One of the absolute best things about the crazy journey of medical training, is the incredible people you meet along the way. You really do find your people and it’s the best. So much of this life is about relationships. Nurture them!

(But also I constantly don’t feel like I’m keeping in touch with people enough but you know ilysm 💗💗)

Women suffer far too much. Most of us are taught from a young age that suffering is part of being a woman, and then this idea is normalized throughout our lives.

But I’m here to tell you, no ma’am. Periods should be non events, they shouldn’t take you out and ruin plans. Urinary incontinence is a medical problem, not “just what happens” after having kids. My list goes on and on.

As an OBGYN, I love helping women realize they don’t have to just live with things that are negatively affecting their quality of life. There are treatments, there are options, and you deserve to suffer less.

One thing you should know about us is that we’re OBSESSED with the vulvovaginal #microbiome — also we might have coined a new diagnosis, “hotel vaginitis” 😆

Women suffer an insane amount. And the amount of suffering we as women are taught is normal? INSANE. As an OBGYN I see a huge part of my role as helping reduce women’s suffering. So if a woman tells me she’s bleeding through products and clothes? We’re going to fix it. Leaking with every cough laugh sneeze? Nope, referrals for you ma’am. Vaginal dryness, that’s an absolutely not. I have treatments for you, done. So that’s me. Hi, follow along for women’s health education, learn how to advocate for yourself and STOP SUFFERING!

1. Estradiol patch + nighty oral micronized progesterone — far and away my most commonly prescribed regimen. Won’t suppress ovulation, low dose background bioidentical hormones.

2. Estradiol patch + cyclic progesterone — force a regular cycle, luteal progesterone whether ovulation occurs or not.

3. Slynd + estradiol patch — contraception, endometrial protection, estrogen for symptom management.

4. Estradiol gel + Mirena IUD — adhesive sensitivity? No problem, gel or spray options can be great, no increased blood clot risk just like patch. Mirena for endometrial protection, contraception and period control.

GenX ladies - We survived latchkey childhoods, Aqua Net, cigarette smoke, drinking from the garden hose, Boomer Parents, and riding in cars without seatbelts.

And now you’re telling us menopause is going to take us down? Cute.

Yes, we’re hot.
Yes, we’re tired.
Yes, we walked into this room for something and have no idea what it was.

But we also have decades of experience, significantly fewer f*cks to give, and the confidence that comes from realizing half the things we spent our 20s worrying about were complete nonsense. We’ve been training for chaos since the nineteen hundreds.

I recently heard that menopause is like going through puberty without caring what other people think and I loved that so much. So we decided to turn this transition into a celebration.

If you want a fun night out to lean into your perimenopause era - join me and my friends OBGYN @calibmd and hostess with the mostess, owner of @tandem.carrboro Emma.

MONDAY 11/2, Build @ Tandem Carrboro, bring your friends and your 80s attitude.

We should care about heavy periods because they lead to iron deficiency. Iron deficiency leads to iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia impacts every organ system within the human body. This means your heart health, your brain health, your immune system function, your reproductive health. All of these things are impacted if you have iron deficiency anemia. Because heavy menstrual bleeding is often underreported, under addressed, and generally accepted by society is OK, that means that about 20% of women are walking around losing more blood than their body can reasonably replace. That means that women are not functioning at their best, and we should really not be accepting this as normal or OK.
Xoxo thanks for coming to my TED talk 🤍

1. Induction is recommended in the 41st week of #pregnancy unless delivery is medically indicated prior
2. 39 week (and 40 week) elective inductions are safe, and for some populations are risk reducing
3. If an #induction is recommended to you by your obstetrics team, it’s because ongoing pregnancy is considered riskier than delivery at that gestational age
4. There are multiple ways to induce #labor, and the methods used depend on your starting cervical exam, prior obstetric history, clinician training, and hospital policies
5. Foley balloons sound scarier than they are, and they are not inflated inside the cervical canal, but above it
6. #Pitocin is not the enemy, it’s a safe medication with a short half life that can be carefully titrated
7. Breaking water is the most important step in an induction (and for augmentation of labor), don’t delay this step if your OB or midwife is recommending it
8. Inductions are ditterent than natural labor, not better or worse taken in Raleigh, North Carolina by @calibmd

1. You might deliver on time, early, or “late”
2. Labor may come on its own, or you might need an induction
3. Your baby will likely be head down, but it’s not guaranteed
4. You could need operative assistance or a C-section to deliver your baby
5. You may have a perineal tear, sometimes these are severe or take a long time to recover from
6. Labor could take days, or may happen really fast
7. Pain management could look a lot of different ways, depending on you, your labor and your baby
8. Picking the medical team and support people that will help you feel comfortable navigating any of 1-7? Key.

Having a baby is really “choose your own adventure,” but it’s usually not us doing the choosing — it’s nature, your baby, and luck of the draw.

Talk to your obstetrics team, your friends, your family. Learn about different birth outcomes, not just your ideal birth. Listen to all the stories, ask questions, discuss “what if” scenarios.

Labor & delivery is a JOURNEY. Choose your obstetrics team, place of delivery, and support people so that you feel comfortable and safe while you navigate this next adventure.
