Meet Cal Mac (@cal_mac_x ), finalist MA Fine Art (Sculpture), who is currently showing in the Slade MA/MFA Degree Show.

Cal Mac (b.1997 Paisley, Scotland) is a Glaswegian artist based in London. Mac’s practice is rooted in film, performance, ceramics, and painting. The viewer is at the root of his process. Impressions of Scottish landscapes, home and belonging are extracted from memory and given to the viewer as gestures of care. The ceramics are derived from a pool of early romantic sculpture, spiritual influences, and standing stones, as objects of guardiancy. Recent paintings are simple horizons – blue sea, slightly lighter sky, enacting the respite of dusk. His writing is largely collaged prose. Personal recollections are crossed with objective scientific observation: family dynamics with the inner workings of boat engines; the impressionists with the genetics of roses. They’re expressed intermittently to the viewer, like conversation, each time unearthing more and more of a subconscious.

For the degree show he made a vibrating floor, which harmonises with the sounds of truck engines, bagpipes, humming and the cello. Everything blends together there’s very few edges. Sound and vibration merge and are conducted through the viewers bones. So in way the viewer’s body is the material.

He says: “My work is centred around the concept of care, belonging and landscapes. I made a show that I think invites people to slow down. It’s not about the work being something to look at. It's about it being somewhere to be, for wandering off, for introspection, for daydreaming, whatever. It's about you thinking about whatever you need to think about.”

Catch his performances on Saturday 20 June at 1:30pm and Sunday 21 June at 3pm. Cal Mac’s show is in the Basement, Studio 16.

Soooooo my time at @sladeschool has come to an end and I have very much put literal blood sweat and tears and also my lungs my back my heart soul and sanity into this?? Tbc..

Don’t have the words right now to say how much I love everyone at slade and how much they’ve done for me. Lots to say about the show etc coming soon..

They’re expressed intermittently to the viewer, like conversation, each time unearthing more and more of a subconscious.

His work has been screened at Recontres Internationales (Paris and Berlin), Atlas Arts (Skye), The Royal Scottish Academy (Edinburgh), Limerick Institute of Technology, and online for Lift off Festival and Film and Video Umbrella. Following his first commission from Film and Video Umbrella in 2020, Mac has done residencies at Cove Park, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and the Margaret Tait residency in Orkney (2024). In 2022 he gave the Ben Read Memorial Lecture for the Royal Society of Sculptors in Leeds. His solo exhibitions include ‘Drums and Silence’ Aye Festival, Glasgow (2022) and ‘Bloodbath’ Outlier, Glasgow (2023). In 2026 Mac will graduate from Sculpture (MFA) at the Slade School of Fine Art.
