

Despite it being stupid hot, we had stupid fun. Can't wait for WoC27 already. Lisbon can't be any hotter, by @cafemoly_roastery

We had an amazing couple of days in Meise, catching up with old friends and making new ones at the 4th version of @canephorum in the most magical setting one could of asked for, Brussel's beautiful botanic gardens. Surrounded by hundreds of years of collected seeds and plants, and sharing space with thousands of unique trees and flowers, we caught up on the latest canephora research, cupped some delicious coffees and hashed out our ideas together for the path ahead for canephora. Always a pleasure, friends, can't wait to see you all again! by @cafemoly_roastery

We've been truly touched by everyone who's called in to say hi and give us a little support and kind word in our wee temporary digs here in @coughlansbarcork this week! It's been an absolute dream serving our favourite people in our favourite pub, and although we can't wait to be back home once the renovation is done, we couldn't have found a nicer place to welcome you all while we're waiting for that to happen! Edel and Lee have been so welcoming and helpful while we've been here, and we are incredibly grateful that they've taken us in and given us a home for the next couple of weeks 😍

Next week we're going to finish a little earlier as it seems most people are hitting the beach in the afternoon (and too right as well, we've waited long enough for our summer!), so you'll catch us from 8am to 12pm Monday to Friday. Looking forward to another fun week with you all. See you In Coughlan's! by @cafemoly_roastery
