Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is an evidence-based, psychodynamic approach that can help you understand aspects of your life and your self in a holistic way. It can be complementary to talk therapy and often helps access things that have been difficult to verbalise, or patterns you are struggling to shift.

In a GIM session, we set an intention together of what you would like to focus on or explore. Carefully selected music is used to evoke imagery, memory, emotion, body sensation, and symbolic material. The therapist guides you through this by asking questions that support and deepen the experience. Together we then process and reflect on what emerged and find ways to integrate.

Guided Imagery and Music is a psychotherapeutic approach that can be beneficial for people navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, identity shifts, and persistent emotional patterns that don’t always change through talking alone.

In a GIM session, the music enables you to move beyond everyday cognitive and verbal problem-solving and offers experiences that feel symbolic, emotionally vivid and occasionally spiritual or transpersonal. You are supported and oriented by the therapist to make meaning out of whatever arises.

Carefully selected music is used to support you in accessing subconscious feelings, images, memories and symbols. The therapist actively guides, grounds and deepens the process as these experiences unfold, and helps you reflect and integrate ✨

I currently have appointments open for GIM sessions - DM me to find out more or to make a booking.

Creativity isn’t just expressive. It regulates the nervous system 🧠✨

Evidence from neuroscience and trauma-informed practice shows that creative engagement can lower stress, support emotional regulation and increase a sense of connection and safety in the body.

At times when words feel hard, repetitive cycles emerge or the body and mind feel split, I may offer a creative lens, where words are not needed. These experiences can help settle an over-activated nervous system, gently mobilise stuck energy, and build capacity for regulation.

My work is person-centred and trauma-informed, meaning we follow what feels safe, supportive, and possible in each moment 🌿

What creative practice have you engaged with today? 🎵 🎨 💃 🧘 📷📝

In a session, we’ll talk about what’s going on in your life, or what you want to work on. A music therapist is trained to pick up cues such as body language, tone of voice, posture and affect. I’ll be guided by where you are at in the present moment, and where you want to be.

If it is needed or feels right, we may use music or some form of art-making to work towards your personal goals, to explore your emotions, to help you feel a certain way, or to get your nervous system to it’s desired state.

Music can evoke feelings and insights that we did not know were there, or are finding it difficult to express in words. From there we can process these feelings, or use the new insights to shift patterns.

If you’d like to know more about what music therapy entails, pop me a DM! ✨

Hi, I’m Caley 👋
I’m an HPCSA-registered music therapist and violinist. Music is integral to my sense of self and wellbeing, and in my work, music is a therapeutic and transformational tool that enables self-expression, builds self-awareness, nurtures growth and deepens human connection.

I create a supportive, non-judgemental and creative space to gently explore and integrate the self, the body, the mind and the external world. I use a client-led and resource-oriented approach, and tailor each session to meet the unique needs of every individual.

If you’re looking for a space to explore your emotions, identify and change patterns, develop your self-awareness, regulate your nervous system, move through life transitions, or you’re just curious, get in touch! Music therapy is for everyone - no musical experience is needed 🩵

Most of us use music therapeutically in our daily lives, and we all connect to music in different ways. A music therapist uses this understanding to help you achieve your therapy goals.

Music therapy integrates somatic regulation, emotional processing and psychological meaning. It’s a form of psychotherapy, but instead of only talking, music and other creative methods are used as tools to help you explore your emotions, reduce stress, process trauma and reconnect with yourself.

Music can reveal emotional truth more quickly than a conversation and we can process emotions more quickly when they are given structure and shape through music.

Music therapy is for anyone, not just musicians. Music therapy allows us to tap into our inner-world and our subconscious, giving voice to things that are hard to express in words.

Music therapy has the unique ability to access and support deeper layers of the self - emotions, memories, images and insight.

This is a space for your whole self to be truly heard; not just the parts that are easy to share, but also the complex, messy, overwhelmed, quiet and the unseen. Through music, talking, somatic techniques and creative methods, we listen for what needs attention, expression or healing.

All aspects of your experience are met with respect, curiosity and care, even the ones that haven’t yet found words. by @caleymusictherapy
