Your home can still have warranty coverage while the defect you’ve found is already outside its coverage period.

In Alberta, “10-year warranty” doesn’t mean everything is covered for ten years. Different parts of your home have different deadlines.

Before paying for a repair, find your policy, confirm the coverage start date and ask your warranty provider whether the issue qualifies. Keep dated photos and copies of your correspondence.

If you bought a newer resale home, there may still be coverage left. The warranty stays with the property, but buying it doesn’t restart the clock.

If you run a restaurant, you know an empty table can mean lost income, even when the staff and kitchen are ready.

If you’re the customer, you might have a genuine emergency. A cancellation fee can feel very different from that side of the table.

Our take: protecting a booking is reasonable. Surprising someone with the terms isn’t.

It’s hard to hand over work when your name and reputation are attached to it. “I’ll just do it myself” can feel like the safest option.

Start smaller. Pick one routine decision. Explain what a good result looks like, set clear limits and agree on when someone needs to call you. Review the first few together.

You don’t have to lower your standards to stop being involved in everything.
