The cymbal wash has become the front page of the dynamics playbook from 2024, but how can you use it to greatest impact? From my experience (@caleb.kay), the full effectiveness of the cymbal wash is not maximised by drummers.

Cymbal wash mainly does three things:
1. Changes the sonic spectrum of the band (sounds different)
2. Lifts the dynamics musically (Brings up energy!)
3. Emphasises the moment (pay attention!)

Be intentional about where you use it and not just as a generic build up technique.

You’ll want to:
- Take note of the LYRICAL CONTENT of the song
- Pay attention to the CONTEXTUAL DYNAMICS before the wash moment
- COMMIT energy

Wash well everyone! 🛁

This live recording was special and significant for a number of reasons:
- Bethesda Cathedral was the venue @melodiemikeng first attended an @awakengsg live recording, even before she was my girlfriend.
- We took a photo at the end of that live recording with an awkward “leave room for the Holy Spirit” gap and @brandonwmeyer lurking in the background (swipe to see)
- After returning from Mongolia, I convinced Mel to lay down some Kompang parts for this year’s percussion tracks. You might have heard them or missed them. Either way, listen out for them when the album drops.
- This also marks our first time collaborating musically on an AG project.

Mel is more than just my best friend, cheerleader, and supporter. We are definitely on the frontlines together, and we feel it all, the wondrous encounters with the Lord, but also the tough battles—the spiritual warfare and push-back—that arise from courageously stepping out to declare and decree Jesus’ kingship on Earth as in heaven. We need your prayers, every single day 🙏🏼

I honour you, @melodiemikeng, and I love you. taken in Bethesda Cathedral by @caleb.kay

When the worship leader signals to go to chorus before you've finished the build 😳

Sometimes the secret is… building a little longer! (Not every big chorus needs a bigger cymbal wash 🫣) by @caleb.kay
