“Tired and Awake” is out everywhere today. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. Two beautiful college buds now known as @oliverriot were sharing it with the rest of us a lonnng time ago, in some good sounding common area, at a time when company was abundant and time was not.

Much later on, another longtime friend and I had been making it a point to see each other through a time when time was abundant and company was not. One night, probably late, probably sharing a bottle of wine, and probably getting sentimental, @lashblast and I were definitely ready to hear this song in the beautiful house she was sitting.

I’d brought a little tascam field recorder so I set it between us, picked up the guitar, and pressed record. Let it keep you company if that’s what you need this season. Or if it’s just killing time with a good song you want—guaranteed to work. Been doing both with this one since before we all graduated. by @calebtraskmusic

23 months ago to the day, we cancelled our last band gig for the foreseeable future and watched as @thehotelcafe and the rest of the world sadly closed their doors. How you breathing? Right now, breath is feeing precious, scarce, and brittle as ever. Got together with @iammiketaylor and @keshashantrell, and they agreed to help say something that still seems to need saying. The catch: this was initially a response the killing of Philando Castile, which now feels so, so long ago. And yet, the list of unarmed black Americans killed by law enforcement has grown relentlessly in the meantime.
But we’re still using the lungs we’ve got left to demand the kind of change that we hope brings a little more understanding, compassion, and kindness into our communities, especially into those communities for whom the badge has never represented that.
This song has long sat on the shelf for fear of saying the wrong thing, or at the wrong time, but if the time ain’t now, when is it? Let ‘em know we’re all of us free. Happy Juneteenth, friends.
Proceeds from sales today go to the NAACP, and Bandcamp is doing the same with their share.

It gets hard enough to breathe here / without running out of steam / I’m afraid of suffocating / before running down the dream

Heard on the radio there was a line to get to the top of Mt Everest. For most folks, it seems, making a career out of your art is a slow race with a lot of waiting, and the air can get thinner as you go. Everest and art are both also basically impossible to do alone. This Arroyo boyo’s in Nashville for the week. Hit a kid up if 1. You know someone/somewhere in Nashville worth spending a minute on, 2. You want to come give the garden a quick drink sometime this week (and play the baby grand while you’re at it), or 3. You drive stick and could use some wheels between now and Sunday. (meanwhile, please don’t actually hit a kid, growing up is hard enough already)
