This painting of dear friend @christipalitto and her beloved Mabel is a very big deal to me, given the history behind it. I’m grateful to @thelastwrites for sticking with me and trusting in me throughout the entire process, from start to finish.

Kicking off 2024 refreshed, refocused, and recalibrated 🙌🏼

Paying respects to Dolly Parton in Chicago’s south side.
I’m so sorry I couldn’t be part of it, but a piece of me is there with the mural, without a doubt.
Thank you @jedi_noche for the photos 🙏🏼🥹🤍

@mos_chicago ended a few weeks ago, and I still have a high from the event! I painted the Dolly Parton mural for MOS, and I got this post together a few days before Dolly Day. But the sentiment is still the same; my heart is with you all 💖

A bunch of thank-you’s are in order:
@pazzesco_art 🏅 @lekstylez 🙏🏼 @notpadawan and @justnhale for the invaluable help; @leylandadams @sugknigt @ren_rock.art @milt1coronado and @magnificentgnomevangoh for being pleasures to work with, @el_dtel and Olga Bautista for being community pillars and trusting in me; @stefskills for offering your space (I’ll never forget it); @rustospraypaint for coming thru with the tough stuff; and @jedi_noche and the rest of the crew for making sure we were taken care of in every way.

Further: @getoffyourasstencity for the ladder and generosity, as well as your fellow homies whose names I don’t currently remember 🫣 but I’m sure that will change on my return to Chicago 🦾 @oldgringophoto and @digital_visuals__ for the photos, @mizenhead61 for the photos, footage and friendship, and @rosebud211 you already know, girl 👩🏻‍🤝‍👩🏾 And everyone I met this year: it was an absolute joy! I needed these vibes more than you know ❤️‍🔥
Apologies for any names I may have missed!

As far as I’m concerned (coming from a born-and-bred New Yorker), Chicago is neck-and-neck with NYC regarding a healthy combo of street art and community. Chicago has officially cemented a place in my heart.

I worked for this legend. It was a complicated time for me, but I learned everything I could while I was at Peter Max’s studio.

It was there where I learned to love acrylic paint. I was enemies with it for years, since I was a “classically trained oil painter”. 🤣 How wrong I was, and how humbled I became, once I started to master the medium.

I grew up with his work, when it was still in the public consciousness (and should still be—if not, get familiar). So working for him was surreal. A titan in the pop art world of the 60’s, he inspired me to face bold color head-on. And meeting him, of course, was one of my dreams come true.

I know you were going through it. Hope you’re at peace now, Peter Max. One love ✌🏼🤍🙏🏼

Being back again for @booneavewalls this year was coming home, literally and figuratively. The moment I was given the area I would be painting at, the wheels started turning, and I decided to make the front gates be part of the art itself, should it remain closed. The subject matter is simple (a frightened/confused brown child), but when placed behind the gate…suffice it to say, this art piece is my personal form of subtle protest against what is going on with La Migra, disproportionately affecting Latinos and brown people in NYC.

Showing gratitude to @silo1ne_fx and @wencod for having me back, @erotica67 @swissmissnyc @jodidareal for the help and being amazing ladies to work alongside, and especially my aunt who lives in Ecuador, @mechegonzaga , who blessed me with her likeness as a child (swipe for original photo reference).

(Fun fact: a good portion of the cans once belonged to the late, great @christipalitto —thanks for looking out for me, amiga, and massive gratitude to @thelastwrites for helping to make that happen 🕊️)

New York City did not disappoint 🗽🚫🧊

From our first photo together in 2003, to Christi’s final art piece, permanently installed at Denver International Airport, which continues to inspire me. “Commemorating” one year since her passing, this is what I was able to come up with, to sum up Christi’s creative and productive time on earth, where I was concerned and from my limited point of view (and thanks to all who contributed to the footage neither I nor Christi was able to capture).

There were so many sides to her, and so many moments. Needless to say, it was difficult to edit it down to a digestible amount. But for those who didn’t know her, here’s a snippet: mother, partner, sister, friend, and a layered, creative soul. A tragically short snippet, just like her life.

Christi, I hope you know by now that you are loved. Please keep looking out. #mural #art #painting #explore #Soledad_Inspired by @call_her_al

Are we still doing that 10-year challenge?
Throwback to 2016, when I contributed for Sing For Hope. When “Art For All” came from the heart, and truly changed the course of my life.

Three things I would tell my 2016 self if I saw her face-to-face:

• You may not understand it now, but please, I urge you to be grateful for not knowing the future beforehand. I know how you operate, and knowing your future, good or bad, will only make you anxious.
• If you were sure about something when you made the decision, and it didn’t turn out as you had planned, please do not consider it a waste of time. Your future self will thank you for not second-guessing, and that tough skin you are currently building will help you in other aspects of life.
• That being said, apply to that @singforhope piano-painting call. It will open up certain doors for you that will lead you to places that not even your highest expectations can anticipate.

X Siempre,
AL.

Artist Preview Night for @visual_aids at the @berrycampbell Gallery. The last time I contributed to their annual show, Postcards From the Edge, was in 2017 (see last slide)! It’s a joy to be back to participate for an amazing cause.
Guess which one is mine 👀
