I was one of the first developers in the world to try Snap’s new Specs, before they were even announced! 😱 It was so hard to keep this secret for 2 months though 😂 Last week I attended my first AWE ever and what an experience. I saw my face and my Lens Apollo 11 on the big screen during Evan Spiegel’s keynote, plus all around the screens in the Specs space at the venue. Still feels surreal honestly. Got to briefly chat with Bobby Murphy, Snap’s co-founder and CTO, too, which was a pretty wild moment on its own. The device itself blew me away: so much lighter and more wearable than I expected, this finally feels like something you’d actually want to wear every day. Plus they brought the charging case back! It was so good to reconnect with friends and meet new people in the industry, that part alone made the trip worth it. We won 2nd place in the Lensathon 2024! 🥈 Snap Inc. invited 80 developers and creators from all around the world to participate in a hackathon, with the challenge of designing Lenses for @spectacles that could enhance people’s lives or foster social connections. Our team developed a Lens that identifies emotions and suggests conversation starters based on how someone is feeling, making interactions more intuitive and engaging. Experiencing the Lens directly through Spectacles felt much more natural compared to a phone. A big congratulations to all the winners and participants - everyone’s projects were truly inspiring! Special thanks to my amazing team - you made these days so special and fun! Last but not least, the Handsome Lens was a runner-up for Best Viral Lens of 2024! 😱 I didn’t take the prize home, but I’m thrilled to see how far this Lens has come! 2023 Lens Fest / Lensathon 👻 In 2021, I quit a stable job and abandoned my engineering career to focus on building my own AR business. The journey of a solo entrepreneur is full of ups and downs, but being invited by one of the world's largest social media companies to participate in a five-day hackathon in Santa Monica alongside some of the most talented AR creators and developers makes me think I'm on the right path. Thank you so much @thefraag, @joe_darko, and the entire team at Snap for making this possible. What an incredible week! So much useful information and so many exciting features. SPECS launch event in Beverly Hills, what a week! First, I was invited to appear on camera next to Bobby Murphy, Snap’s cofounder and CTO, during the keynote, where they showcased the SPECS calling feature. Then I got to chat with him for a bit and watch the rest of the keynote sitting next to him and his wife. As if that wasn’t enough, Evan Spiegel, Snap’s CEO, demoed Apollo 11 live on stage! I’ve been working on this experience for 6 months with the SPECS team (more on that in another post), so it felt surreal to have the whole audience watching it. And what a community we have here! It felt so good to reconnect with all the friends I made along this journey. Talk about iconic! Caio Alves built an AR experience for Spectacles that puts the Apollo 11 moon mission in your living room. You put on the glasses and walk around the spacecraft, the lunar surface, the earth hanging in space. He used some of NASA's publicly released assets and built the rest himself. AR developer and Specs Developer Ambassador Caio Alves thinks smart glasses will replace smartphones. He admits that might sound optimistic. His reasoning: right now we walk through the world attached to screens, missing what's actually in front of us. Glasses keep the screens — but let you stay present in the real world at the same time.
