Noah Davis was scrolling through YouTube shorts late one night when one video caught his attention. The short featured scientists discussing a variety of research developments in plant science. Davis had cared for houseplants for years and remains passionate about all things plants.

“I was just thinking about how cool it was that researchers were doing this high-level work, and I was interested in what would eventually happen,” Davis said. “I then realized that I could be part of that type of work; I could help find answers to challenging questions.”

Davis was in high school when he came across the YouTube short. He just completed his first year at Mizzou but actually began his research journey last summer before his first semester on campus. He reached out to Jaime Barros-Rios, an assistant professor in plant molecular biology in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, to see what opportunities were available.

Davis, a sophomore plant sciences major, is building on his research this summer tied to the dry-grind bioethanol process through the Cherng Summer Scholars program. He’s specifically focused on lignin, a complex polymer that serves as a binder in the cell walls of most terrestrial plants.

Congrats to our talented Mizzou floral design students on their recent success in Orlando! 🎉

The Mizzou Student American Institute of Floral Designers (@mizzou_saifd) chapter traveled to the AIFD Elevate National Symposium, where they learned from world-renowned designers, volunteered alongside industry professionals and built connections for future careers.

The national design competition offered only a prompt the night before, a surprise box of materials the morning of and just ONE hour to create per category. Our students transformed flowers, foliage and imagination into award-winning designs inspired by Wicked and the Wizard of Oz.

Highlights include:
🏆 Emma Baepler — 1st Runner Up
🥈 Mizzou SAIFD — 2nd Place Team Overall
🌟 Gavin Bennett — People's Choice

Across the competition, our Tigers earned multiple top-10 finishes in arrangement, fashion flower, flowers to carry and interpretive design categories.

The team included FOUR first-time competitors to the national symposium this year. Congratulations to Emma, Gavin, Grace, Sadie, Sky, Riley, Lesleighan and everyone else involved in supporting the team. We are #CAFNRproud of the way you represented CAFNR and Mizzou! 🐯🌼 by @cafnr

Meet PRST’s Summer Welcome Leader!

Ezra Quick is a rising sophomore studying parks, recreation, sport and tourism with an emphasis in sport management. 🏞⚽

He was drawn to CAFNR and the program because he wants to pursue a career path combining sports and working with people.

Quick is from North Carolina and decided to become a Summer Welcome Leader to help fellow out-of-state students make Mizzou their new home. 🐯

"Easing their nerves but also getting them excited and showing them what Mizzou has to offer is my favorite part," he said. "I wanted to be that fun face on campus that people know they can come to with questions or just to have a good time."

SNR thanks Ezra for stepping into this leadership role and being a source of help for new students looking to pursue careers in Parks, Recreation, Sport and Tourism and other CAFNR departments.

Being in nature comes naturally to CAFNR senior Reid Monsees, a natural resource science and management major with an emphasis in fisheries and wildlife sciences.

"Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to be outdoors for the rest of my life," Reid said.

Reid is spending the summer as a creel survey technician for Mizzou’s Johnny Morris Institute of Fisheries, Wetlands and Aquatic Systems, working in tandem with @moconservation in the Kansas City area.

“Throughout the day, I’m responsible for conducting an accurate count of anglers fishing on a body of water,” Reid said. “Once they finish their trip, I introduce myself and complete a survey with their participation.”

Although Reid has always wanted to pursue a career related to the outdoors, he said this opportunity has helped him find his niche.

“This internship has solidified my love of being in nature and wanting to work in conservation,” Reid said. “It’s also helped me narrow down what I want to do more specifically, which is to work in fisheries.”

After he graduates, Reid hopes to work for MDC, with a goal of one day owning and operating his own fishery. Some of the most important lessons he’s learned throughout the summer so far have kept him grounded in his passion for nature.

“People repeatedly remind me that fishing is more about enjoying the outdoors and what nature provides, rather than being greedy and trying to catch a limit,” he said. “The experience means more than anything else.”

Throughout his experiences in CAFNR and the career opportunities the College has provided him, Reid believes every student has the potential to find their purpose, be successful and truly enjoy each day to its fullest.

“If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life,” he said. “I’ve found what I believe to be my calling in conserving the environment and resources that come with it for future generations to enjoy what I have.”

Meet CAFNR student Asher Skelton!

Asher is a sophomore majoring in Parks, Recreation, Sport and Tourism (PRST) @mizzouprst who is spending his summer as an intern in CAFNR’s Office of Academic Programs.

Although he has plans to work in athletics in the future, his goal this summer is to focus on communicating his CAFNR pride.

“I really like working on my communication skills, whether it’s over the phone, through email or just verbally,” Asher said.

Asher helps schedule advising appointments for current and incoming students and is also part of divisional visits when students attend Summer Welcome.

“I’m helping share my experiences as a Mizzou student and what residential life looks like, what being involved on campus looks like,” he said.

Asher believes CAFNR is the perfect fit for him because it combines his career path with his agricultural roots.

“I really liked that PRST was in CAFNR because I was involved in FFA a lot through high school,” he said. “It’s nice to be able to still be in touch with my agriculture side.”

But one of Asher’s biggest goals during his time at Mizzou is to help spread awareness of how varied CAFNR’s programs and opportunities are.

“I think a lot of people believe in this stigma around CAFNR that it’s all agriculture, and I really want to try to break that,” he said.

After summer is over, Asher aims to become more involved in the sport management program while continuing to show the Mizzou community everything CAFNR has to offer.

“I just really want to make an impact,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be huge, but I’d like people to remember me at Mizzou.” by @cafnr

We were #CAFNRproud to host the Missouri Agribusiness Academy (MAbA) on campus last week, where high school students learned about The Michael L. Parson Meat Science Education and Training Laboratory (MSL). They also heard from CAFNR faculty and staff members and state leaders.

Bryon Wiegand, director of the Division of Animal Sciences, gave MAbA members a presentation on the new meat laboratory, which is projected to open later this year. Located just south of the Trowbridge Livestock Center, the MSL will provide a new vision for meat processing to support teaching, research and Extension activities, ultimately boosting the economic value of raising livestock for producers across Missouri. Dr. Wiegand will serve as its director.

Students heard from Ben Brown, the state row crop economics extension specialist, and saw a presentation about the Grape and Wine Institute lab from Dean Volenberg, the viticulture program leader at Mizzou. They also enjoyed student-made Buck's ice cream.

Missouri Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn wrapped up their day by announcing next year’s MAbA ambassadors.

High school students across the state earn MAbA memberships through a competitive application and interview process. The 2026 class consists of 30 high-achieving agriculture and FFA students who are rising juniors and two ambassadors who attended the academy prior year.

The group toured agribusinesses, explored educational opportunities and met with agricultural leaders in the St. Louis area earlier in the week before ending their trip on Mizzou’s campus. Our thanks to the Missouri Department of Agriculture for including CAFNR in their tour! by @cafnr
