A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance of the Earth's magnetic field, typically triggered by solar activity on the sun.

These storms can cause a coronal mass ejection, which sends particles from the sun on a fast wind toward Earth. If these particles interact with our magnetic field, we get the northern lights.

To the human eye, they generally appear as faint colors and as shades of grey and white. However, on October 10, 2024, millions were treated to the green, pink, and red lights of the aurora borealis. The vibrant colours were stunning! I'm so glad I was able to experience and photograph the amazing experience!

Green herons are one of the few species of bird known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the green heron then grabs and eats the fish.

Tree Swallows are graceful, sreamlined songbirds with long, pointed wings and a short, squared, or slightly notched tail. Their bills are very short and flat.

Tree Swallows feed in flight and are extremely acrobatic. They are important in nature as they help to control insect populations, such as mosquitoes and other insects we consider pests. During an average day, adult tree swallows soar, swoop, and dive to consume about 2,000 flying insects!

This one is peeking out of a nesting box before resuming feeding.

Eastern Kingbirds are sturdy flycatchers. Their black heads, blackish back, and white bellies, combined with their white-tipped tail, make them distinctive.
One of the factors contributing to why the small songbird is called a Kingbird is that they are fierce protectors of their nest and territory, even against larger birds such as herons and hawks.

I was watching this Great Blue Heron fish when I caught sight of the huge turtle sunning in the background. I believe it's a snapping turtle, which is the largest turtle species here in Southern Ontario. My internet search tells me that they grow to about 14 inches (36 cm), but I swear this one is larger than that especially considering that adult Great Blue Herons are between 38-54 inches (97-137 cm).

In 2022, Grace, a well-known snapping turtle in Haliburton, was estimated to be at least 125 years old, and she was approximately 15 inches (38 cm). It makes me wonder just how old this snapper is!

Yellow Warblers are migratory birds, making a lengthy annual journey from their winter homes in Central and South America to their breeding grounds in North America. Their migratory paths are a testament to their endurance and navigational abilities.

The Cedar Waxwing is an extremely social bird found in small flocks to huge gatherings. The collective nouns for a flock of this species are “ear-full” and “museum.”

Time passes so quickly. It's almost 2 years since my last post...how is that possible! Meanwhile, I haven't stopped taking photos, so here's a shot of a Tree Swallow.

One of the best things about wandering about with my camera is discovering new species that I didn't know existed.

Even when everyone else is like, 'duh!' Lol!

This is a Great Crested Flycatcher that I recently observed at a local conservation area. In Canada, this species can be found in southern Manitoba, extreme southern portions of the St-Lawrence forest of Ontario, Quebec, northeast Nova Scotia and parts of Prince Edward Island. They dwell mostly in the treetops and are rarely found on the ground.

Apparently, I need to look up more often!
