POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hi. Ya I’m in LA - I haven’t posted stuff about it cause I deleted the app from my phone a while back so I have barely been checking Instagram at allllll which I must say has been pretty sweet. I’m missing out on a lot of stuff but you know, time spent, Idno. (Text me.)
I’m working on the LA MW 🫪 I can show you some process photos another time. BUT! I am spending a lot of my free time ogling the plants and the water here in Venice, it’s endlessly entrancing!!! So many gorgeous aliens! The ocean is ceaselessly mesmerizing! Going to the beach rq for sunset after work is something I still haven’t fully absorbed is just a thing one can do whenever they want. Also LA is bonkers and overwhelming and beyond saturated with everything ever. It’s a boundless psychic landscape of collaged dreams nightmares banalities and mysteries. Filthy sticky squalor and uber luxury artifice not quite making eye contact while coexisting within botanical garden level overgrowth and perpetual road construction. Palaces on slimy canals. Egrets and encampments. Prophets and demons both selling merch on the boardwalk. So I’m painting ocean cabbages. Pearlescent seaweed tangles as gross and gorgeous as this place I still can’t believe I’m living in for a couple more months.
Um, gouache on paper. Oh yeah and my gouache got moldy? wtf humidity no thank you.

I don’t even know what to say about getting to be one of the short list of artists who’ve collaborated with the simpsons on their couch gag!! This was sooooo fun to do! A much needed throw back to the early days where we didn’t need to worry about durability etc, we just let color and form and humor lead the day. Making friends laugh by putting a silly objects together is one of my favorite experiences in life! Huge congrats to everyone who made thinks wild thing happen, especially @emilyamontoya who creative directed / directed this whole assemblage situation and timelapse sequence. It’s sooooo weird and amazing to get to now be part of the long strange history of the simpsons. It’s crazy to think back to being a kid, getting my parents to move the furniture around so we could watch the simpsons from the dinner table, and trying to tell little me hey in 25 years you’ll be literally (imperceptibly) on screen during the couch gag 😂 (but hey little me don’t watch the episode it’s attached to, it’s too gorey 😅)
I’ll have to make another post of the animated section! Talk about surreal experiences… by @caitykennedy

Participated in a live painting auction last night as part of the benefit event for @theburritobrigade at @tumblerootsf. 3 hours paining “from scratch” (painted the background dark blue ahead of time) but with a vague plan. Fell back on what I know I can do fast so it’s very much like my Houston mural because that also had to happen very fast. Chose the same colors because why not.
Live painting is very funny, people ask funny questions and say really kind things. “Are you an artist” always baffles me. I said “no first time” a couple times and got a couple laughs and at least one look of stunned credulity. One sweet person asked if it would bother me if they watched me paint. Luckily the answer is no not at all! Especially lucky since doing live painting would really suck if it did bother me haha.
Lots of lovely comments including “I love where you go [gestures to own head] in your mind.” And, when I was just starting; very excitedly “oh I see what you’re doing! it’s like moonlight, a forest under the moon!”
Painting with a really tight deadline is an interesting challenge, I know I can paint fast that’s no issue but it doesn’t leave you any time to look for alternative ideas. I like this painting but it’s missing something, some unexpected second idea.
Jon suggested putting a creech in at the last minute, do you see it? by @caitykennedy

Here, something pretty to look at instead.
Noodle daisy. Digital drawing. Daytime nighttime linetime.
Also last slide is of @lindsekennedy as a baby, with me in the background on a bike. 1988 or 1989? On the “farm” outside Eudora, Kansas, that we lived on when Lindsey was born. It wasn’t a real farm, tho it had a pony and some chickens, it was a wildlife rehabilitation facility owned by the university of Kansas. We lived there because my mom helped run the program, rescuing wild animals and nursing them back to health. They kept the birds of prey and mid sized mammals in pens on the former farm. The pony, Toby, was a laboratory rescue. They got him goats to keep him company. Lots of strange and beautiful and funny stories from that place, will have to dig out some old photos to share. For example, the porch in the background of the photo later had a rotting old piano on it that I loved to pretend to play. My mom would check before we went out there though because sometimes the local owls would use the piano as a perch while eating some small mammal.
I have this photo readily available because it was Lindsey’s birthday on Sunday (: 💞💞💞 love you Lindsey!! Wow what a world! Im so happy to be in it with you! by @caitykennedy

Another person pond study. (Acrylic in board 8x12ish?) This was supposed to be a nighttime scene, grassy puddle full of stuff with a little glow to it and it turned out completely different than I intended. Love when paintings make their own decisions! Though fun to do I still don’t know what I want to do for a big version. Maybe a I’ll just keep making color studies by @caitykennedy

This is Rainbow Angel, our tribute to Matt that now sits in Cowboix Hevven in Houston. I’m a year and a half late.
I was looking for photos of these hands and realized I never posted pictures of this guy, finished or unfinished.
Cole, Cat, Sofia and I sculpted him, and Matthew Erdmann designed the armature. Many more skilled people contributed to build and wire and figure him out.
I sculpted the hair and the hands, and I’m quite proud of both. They’re made of instamorph, and I did a lot of r&d to make the fiber optics and tattoos work right.
Cat is responsible for his remarkable wings and hat.
Cole made his face.
We all chipped in on sculpting and painting his body.
Building this was very bizarre, very bittersweet. It was an honor to build him, to sort of make him a new body out of indestructible materials. To study his posture, his style, and to share in the sweet sadness of all knowing these things by heart already. “His elbows should be more out, his back more hunched. His boot toes more pointed up. Yeah more like a crazy spider monkey yes exactly.” During the process I got a tattoo added to my hand in homage of his, which I helped him design anyway. I wanted to get his hair perfect, because it was beautiful and because I thought it would be important to him. It probably isn’t (perfect or terribly important to him) but I’m proud to have tried.
I’m not sure why today is the day to finally post about this project, but I miss him. I miss Matt the person, and I miss the insistently present spirit that was around constantly the first year or so after he died. I don’t see him much anymore, which is healing I suppose. It’s funny to miss the rawness of grief, the closeness found in the pain of it. I know he’s right here, and I know he’s out riding rainbows and exploring the other side. Come back and visit more often eh? by @caitykennedy

It can feel crazy doing art in times like these. I know it’s healthy n whatever but it feels crazy to enjoy practically anything right now. However, it feels like an act of defiance to just keep thriving as something/someone the administration would love to eliminate. We must organize, march, donate, educate, support our neighbors and make change AND we must make art, experience culture, support our neighbor’s businesses, and just be the diverse queer community oriented weirdos that we are! Making art and music - creating beauty for each other - is in itself an act of defiance. We must fight against their inhumanity, and we must simultaneously build the beautiful world we know to be possible. Make art today, send money if you have it to groups doing good work, show up for your community in the ways you can. Take care of yourself and each other. Be safe out there. by @caitykennedy
