25, This one’s different. My first birthday without you.

This past Sunday I lived through one of my biggest fears and worst nightmares.. A very special piece of my heart was taken with you that early morning. Time seemed to stand still and blend together all at once and I’m still trying to find my grounding in all of this.

But today, I honor and celebrate you Papa. I celebrate 25 years of loving you earth side, of loving you my entire life. To say you are someone close to me would be an understatement. I could talk forever about all the memories you and I have together. I am eternally grateful for every second I got to spend with you and no matter how long we’d have together, it would never be enough.

I am so incredibly lucky to have the privilege to call you my Papa. There is no one like you. You are one in a trillion to me. I could not imagine my life without you and I don’t know how I’m going to now. There’s a part of me that still doesn’t believe you’ve left, another part that is happy you’re at peace and no longer suffering and another part of me that feels like I’m going to break at any and every given moment. I miss you, I miss you so much it hurts to breathe at times. But I know you taught me to be strong, to be resilient, to be a granddaughter you’re proud of. And I will continue to do everything in my life with you in mind and in my heart.

To know you is to love you and I love you more than you’ll ever know Papa. I hope you’re winning big with your stocks and on your favorite slot machines! I refuse to say goodbye but rather I’ll see you again. Until then, I like to think that every time the sun touches my face - it’s you giving me a warm hug, when the sky is painted in pretty colors - it’s you smiling down on me, when the stars are twinkling at night - it’s you laughing with me. You are always with me and when we do meet again, I can’t wait to feel your warm embrace, see your smile, hear your laugh and have that special piece of my heart returned back to its rightful place.
