Just visited @hannyacafe, one of the newer coffee spots in Mandaluyong.

At first glance, I thought it was a cat café—but it’s actually a Japanese-inspired café with a story behind its name. In Japanese culture, Hannya is a mask often regarded as a protective talisman, believed to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. You’ll find several Hannya masks displayed throughout the café, adding character to the space. Beyond the Japanese vibe, the owners are also cat lovers, giving the café its own unique personality.

One thing I truly appreciate is when cafés share the origin and tasting profile of the beans they use for their espresso on their hopper. It already gives customers a better understanding of what to expect in the cup.

For their espresso, Hannya uses Mt. Apo coffee from Sitio Balutakay, processed through anaerobic natural fermentation and roasted by @berncoffeeroastery. I ordered an Indonesia Karo Strawberry as a pour-over and a cortado.

Enjoyed the Karo Strawberry due to the balanced of acidity and sweetness and still being able to taste the strawberry profile in the cup. The cortado was equally satisfying. Even with the milk, the espresso’s character still shone through, bringing forward notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits that has a smooth, creamy finish.

What to expect:
▪️espresso and non espresso based drinks
▪️hand brew coffee
▪️matcha
▪️pastries, cheesecake and sandwiches
▪️power outlet
▪️accepts cash/ E-wallet
▪️parking space

Caveat: I’m not in Australia at the moment. 😂

M is the one in Australia —not for coffee, unfortunately—but I made sure there was at least one café on the itinerary: @diggydooscoffee.

Tucked in the basement at 3/2 Bridge Street, @diggydooscoffee is one of those places you could easily miss, but it’s well worth seeking out. The café may be small, but it has a welcoming warmth that instantly makes you feel at ease. Rather than following the usual minimalist café trend, the space has a cozy, laid-back character that’s perfect for slowing down over a good cup of coffee. As you enter, you’ll be greeted with their espresso bar. Their slow bar is located inside the shop. While we normally framed our cherished coffee bags, i noticed that they placed theirs at the bottom of the cupboard.

On Paul’s recommendation, they tried the Kenya Nyeri AA, an AFCA Taste of Harvest winner. It brewed into a clean, balanced cup with approachable flavors, making it a good choice for those who don’t usually drink black coffee.

For espresso, M tried the Ratnagiri from India—a coffee that showcased yet another exciting origin.

Even if I couldn’t make the trip myself, it’s nice knowing a good coffee stop was part of the journey.

What to expect:
▪️espresso based drinks
▪️hand brew coffee
▪️sandwiches, pastries

From Pasay to a bigger home in Ongpin—@septcoffee.mnl has officially entered a new chapter.

I finally had the chance to visit their new space yesterday after missing the grand opening, and it was well worth the visit.

The new café is more spacious while still carrying the warm, welcoming atmosphere that Sept Coffee is known for. But what truly stood out was their impressive coffee lineup.

I had the opportunity to taste 8,different coffees, and every single one was exceptional. I

Among the pour-overs, my standout was the Peru Cusco Llaqta Pata SL9, an elegant, expressive cup that immediately caught my attention. I also thoroughly enjoyed their Ongpin Set, a great way to experience a curated selection of coffees.

Another highlight was getting to taste Panama Boquete Lerida #5 Gesha Honey.

Congratulations to Anna and the entire Sept Coffee team on your beautiful new space. Wishing you continued success and many more memorable cups to share with the coffee community.

What to expect:
▪️espresso and non espresso based drinks
▪️hand brew coffee
▪️cold brew and matcha

Today turned into an overly caffeinated day.

Dropped by @systemcoffeeco, one of QC’s newest specialty coffee spots.

The space embraces a clean, minimalist look, combining shades of grey, black, stainless steel, and subtle touches of greenery. It’s the kind of cafe that feels simple yet intentional—where every design choice has a purpose without trying too hard.

One detail I particularly appreciated was the layout. Their slow bar is separated from the espresso bar, creating a more systematic workflow that allows each station to focus on its craft while keeping the space organized and efficient.

The menu follows the same philosophy: straightforward and thoughtfully curated. You’ll find Black, White, and Anti-Coffee—the latter perfect for those who don’t drink coffee or simply need a break after one too many cups.

I also had the opportunity to chat with the owner and learn the story behind System Coffee Co., which made the visit even more meaningful. Of course, no visit would be complete without coffee. I enjoyed a few pour-overs personally brewed by the owner, making for a relaxed afternoon filled with good conversation and even better coffee.

It’s always refreshing to visit a cafe where the concept extends beyond the interiors and into the workflow, menu, and overall experience. Sometimes, simplicity is the strongest statement.

What to expect:
▪️espresso and non espresso based drinks
▪️hand brew coffee
▪️pastries

Have you spotted the iconic orange Kombi van today?

Well, get used to seeing it because @kombibrew’s Hideout V3 has officially found its new home in Makati—and this time, it’s here to stay. (right Budz! 😃)

Kombi Brew is now tucked inside @polilya.mnl, giving coffee lovers yet another reason to visit this beautifully designed space. It was my first time stepping into Polilya, and seeing it in the quiet of the morning made me appreciate it even more. The interiors are filled with character—warm, thoughtfully curated, and full of personality. Adding a specialty coffee bar to the space feels like a natural fit.

The menu still features Kombi Brew’s traditional espresso-based drinks, but still carry the two all-time favorites: Kahel Brew and Seascape. But Hideout V3 also introduces two new signature coffee creations:

Poblano – Coffee with yuzu and kosho, delivering a unique balance of bright acidity, subtle saltiness, and a gentle kick of spice.

BB Latte – A blueberry latte that adds a fruity twist to your usual coffee routine.

If you’re in the mood for something without coffee, Polilya also serves refreshing mocktails like Guava Good Day and Apple Cloud. Pair them with one of their silog meals, and you’ve got yourself an amazing breakfast.

I ordered the Poblano, which I thoroughly enjoyed for its well-balanced flavors. The yuzu brought brightness, while the kosho added depth and just the right amount of savory spice. Of course, I couldn’t leave without ordering my all-time favorite, the Kahel Brew, and I also tried the Apple Cloud, which was light, crisp, and refreshing.

Whether you’re dropping by for your morning coffee, breakfast, or simply to enjoy the space, Kombi Brew Hideout V3 is a welcome addition to Makati’s growing coffee scene.

What to expect.
▪️espresso based drinks
▪️mocktails
▪️silog, sliders, fries and chips

Visited @millibeancafe last month and found it to be a nice spot for those looking to work, study, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.

The cafe is named after the owner’s daughter, giving the space a more personal story.

Millibean also operates as a micro-roastery, roasting the beans they serve in-house. They are using a Vietnamese arabica coffee beans, roasted to a medium-dark profile.

I ordered an Americano and their lasagna—a simple pairing before heading to my next destination that day.

What stood out to me most during my visit wasn’t the coffee. It was the hospitality of the barista (i forgot to ask the name). He genuinely took the time to engage in conversation, ask about the coffee that was served, something that has become surprisingly rare in cafes nowadays. Those small interactions made the experience feel more personal and welcoming.

Sometimes, it’s not just the coffee that makes you want to come back—it’s the people behind the bar and the stories behind the cafe itself.

What to expect:
▪️espresso and non espresso based drinks
▪️pastries and lasagna

Finally had the chance to visit @yardstickcoffee’s branch at The Block.

The space immediately gives off a sense of warmth and comfort. With its rich wood finishes, earthy brown tones, and clean minimalist design, it feels both modern and inviting—a place where you can easily spend a few quiet hours over good coffee.
One thing that makes this branch unique is its in-house bakery, where doughnuts are baked fresh daily. They offer a variety of flavors, but we decided to keep it simple and ordered their Feel-Good Glazed, soft and sweet, which works well with the Los Guaduales as a pour-over.

What to expect:
▪️espresso and non espresso based drinks
▪️hand brew coffee
▪️freshly baked doughnuts
▪️accepts cash and credit card

Exactly two months since my Bangkok trip, and I still find myself reminiscing about the days we spent there—the incredible food, the amazing coffee, and the wonderful people we met along the way.

Bangkok truly is a paradise for cafe hopping. It feels like a new coffee shop opens every week, yet what impressed me most wasn’t the number of cafes—it was how each one had its own distinct identity and character. Every space tells a different story, from the architecture and interior design to the drinks they serve and the experience they create.

One thing I really appreciate is that cafes in Bangkok don’t simply replicate a successful concept. Even when a brand has multiple branches, each location feels thoughtfully designed with its own personality rather than being just another extension of the original.

It’s this creativity that keeps Bangkok’s specialty coffee scene so exciting and makes every cafe visit feel like a new discovery.

If you’re planning a coffee and food adventure in Bangkok, here are some of the food and cafes that you can include in your itinerary.

Food:
▪️Polo fried chicken in Sanam Khili Alley
▪️Wattana Pannich in Ekkamai
▪️Wan Jai Cafe House for their mango sticky rice
▪️Som Tum Kai Black 777 (Song Wat branch)
▪️Duck noodle (alley where Pobnar is located)
▪️Do Nua, Sukhumvit

Coffee Shops i visited (May 6 to 11)

This is Candid’s interpretation of the modern Philippine specialty coffee experience. Rather than following the typical cafe aesthetic, the space embraces familiar local elements—raw cement walls, warm earthy tones, and clean, understated finishes. The result is a minimalist yet inviting environment that feels contemporary.

Candid introduces stardust a blend of Philippine coffee including Finca de Garces. Stardust has notes of strawberry, yogurt, lemonade and candy.

This branch also offers gelato, so of course I had to try it.

We went for the Earl Grey Crumble and Mango Jasmine—both beautifully balanced with fruity and floral notes.

The standout for me was the Earl Grey Crumble. It has a rich tea aroma, subtle sweetness, and a creamy texture that makes every spoonful satisfying. Suggest to pair it with their plain croissant, it became a simple yet perfect combination. The buttery, flaky pastry complemented the floral notes of the gelato beautifully.

Highlights of this branch are their signature drinks. This is the Pineapple Dole Whip (129kcal) . Was surprised that all their drinks have calorie content.

Pineapple Dole Whip
This refreshing drink combines pineapple, coconut milk, espresso, and a Dirty Horchata foam. It instantly reminded me of a piña colada—but with coffee, making it even more enjoyable. Creamy, tropical, and incredibly refreshing, it’s the kind of drink you’d happily sip on a warm afternoon.

Flat White
Made with their Stardust Espresso and Meiji Milk (blue tetra pack) the cup beautifully showcased the coffee’s tropical fruit character. The milk complemented the espresso without overpowering it, resulting in a smooth, balanced, and naturally sweet cup. If you want a change to the usual chocolatey notes of coffee, you should try this.

Pour Over
Their filter coffee lineup featured Finca de Garces and Mt. Apo. I chose the Finca de Garces, which brewed into a clean and sweet cit taken in SM City North EDSA by @coffeecupseries

The only cafe in Baler that serves filter coffee is @kyu_cafe, making it a must-visit stop for coffee enthusiasts exploring the area.

One thing I noticed about the cafes in Baler is their simplicity. They don’t follow the usual highly curated, aesthetic cafe style—most spaces feel more relaxed, authentic, and connected to the laid-back island atmosphere.

I tried their Lantapan Bukidnon Sweet Coffee, roasted by @innovativecuppacoffeeroaster. The coffee greeted me with an aroma reminiscent of jackfruit (langka), and after brewing, those flavors became more expressive. I got notes of langka, a sweetness reminiscent of turon, and brown sugar—a comforting and distinctly familiar profile.

Highly recommend enjoying your coffee outside, where you can slow down, listen to the sound of the waves, and pair your cup with the relaxing beach atmosphere.

What to expect:

▪️hand brew coffee
