‘…times change, but i’ll always remember,
i don’t know where i’d be without you…’

tomorrow starts a month that i know will be hard. but the last few weeks sure have been a reminder that things are always what you make of them…

to memories of kitty, super lytes for days, turtles + signs from above, eye masks that save your life, concerts, summer house chats for hours on end, book club (even being so stressed you have to leave book club) (i’ll be back), forgiving + being forgiven, the first days of nice weather, are we finally a matcha girlie?, too many miles on the road, chips + guac for days, full moons, family events, pinched shoulder nerves + ice packs, cancelled plans, becoming a cavs fan, + hang outs with those that have become family…

someone reminded me recently that the right people always show up when you need them to. even when, sometimes, you aren’t sure you deserve it. that’s just what family does.

no one tells you how hard 10 months can be. yes, thanksgiving, christmas, easter… every holiday and every normal day, they are all hard. but as you get closer to that year mark, every day feels more raw. it’s like you just lost them. the immediate loneliness from that first night without them is back. you realize you have made almost 365 days of memories without your shadow by your side. i am worried I’ll forget how you begged when you wanted human food, how you cuddled in the nook of my knees, or how your paws smelled.

but today was a beautiful day, and i know that’s from kitty. just like all of the signs she’s sent me, all the reminders, and the quiet “hi dad”s.

i read a quote today: ‘there are good days and hard days for me - even now. don’t let the hard days win.’ kitty would never let me let the hard days win, because she was the strongest girl in the world. she went from not knowing how to be a dog to being THE dog that so many people loved. she made her mark on the world, and i only hope i do the same. so, through all the tears that fell while i sorted through videos and pictures, i know it’ll be okay. i may have lost my shadow 10 months ago, but i gained so much love throughout our time together, i’d never trade it for the world. i can make it through the loss. because kitty made it through so much for me.

Cale has infinite shenanigans in his life that keeps us all laughing and cringing! Whether it's an idea to start a book club, or author event he's willing to drive 3 hours to and get hit by an animal on his way home. He always makes us laugh so hard we are crying. i hope i did you proud. and i hope i was able to give you a life that was half as fulfilling as what you gave me. i love you so much. and i promise that until we are together again, i’ll live a life full of adventures that you’d enjoy. and i know you’ll still be with me, every step of the way. 🐾 💕

when i started this, my heart had been shattered for a little over a month. my toe was still broken, and i was somehow dealing with pelvic floor issues (hello, 41, haha). but on 07.26, one day shy of a month after losing kitty, i wrote down what healing would look like.

i was so lost after losing her. it felt like part of me was forever taken. i still had kitty’s medicine sitting out, and people said “just get rid of it.” but that medicine wasn’t just medicine—it was a reminder of the love i knew so unconditionally that was no longer here. i couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, and couldn’t make sense of anything. i hadn’t felt this low since 2021.

back in 2020, on his 40th bday, i got tim an entry into the virtual cleveland marathon. when he submitted his time, he told me he shaved a bit off to get a better ranking 😂 since it was under my email, i got his results. we have several exchanges back and forth, and i’ve reread them more times than i can count. to say tim was an inspiration puts it lightly. my time was nowhere near as fast as his, but he pushed me through. people don’t understand. they never have. finally, i don’t need them to anymore.

kitty could never run, but she loved her slow walks where she smelled everything. tim ran so fast, he’d leave me in his dust. i’d constantly end up lost among the paths of cleveland.

the world can yell at you, or smother you in silence. sometimes that silence is the most deafening. but peace and healing are still there. to find them, sometimes you have to sprint like tim. other times, you have to slow down and just be, like kitty.

in ways i still can’t fully describe, tim helped me find the strength to remember kitty, love her, and rebuild in a way that would make them both proud.

it was a honor to spend so many hours and miles this summer training with you both in my thoughts. and as the tears mixed with the pouring rain during that last mile, i felt you with every step. thank you. 🩶

kitty and tim changed me. and i’m determined to make that change something good. so here’s to the beginning…

9 years ago, on this mlk jr. day, kitty came into our lives so unexpectedly. she crawled in my lap, stared at me, and we immediately decided that she needed to come home.

9 whole years- with so many memories, SO many photos, and so many stories. as the years go by, they get a little bit harder. we can’t do stairs. we spend a lot of time at the vet. we are on a lot of pills. our walks are much shorter, and they normally end with being carried the rest of the way home. but the second that sun hits, we are cherishing every second outside. we have had SEVERAL accidents (blame the anxiety). we have met so many friends, by coming with me almost everywhere. a few years ago, we even got a brother. and, after some growing pains, we actually even snuggle together every now and then. a lot has changed over 9 years- but a lot more has stayed the same. and there’s never been a decision that has meant more to me than this day nine years ago.

some people co-parent actual kids, but eric and i co-parent kitty. and i wouldn’t have it any other way. because i know i speak for both of us when i say that she completely changed our lives.

thank you kitty for choosing us on your “gotcha day”. 🐾🩶

Today is such a big day!! It's our fave Vibes guy's birthday!!!

@cale_henry is always quick to say yes to all the shenanigans. Already overwhelmed with life, he's totally in for reading a series. Working 48573929 hours this week, sure let's record 5 podcasts.

He is always so fun, always up for adventure and truly one of the most delightful humans on the planet!
