I’m not always calm, sometimes I get irritated, or lose it when it’s midnight and there are multiple heavy teen conversations happening on my bed when all I wanna do is sleep (iykyk). I still have hard days, I apologize a LOT. But one thing I’ve realized in parenting is that a lot of ā€œparenting problemsā€ really stem from nervous system dysregulation.

I started learning breathwork when motherhood was HARD for me. Like, daily crying date with myself in my bathroom hard. I was postpartum with my third and I was really struggling to not only regulate myself, but I didn’t feel like I deserved to communicate my needs out loud (this worked out really well as I’m sure you can imagine).

What I didn’t realize was how much working on my own regulation would ripple into my relationships with my girls. How close it would make us. How they would practice things they witnessed ME doing to regulate myself. This is generational wealth 🄹

If you’re in any season of motherhood, know that I see you - and what you see here is not how it’s always looked for me. It’s damn hard, and it brings out all the triggers, all the wounds, and all the opportunity for growth. Maybe you’re looking for ways to help that inner child heal from things that you haven’t touched for years. I hope you feel seen here šŸ«¶šŸ»

I went to a breathwork session a while back, and even as someone who has a regular breathwork practice, I left feeling pretty unsettled. It wasn’t because the facilitator didn’t have good intentions…I genuinely think they cared deeply about the practice and the people in the room. But it reminded me that good intentions and trauma informed facilitation aren’t always the same thing.

What really stayed with me happened as I was putting my shoes on to leave. I started making small talk (my fav lol) with another woman, and I’ll never forget the look on her face - it was almost like confusion mixed with fear. She said ā€œThat was...interesting. Honestly, as someone who still struggles with anxiety, that style of breathing made me feel more triggered than grounded. I actually kind of feel worse.ā€

That conversation has stayed with me as a facilitator ever since.

It reinforced something I believe deeply which is the way I guide people matters just as much as the practice itself. The space being held is arguably more important than learning a specific breath pattern. Breathwork can be incredibly healing, but it can also bring up a lot. That’s why creating a space where people have choice and permission to slow down or opt out isn’t optional for me - it’s an essential part of how I guide.

It isn’t about AVOIDING intensity but making sure people never feel like they have to override their body in order to heal or ā€œdo it rightā€. I always remind people to go at their own pace, to come back to their natural breath if needed, and honestly to remember the goal is meeting your body and nervous system where it’s at - not where you think it should be.

To the feelers and other highly sensitive ones out there (and everyone)- if you’ve ever had an experience like this, you’re not doing breathwork wrong if your nervous system hasn’t felt safe in these situations - it deserves to. šŸ«¶šŸ»

Have you ever had an experience like this?

I’m truly grateful for every version of myself > especially knowing that some of my deepest pain, insecurities and lowest points brought me to a better knowing of myself.

But I spent yearssss so aware of everyone else’s emotions and regulation - when it got time for me to express mine - I didn’t even know how. When I finally started practicing voicing my needs out loud, I couldn’t find the words because I hadn’t accessed that part of me.

Being highly sensitive comes with the gift of literally being able to pick up cues that other people miss - shifts in vibes, energy, tone of voice. But I’ve learned that noticing these things does not need to mean taking them on. ā€œReleasing what isn’t mine to carryā€ is a daily practice, that I’m still working on. Breathwork and nervous system work literally changed my life, and allowed me to start not only feeling things I had suppressed for years, but to let go of trying to always manage everyone around me.

If you can relate - you’re not alone and I hope you’re finding your voice a little bit more today too šŸ«¶šŸ»

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of guiding a group through a breathwork class on detachment. My classes are so much more than breathing - I believe in deep connection with the body and learning how that affects our breath, so I’m gonna get you thinking, breathing AND moving✨ Only when we can meet our bodies where they actually are is when we can actually drop into breathwork, into the work of detachment and radical acceptance. It’s such a connective process. This is the sequence I opened with and I hope you take 5 minutes to go through it today too šŸ«¶šŸ»

As a side note - it made me laugh a little that it’s summer and my teens are home and blasting their music while I filmed this, which you can hear in the background if you listen. A real life reminder to detach from needing the perfect timing or environment or quiet space to practice ā˜ŗļø

Come see me @ritual.nj on 7/26 for my next class: Romanticizing Regulation from 6:30-730pm, you can sign up on the app or send me a DMšŸ’–

Gentle reminder - you’re allowed to pause. Get outside and listen to those birds (!!!!), and sit with your breath for 30 seconds. You have time. šŸ«¶šŸ»

Inhale through the nose for 4 > use the pause at the top to be your anchor > exhale > pause at the bottom to remind your nervous system one more time that there is so much power in letting go of urgency.

I’m using my welllll loved @komusodesign necklace for my exhales - this is a tool that gently helps you to mimic the ā€œblowing through a strawā€ breath, naturally extending your exhale and bringing your body down to a grounded state. Comment SLOW or tap the link in my bio for a 20% discount on this necklace, and tell me if you try this breath today šŸ¦ā€ā¬›šŸ–¤
