AKA Jesse who formed the OG Creative Technology Melbourne (formerly Media Lab Melbourne) group and is the secret mastermind behind many of the interactives you'll see in the exhibition. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Jesse Stevens and Dean Petersen are Cake Industries. For over 20 years they've explored the complexities and absurdity of modern life through media arts and mechanical sculpture. They like to think of their works as being performative extensions of themselves.

Radical Computing opens this weekend!
19 Sep 2026–21 Feb 2027
NCM, 375 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn
Wurundjeri Country

What a ride the last 20 years have been. Cake Industries will never go away, it will always be us. But things have changed, we've done so much but have transformed as people. While we're consciously putting everything into a nice archive, we're also reflecting on this bittersweet moment.

Keep pushing, keep making, keep dreaming. Cake Industries forever. by @cake_industries

Meet Eliza, the world’s first chatbot from the 1960s 👾⌨️

Before ChatGPT, before Siri… people were already asking, “Is this thing actually thinking?”

Jesse Stevens from NCM Studio (@cake_industries) explains why this OG chatbot still matters today.

That feeling when you meet WABOT-2 for the first time 🤖💜

Hero of our new exhibition FRIEND, WABOT-2 (1984, Waseda University) has arrived in Australia for the very first time... and the NCM team is buzzing! Particularly @cake_industries, who has been a fan of WABOT-2 since he was a kid. 😍

In FRIEND, WABOT-2 is displayed alongside rare vintage footage from Waseda University showing it in action at the keyboard.

FRIEND was curated by @jemimah_jemimah_ and is a collaboration between NCM and @ryoheymurakami_studiobowl.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through @creative.australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

🎉 Hackers (1995) turns 30!

Jesse, one of our awesome Digital Media Techs (@cake_industries) reflects on how this cult classic inspired a generation of internet misfits (his words 😜). Thanks for sharing, Jesse!

Did you watch this movie when it came out?

📽️ Directed by Iain Softley, starring Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie, Jesse Bradford.

That time years ago when Jesse wrote some software to follow your face in video calls so you didn't have to align your camera, but it had no understanding of multiple faces and would jitter blend people together. Horrifying results.. by @cake_industries

We're sorry to say that for now our workshop on making your own synthesizer due to happen later this month has been cancelled for now due to rapidly rising COVID numbers and fear for the safety of audiences and ourselves in a very hands on environment. We will still be running it a little later on, maybe in a couple of months, but for now we've had to make this decision which has been hard emotionally after all of the work we've put into it, as well as financially.

Get in touch if you've already bought a ticket and things will be sorted.

Back to the drawing board...
