Some of Calgary’s history survives because someone thought to photograph it.

George Webber’s LAST CALL brings together colour photographs of the East Village made between 2004 and 2009. It is one example of how his work holds on to a place while the city around it changes.

He has also helped other people learn to look.

CIFF’s programme describes four decades of Webber sharing his love of black-and-white film photography at SAIT, where traditional darkroom courses have been offered for more than 50 years.

Xavier La Prairie’s 12-minute documentary, DECADES: IN THE SAIT DARKROOM WITH GEORGE WEBBER, was part of CIFF 2026. This time, the photographer is the subject.

What part of Calgary would you photograph before it changes?

Calgary, this deserves a round of applause.

The Calgary International Film Festival reaches the final day of its 27th edition today. Back in 2000, the first festival lasted six days and welcomed 8,000 people.

Twenty-six years later, there is plenty to celebrate.

The 2026 programme included more than 100 short films. Servus Free Movie Monday offered 1,000 free tickets on September 28. And @mbarriem of @lhiproductions and @doc_diana_monea, THE LEGACY OF A BUTTERFLY won the Devon Bolton Memorial Alberta Short Film Award.

That is a lot of imagination to bring into one city. And a good reason to take a chance on a film you might never have found on your own.

To the filmmakers, crews, volunteers and audiences who make a film festival possible, this is your celebration too.

Which film from this year’s CIFF stayed with you after the credits?

This helped make Stevie Wonder records. And Calgary has the actual instrument.

It’s called TONTO, a huge synthesizer system built by Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff. They connected different synthesizers so they could work together as one instrument.

TONTO was used on multiple Stevie Wonder and Isley Brothers albums in the 1970s. The National Music Centre acquired it in 2013.

Look at all those cables and controls. Someone had to know how to turn that into something you’d want to listen to again and again.

What’s the Stevie Wonder song you never skip?

Next time you watch Superman III, keep your eyes on the buildings.

That’s the St. Louis Hotel in Calgary’s East Village, used for the bar scene with Christopher Reeve’s Superman in the 1983 film.

It gives you a whole other reason to revisit an old movie. You’re watching a little piece of Calgary’s past, too.

What’s a Calgary location you recognised on screen before anyone pointed it out?

Before Alberta became a major filming destination, Nell Shipman was already proving that women could lead the story.

Back to God’s Country was released in 1919 and filmed partly near Lesser Slave Lake. Shipman starred in it, co-wrote it and helped shape a heroine who survives through courage, wilderness knowledge and a deep connection with animals.

A century later, it still feels surprisingly modern.

That helicopter scene? That’s Calgary. 🚁

The opening of Exit Wounds (2001), starring Steven Seagal and DMX, was filmed on Centre Street Bridge.

The crew caught a small window while the bridge was closed for renovations. For five days, staged explosions, gunfire and low-flying helicopters turned it into an action set, with Calgarians watching from the riverbanks.

Makes your next drive across it feel a little different.

Did you spot the bridge when you watched the movie, or are you finding out now? If you saw the filming, tell us what you remember.

At Jack Singer, even the room gets tuned.

The wooden canopy above the stage can be raised or lowered. Together with sound curtains, it helps adjust the hall’s acoustics for different performances.

Beautiful architecture, with a job to do.

Next time you’re at Werklund Centre, take a look above the stage before the lights go down.

Which performance at Jack Singer has stayed with you?

👀 That’s Marilyn Monroe outside a cabin in Banff in 1953. But take a closer look at the raft in the next photo.

Those figures are dummies standing in for Monroe and Robert Mitchum during filming of River of No Return.

The production filmed in Banff and Jasper, with real rivers and rapids to work around. The dummies are a wonderful little glimpse of how the movie was made, beyond the famous faces.

Seventy-three years later, you can still look through these photographs and spot something you missed.

Does your family have a story about a movie being filmed in Alberta? Maybe someone was an extra, worked on a crew or happened to be there. What’s the story?

Imagine heading to a theatre just to hear a radio.

In 1922, the Palace hosted Calgary’s first public radio demonstration. The audience listened to three members of the Palace orchestra performing over the Calgary Herald’s radio station.

You can play almost anything on your phone now. Back then, hearing music arrive over the air was something to gather for.

And look at that room. The ceiling, the curtains, the orchestra pit. This photograph shows the interior a few years later, rather than the demonstration itself.

What’s the first Calgary radio station you remember being hooked on?

Dr. Diana Monea’s story extends far beyond the optometrist’s chair. The Legacy of a Butterfly is a 13-minute documentary portrait of one of Alberta’s longest-practicing female optometrists—and a woman whose life has been shaped by ambition, reinvention, and resilience.

Raised on a Saskatchewan farm, Monea dreamed of a bigger life, first exploring fashion and imagination before heading to Waterloo in the 1970s. There, she was the only woman in her optometry class. She later established her first practice in Regina, despite having no business background, and became the family breadwinner. For Monea, eyewear was more than a necessity: it was a way to express personality and style.

After moving to Calgary, her friendship with designer Paul Hardy helped deepen her sense of identity and connection to the community. Today, Monea is known as an Albertan icon, author, grandmother, and philanthropist. Along the way, she has faced loss, setbacks, and scams, yet maintained her distinctive flair and determination.

Structured in three acts-caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly the film traces Monea’s transformation and celebrates a woman who has continually made her own way and claimed her place in the spotlight.

Written and directed by Monique Barrie, who also serves as executive producer, the film is produced by Barrie and Griffin Cork. Ana Malick co-wrote the screenplay, Josef Wright is the cinematographer, and Morgan Ermter is the editor. Makeup and hair by Lesia T. Bear. The cast includes Diana Monea, Paul Hardy, and Holly Allen.
