Art for a world in transition.

📍 District Oakland @districtoak
🎨 Original art by CALIBIRD
🎶 Sounds by Zak Zodiak @zakzodiak_
✨ Co-hosted by my homeslice Annias @anniasb3

The Fifth World is an evolving body of work about transformation, interconnection, nature, love, chaos, and the worlds we imagine into being. These drawings have lived quietly within me for a long time, and I’m excited to bring them together in a space where art and sound can exist in shared rhythm.

Come step into the world of CALIBIRD.

Thank you to @hunterthegatherersf for the feature!

✨Ancient Animosities✨

The storyline behind this series is centered on deeply rooted, intergenerational conflicts between groups, often stemming from ancestral betrayals, land disputes, or theological differences.

This piece illustrates the peace-loving matriarchal societies who live in diverse communities but are constantly threatened by the ‘exploratory’ activities of the techno plutocrats who lie to gain entry to plunder resources. Their world is under constant surveillance (“the eyes”) as they wish to extract both materials and their most valuable resource—their spiritual energies.

Created by hand, pencil and ink. Scanned. Color in Adobe. No AI.

Someone said my art is like “Hieronymus Bosch meets The Simpsons” 😄

✨The Healer Between Heartbeats✨

They say the hummingbird came from the breath between worlds — too fast to be caught, too gentle to be feared.

She appears where pain settles quietly, where the air holds memory. Her wings do not fight the wind — they weave through it, stitching together what was torn by time.

The elders believe she carries the voices of those who left too soon. Not to speak for them, but to remind us: love never leaves, it just changes shape.

Her feathers shimmer with stories. Her flight is a prayer. She doesn’t stay long. Healing never does.

✨But where she lands, something begins again✨

Strong and tiny earth spirit
I thank you for your presence in my life,
For the fortune that follows in your wake,
For the fertility you bring,
For the medicine you gift to the world.
Moving through water and along the earth,
Teaching lessons of transformation,
Singing to greet the rain,
Toad,
You are ever welcome on my path.

I started this illustration while at Casa Grande Mountain Retreat @casagrande_pr in 2023. It’s an ode to all the toads, frogs and lizards I saw. I added mountain forest spirits who will always watch out for the tiny creatures of the rainforests. by @calibird_sf

The Rift

This piece maps the quiet, heavy terrain of a relationship pulling apart, and the sudden, internal thaw of a return. Grounded in the metaphor of a continental rift, the work visualizes how we harden our edges into a protective crust when communication stretches thin.

Pulling inspiration from Fiona Apple’s “Pale September,” the imagery captures the exact moment our defensive armor collapses at our feet. It explores the profound vulnerability required to let someone step right back into the open wounds of a past separation.

The Space Between Thoughts/Portrait of Rich Medina

A portrait of consciousness as much as a portrait of a person. Thoughts expand beyond the figure through memories, observations, ancestors, imagined worlds, and thoughts (the bubbles)—fragments of an interior dialogue made visible.

The presence of ancestors suggests that consciousness is not entirely individual: we carry inherited memories, histories, gestures, teachings, rhythms, and ways of seeing that existed before us. The figures surrounding the portrait can therefore be read not only as thoughts, but as presences—people and histories continuing to move through the living.

Thank you to everyone who came out and spent time with The Fifth World. It meant so much to see the work gathered together, and even more to see people moving through it, looking closely, talking, listening, and sharing the space.

I loved presenting the show as its own little ecosystem—allowing the pieces to speak to one another while bringing a bit of the living world inside. The pokeweed + wild fennel arrangements came straight from my backyard, imperfect and unruly, carrying the scent and spirit of home into the room.

Art, nature, music, community.
A world in transition. A shared rhythm.

Thank you for being part of it. 🌿💛

These pieces are on display for a few months at @districtoak

Beacon of Light

This hangs in a permanent position at The Hub/Mercy Housing in Sunnydale SF. This piece envisions Sunnydale as a place where people, nature, and community flourish together. At the heart of the composition stands a serene guardian crowned with native CA flowers, embodying care, resilience, and the nurturing spirit that guides a neighborhood through transformation. Surrounding her, bees, butterflies, birds, wildflowers, flowing water, and radiant sunlight form a vibrant living ecosystem, symbolizing the interconnected relationships that sustain both people and place.

Stylistically, the artwork draws from my love for Art Nouveau, a mild obsession with line quality and trippy color schemes 😄, the vibrant visual language of 1960s and 1970s psychedelic poster art while remaining contemporary. I added McLaren Park in the distance, plus a CA Quail, the endangered Mission Blue butterfly, the native poppy and monkey flower, with local amphibians surrounding the creek.

I had family who lived on Velasco. And my pop worked at the Cow Palace… by @calibird_sf
