Oh Dylan

I miss you more and more each day. Growing older has made your death so much harder. I wish you got to graduate high school, go to college, and live a life full of what you love.

I think about mental illness a lot. I wish people understood that you cannot just tell someone to get up and make a different choice when their brain is sick. We expect people to do things because they look easy to us, but you don’t know what it takes for someone else to get out of bed, shower, eat, go to work, go to class, or just get through a normal day. A sick brain does not work the same way a healthy one does, and that doesn’t make the person lazy, gross, selfish, or not trying. I wish people could understand that before they have to lose someone to it.

Dylan was a person before he became a statistic.
He was a son. He was a big brother. A grandson, a cousin, a nephew, classmate, teammate, and a mentor. He was loved. He mattered. And he still does.

I wish you were here. I love you, and I fucking miss you. Happy birthday D
