Day 16 of the #august_coverartchallenge23 asks us to choose our favorite grail. I recently grabbed Batman 181, the first appearance of Poison Ivy, my favorite character. This absolutely must be my choice for day 16. If you haven’t read Ivy’s first appearance, it is a fun story that starts with Ivy upset that she is not noted as the #1 female criminal and follows her attempts to top the list.

If you’re interested in giving this a read, DC did release a facsimile this year.

Day 17 of #august_coverartchallenge23 asks us to select our favorite cover art. Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 was the first slabbed comic I’ve ever owned. The artwork by one of my favorite artists, George Perez, inspired a number of homages throughout the last 25+ years. While not the first cover to depict a hero grieving another in their arms, it is probably the most iconic. I have been recently collecting covers inspired by this one.

I also finally picked up all 12 issues of Crisis on Infinite Earths and I look forward to reading this significant storyline in comic history.

Wow! I read a LOT in June with nearly 3,500 pages!

By far, the best book was Chain Gang Allstars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah about a “voluntary” death match at for profit prisons which provides a well done critique of the prison industrial complex, corporate exploitation & capitalism, and systemic racism. This novel also explores justice and freedom. I cannot recommend this book enough and I am excited to add Friday Black to my tbr list. This is potentially my second fave read of the year behind Psalm of the Wild Built.

After Yesteryear in May, I have been looking for more related books so I read a memoir called A Well Trained Wife that shares Tia Levings taking back control in her life after joining a fundamentalist group and experiencing an abusive marriage. It was interesting but I am just not a fan of memoirs.

I took Pride very seriously and read four Romance novels (not my usual read) and my favorite was probably an ice hockey book that is unrelated to Heated Rivalry 🤣

Stoked to visit @thewickedpress this afternoon to pick up a new read and this delicious Wicked Latte. Definitely take a visit! Excited to read Girl Next Door by @rachelmeredithwrites who is also from CT!

I also had the pleasure of seeing Girls Like Girls by @hayleykiyoko after work yesterday. I can’t believe she was able to bring this story to the big screen. It was about 8 years ago when I first saw Hayley perform this song live on tour. What a great start to the week 😁

Archie Comics 83 was published about a month after Showcase 4, making it a very early Silver Age comic. The Archie titles played a big role in starting my comics journey and this particular issue is possibly my favorite cover.

Another Golden Age comics that I love is this Black Cat 5 from Harvey Comics which follows a Hollywood actress and former stunt woman who becomes a crimefighter. Such a gorgeous cover!
