a few months ago, i began a passion of mine in which my thesis inspired me to do. in order to hold the archive true to its fullest, those within the community must be the voices that document the archive.

being from both mexicali & calexico, my heart sits in telling the stories of both sides of the border without each other. moments in time where the border is simply (un)done from its fortification purposes call out to me because people, despite the fortification of the US empire, and the entities of this world undo the border by simply living through it.

the farm worker encampment was one of those moments in time. beginning my passion of the archive there, i began to tell not just my story as a transfronterizx individual but my lineage that lived across border that called me to support this encampment while i was in high school.

i noticed people simply broke the border by supporting each other beyond just a regional geographic human space, and far beyond the constraints of the racial geographies of imperial and mexicali.

i got to tell that story with my friends Ismael & Joey, to fully highlight what that moment in time meant, and to fully capture it with the eyes of my borderlands community.

Yesterday, Ismael did an amazing job at hosting young students from The School of Los Angeles on their tour through Imperial Valley. It was invigorating to witness young active minds exposed to life in the borderlands. From visiting local landmarks, to hearing from local artists, Ismael was excellent when it came to keeping students engaged while learning critical information. To close their tour, our team gathered at the SDSU-IV library for some rest. We had the opportunity to speak to 20 students about what IVEJ is all about and how the border relates to environmental justice. It was truly an amazing experience to be able to share our perspectives filled with personal stories to these wonderful students who were eager to learn more about our region.

Ayer, Ismael hizo un trabajo increíble al recibir a jóvenes estudiantes de The School of Los Angeles en su recorrido por el Valle Imperial. Fue estimulante presenciar mentes jóvenes y activas expuestas a la vida en las tierras fronterizas. Desde visitar lugares emblemáticos hasta escuchar a artistas locales, Ismael fue excelente a la hora de mantener a los estudiantes interesados mientras aprendían información crítica. Para cerrar su recorrido, nuestro equipo se reunió en la biblioteca SDSU-IV para descansar un poco. Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con 20 estudiantes sobre de qué se trata IVEJ y cómo se relaciona la frontera con la justicia ambiental. Fue realmente una experiencia increíble poder compartir nuestras perspectivas llenas de historias personales con estos maravillosos estudiantes que estaban ansiosos por aprender más sobre nuestra región.

Today marked a truly remarkable transformation, and Calexico DIY is immensely grateful for the pivotal contributions that made it possible. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Zamas Paint for their generous donation of paint buckets, which proved indispensable in our project.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to Oscar Ontiveros for his kind gesture of letting us use his electric generator for the crucial task of cleaning the fountain and benches prior to commencing our painting work.

Furthermore, we'd like to express our appreciation to the early risers who kick-started the day's efforts at 7:30: Lisa Tylenda, Jesus Solano, and Camilo García. Their dedication set the tone for the day's success.

In addition, we must acknowledge the substantial support from David Soto and David Soto Jr., who arrived with a wealth of equipment, and Calexico Needs a Change for their unwavering support.

Hello Calecíanos,

Next Sunday, we have a special community event planned:

We'll be painting the benches and the fountain to enhance the park's appearance.
Cleaning the park thoroughly to make it more enjoyable for everyone.
To address a previous challenge, we're looking for a generous soul to lend us an electric generator.
Additionally, we could use a grass trimmer to tackle some weeds and make the park even more inviting.

Some of our city council members have been working hard in ensuring equity with the distribution of funding to make sure it goes directly to the community and doesn’t get misused. Finally today, the city will be voting on this specific allocation of ARPA funds which were provided to mitigate financial hardships during COVID. Please go support tonight at 6:30 PM. This Wednesday March 1st Raul Urena was appointed as mayor of Calexico. We have seen a lot of hate circulating social media as a reaction. When this should be a time of celebration for Raul and their family, instead people are instigating and harassing them. No one should feel fear for existing as their true self. On December 23, 2022, the City of Calexico was notified at 12:24pm about an impending release of 30+ asylum seekers. The release was a result of a local shelter that houses asylum seekers reaching capacity earlier in the day. Street releases have occurred on the 24th, 26th, 27th, 30th, and 31st of December including over one hundred individuals. One of the releases included six children who had not eaten and had to be housed in hotels. One child was ill and stable but appeared to have cold symptoms and needed medical services.

Our coalition is part of a resident rapid response team helping with food, clothing and shelter. Please consider making a donation.

El 23 de diciembre a las 12:24pm, la ciudad de Calexico fue notificada de una descarga de más de 30 aplicantes de asilo político en el pais. El descargo se dió en las calles a causa de falta de capacidad en los albergues locales ese día. Descargas callejeras han ocurrido el 24, 26, 27, 30 y 31 de diciembre con un total de más de 100 personas. Una de las descargas incluía seis niños con falta de comida adecuada que fueron albergados en hoteles locales. Uno de los niños padecía de síntomas de influenza y ocupaba servicios médicos
