More to come, my brain is oatmeal, this was the most insane experience of my liiiiife, and I’m so damn grateful for every person who made this possible. This show has been a dream in the making since 2017 and I couldn’t be happier with how our first ever EdFringe went.

Thank you to my incredible cast, production team, design team, every audience member who came out to see us, @greensidevenues for having us, my family for their unwavering support, our incredible PR team @tinponypr and my SISTER for being the best teammate/collaborator/STAR in the entire world. THANK YOU EVERYONE. I am just so damn inspired and can’t wait to see what’s up next for @theyellowwallpaperplay

Another 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you @markfernyhough for this glowing review and absolutely stunning photographs! 💛

“Adapted for the stage by siblings Caitlin and Megan Ort, The Yellow Wallpaper is an explosive work combining contemporary dance, physical theatre and surrealist horror. This six-person show takes Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s classic tale and morphs it into a truly electric work of performance art. The staging is both precise yet anarchic, as our heroine is rapidly engulfed by wallpaper-induced madness.

Despite all the insanity, there is no lack of glamour. With a universally attractive cast, the show could win additional accolades for excellent hair. A splendidly spirited, wild and vital work. 5 Stars”

Just a few more stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“…This is fabulous theatre, brilliantly rehearsed and performed, bringing a classic text to stage in a fashion which will encourage the attention and thoughts of a whole new generation. It’s bold, sexy, scary and serious, and it’s the level of credible accomplishment that all companies should dream of bringing to the Festival stage.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — British Theatre Guide

“This is a bold adaptation. The setting remains rooted in its original period, but the staging introduces a strikingly modern interpretation – ranging from the use of sound to dynamic dance movement and transitions. The mood, established from the outset by the haunting strains of Billie Eilish’s “Bury A Friend”, never lets up.

The narrative is both punctuated and driven by an ensemble of three characters, seemingly a manifestation of Jane’s inner thoughts and emotions – frustration, fury, hurt, and so much more. By turns, they dance, move, and react to events unfolding in the room. Yet, it is those moments of stillness that Jane is most exposed – defensive, introspective, seething rage, but always vulnerable.

This directorial choice [by @caitlingort ] makes for a breathtaking and innovative spectacle, the pace relentless, juxtaposing with - and somehow belying - the static confines of the attic bedroom. The quite excellent ensemble (@megan.ort, @oliviahelaine, @mymusialmylife, @clairevanbever, @morganblanchard, and @palomadauria) bring a visceral physicality to the production, with Ort consistently catching the eye as Jane.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Rialto Arts

““The Ort sisters’ The Yellow Wallpaper is an absurd and mesmerising adaptation of a seminal feminist text that had me completely absorbed in the room of yellow wallpaper with Jane. The performance invites conversation about the text’s original message as medical misogyny persists and women’s bodily autonomy remains contested today.
I would highly recommend this show to fans of the original text or anyone who likes the sound of a visceral, genre-bending experience infused with horror and female rage.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — For the Plot by @caitlingort

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from @thesmureviews!

“What elevates this beyond a straightforward period piece is how it reaches into the present; the production is at its strongest when it balances the two kinds of imprisonment Gilman writes about: the literal barred nursery and the prison of the narrator’s own mind, each feeding the other in a cycle of self-fulfilling prophecy. The history of women being institutionalised, ‘rest-cured’ and disbelieved sits at the story’s core. Gilman herself drew on her own treatment under a leading nerve specialist of the era to write it, and while the production itself makes no such nods, I couldn’t help thinking of Britney Spears’ conservatorship, the ongoing conversations around medical paternalism and the ways in which contemporary ‘wellness’ can be performed and imposed.

By its end, this is not just a ghost story about a woman losing her mind in a locked room; it’s a gripping and emotional hour of dance-theatre that suggests the ‘hysteria’ diagnosis and the impulse to silence women deemed too much never really left. Hauntingly staged, sharply danced, and quietly furious underneath: highly recommended.”

The reviews are in 💛

Don’t miss this “hauntingly beautiful” dance-theatre thriller adaptation of the classic story. Performing every day at 16:05 at Greenside at George St from now until August 29!

“[A] bold ‘dance-theatre thriller’ from sisters Caitlin and Megan Ort. It’s certainly the liveliest adaptation of a dark 19th Century feminist classic you’re likely to see and is consistently enjoyable.” - The Scotsman

“The choreographic element bring[s] the supernatural and psychological aspects of the story to life...a balletic psychodrama, energetically blurring the boundary between Jane’s life of confinement and the spectral surreality of her imagination.” - Get Your Coats On

“The wallpaper itself (which moves and mutates) is extremely well realised, and there are moments when performance, lighting and sound combine to create a genuinely alarming and suffocating vibe. The character work is equally brilliant. A clever take on a classic work.” - Starburst Magazine

“The show was excellently presented, from the dancers and ensemble who added an eerie depth to the play, through to the visual elements which helped create the unsettling world surrounding Jane.” - Theatre Village

Another one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Megan Ort is a highly expressive actor, whose first-person narration as Jane directly engages the audience, with her emotional state enhanced by bursts of vivid movement and dance. Morgan Blanchard portrays her doctor husband John as a loving spouse with sinister undertones as he administers the drugs to subjugate his wife; in this he is assisted by his sister Jennie, portrayed as a darkly smouldering femme fatale by Paloma D’Auria.

The choreographic element of this production does much to bring the supernatural and psychological aspects of the story to life; what would otherwise be mere narration is transformed into a balletic psychodrama, energetically blurring the boundary between Jane’s life of confinement and the spectral surreality of her imagination. The ghostly figures behind the wallpaper and the pent-up emotions in the room are physically brought to life by a trio of dancers: Maya Musial, Annie Sherman, and Claire van Bever. Their viscerally expressive movement is hypnotic as, by turns, they claustrophobically surround and haunt Jane, then express her frustration with wide-eyed writhing and terpsichorean leaps.

This is a feminist horror story like you’ve never seen before. This American troupe brought the audience to their feet for a standing ovation at the end of an action-packed hour in the Lime Studio, Greenside @ George Street. The show runs for the whole of the Fringe, but this medium-sized auditorium has a limited number of seats, so secure your tickets soon.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — @getyourcoatson
