E ciudat felul în care m-am atașat de expoziția asta, deschisă de nici o săptămână. Vă încurajez - nu, vă îndemn - nicidecum, vă mărturisesc - da, vă mărturisesc că expoziția are o formă frumoasă și că mă simt impertinentă ori de câte ori folosesc cuvântul ăsta ca să descriu ceva. Poate mergeți să aruncați o privire, două, trei, pe strada Franceză, 4. O zi frumoasă. Sâc!

Nadina Stoica | 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗜 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀

Conceived as an affective archive, 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗜 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘀 brings together photographs made between 2020 and 2024, alongside journal notations and a video work from 2026, tracing a shifting relationship to place, memory, and time. Rather than following a linear chronology, the works unfold through fragments and recurring motifs, bringing different temporalities and modes of looking into relation.

The exhibition is accompanied by a soundscape created by Cosmo Stanciu / @unchained.c

Băi reci, dar dacă-mi permiteți 😮‍💨 suflete calde 😭🤪

Am întâlnit o doamnă, 91 ani, pe care am ajutat-o să intre-n apă, se tot justifica și era puțin cam supărată că nu mai are mobilitatea pe care o avea anul trecut. Zicea că vine de 60 de ani la băi și că stă cam două săptămâni, acum când a venit a vorbit cu un băiat drăguț pe care l-a plătit binișor s-o ducă și s-o aducă. Trei ore am stat de vorbă, era o plăcere s-o asculți. Ne-a și pasat niște sfaturi și complimente că suntem fete drăguțe și bune. Ne-a zis să nu mâncăm sărat, doar gustos și să nu mâncăm zahăr că-i periculos. Mai zicea că toată viața a trăit fără efort și că mereu a avut grijă să fie dichisită și drăguță, manierată. Mai zicea că a avut înălțimea de unu șaizeci, și că face exerciții dimineața și seara, cu mâinile sus și jos de o sută de ori, și la bătrânețe a scăzut doar 10 cm și de asta nu are cocoașă. Măi dar avea un stil de-a spune drăguț/draguță atât de dulce, și cum ne țineam așa toate trei de mână în apă, până la genunchi, peak womanhood experience. Loved it

𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 is officially alive. :)

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening. For a few hours, the exhibition was inhabited exactly as we had hoped: through conversations, lovely encounters, prolonged looking, and the occasional glass of wine.

No exhibition is ever the work of one person, so this is also our way of saying thank you to those who made it all happen: @noemimeilman & @thestation.ro for making sure the exhibition didn't remain our best-kept secret. @theinstitutero & @naivwinery for their support. @nsts_archives for the photographs we'll return to. @mihai.sovaiala for the graphic design and @iulia.pasarica for the exhibition design.

Cătălin Burcea (b. 1966) is a Romanian visual artist. He has exhibited, among others, at New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA); Bucharest Biennale 10 - (BB10); JCE Biennale (6) - Beffroi de Montrouge, Paris; National Contemporary Art Museum, Bucharest; Calina Gallery, Timișoara; ARCUB Gabroveni, Bucharest; Contemporary Art Ruhr, Essen; Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw; Spatiu Intact Gallery, Cluj-Napoca; Knoll Gallery, Vienna. Claudia Retegan (n. 1984) este artistă vizuală, designer, curatoare și galeristă care lucrează cu mediul fotografic în București. În 2008, a absolvit studiile de licență la Universitatea din Leeds, Marea Britanie. Timp de patru ani a lucrat ca art director în București, în agenții de publicitate. În 2012, s-a mutat la New York pentru a studia fotografia la International Center of Photography, unde a lucrat ca asistent universitar, și și-a deschis propriul atelier în Brooklyn, luând parte la mai multe expoziții de grup. Doi ani mai târziu, s-a mutat în Los Angeles, pentru a urma masteratul în fotografie la California Institute of the Arts.

De-a lungul anilor și-a autopublicat, a conceput cărți de artist, a curatoriat și a luat parte la mai multe expoziții de grup. Unele dintre aceste proiecte au fost expuse la Rencontres d’Arles (FR), Bushwick Open Studios (NY), MOMA PS1 Art Book Fair (NY), Luhring Augustine (NY), Photoville (NY), Photo LA, Unseen (NL). Cel mai recent demers al ei este 2/3 Galeria, deschisă în 2020 în București, axată pe expunerea artiștilor contemporani cu o pasiune pentru mediul fotografic. by @calinacoman

Ștefania Iakab Chirca, Skis, fiberglass, resin, 2024

Ștefania Iakab Chirca (b. 2001, Cluj-Napoca) is a sculptor living and working in Timișoara, Romania. She holds both a BA and an MA in Sculpture and Ceramics from the Faculty of Arts and Design in Timișoara. Her artistic practice explores material and symbolic contrasts, with a sustained interest in the tension between the natural and the artificial. Working with a variety of materials, Ștefania Iakab primarily employs animal hides and synthetic resins, combining them to produce works both visually compelling and sensory charged. Through these unlikely pairings, she creates sculptural forms that are simultaneously familiar and uncanny, evoking recognizable objects while resisting clear categorization. Existing in an in-between space, her sculptures navigate the boundaries between cultural memory, speculative and posthumanist thought.

In DEAD END, Iakab presents Skis, a hybrid sculptural object that reconfigures the familiar form of a pair of skis by replacing one end with oversized human feet. Possessing translucent hues of bruised violet and ashen, slightly necrotic tones, the resin feet evoke flesh suspended in an uncertain state between vitality and decay. Laid out horizontally, the work recalls the clinical display of an autopsy table, bringing organic and synthetic matter into close proximity, though not as opposites, but as manifestations of the same material continuum.

Sasha Bandi (n. 1989) trăiește și lucrează în Cluj-Napoca. Practica sa este fluentă între medii precum desenul, pictura, sculptura și instalația. Provenind dintr-un background în care a studiat grafica, universul său vizual se desfășoară prin intermediul unor narațiuni ilustrative marcate de o perspectivă critică. Uneori scrie, și multe dintre lucrările sale își au esența în acest background, unde inventează personaje simbolice care evoluează în timp în lucrările sale. Ironia, servindu-i drept perspectivă, expune lacunele societale în călătorii pline atât de suferință, cât și de amuzament.

În încercarea de a exprima teme și preocupări obscure, întunecate și reprimate, lucrările lui Sasha păstrează o abordare moralistă, adâncindu-se în cele mai pure emoții, adesea influențate de certitudinea morții sau de sentimentul pierderii. Multe dintre lucrările sale recente ilustrează consecințele pierderii contactului cu inocența copilăriei și erodarea încrederii în aspectele fundamentale ale ființei. Prin exprimarea suferinței și a furiei, arta lui Sasha dezvăluie fără scuze adevărul crud al experienței umane - de la dragoste la probleme sociale. Deși evită declarațiile politice, Sasha încorporează ocazional elemente politice, punând accentul pe libertatea personală în detrimentul ideologiilor rigide.

Răzvan Năstase este un artist vizual multidisciplinar care trăiește și lucrează în București. A absolvit Departamentul de Pictură al Universității Naționale de Arte din București, iar practica sa artistică se desfășoară la intersecția dintre fotografie, pictură și instalație. Interesul său pentru materialitate, lumină și memorie se reflectă într-un demers bazat pe experiment și pe explorarea atentă a suprafeței, by @calinacoman

“Across a wide range of recent exhibition texts, I keep noticing a proliferation of certain recurring phrases that sometimes makes me pause, and at other times begins to grate. I am referring to formulations such as “the exhibition investigates,” the artist “reconstructs,” the work “interrogates,” or “seeks to uncover,” while the viewer is consistently cast as a “witness” and the image is routinely framed as “evidence.” Something in the vocabulary shaping contemporary curatorial discourse draws heavily, and almost habitually, on the language of forensics and criminal investigation. This exhibition is less concerned with an explicit, thematic staging of crime and more with how an investigative imaginary has come to permeate curatorial language through this repeated lexical borrowing, which in turn shifts the status of the image. The works are drawn into a process of discursive validation. If investigation now hangs over exhibitions as a defining atmosphere, we might as well follow through on the metaphor and take its implications to their limit – carry it to its breaking point, to a dead-end – and treat the exhibition as an open case file. From there, a set of questions inevitably arises: who is the victim, and who are the suspects? Who produces the official version of events, and what is actually being investigated when an exhibition claims to “investigate”? And who, ultimately, draws the identikit – the composite sketch – of the exhibition itself?”
