35 today and COL turns 3 next month and I’m so grateful to work with the most beautiful, profound people. Thank you to the artists who make my days never feel like a job. We work for you, to share your stories, and create a space for you to feel seen.

Our tiny operation, spontaneously conceived one night with my partner in crime @juliaqli has grown into a community space for the Bay Area, supported by locals and art lovers from all over the world. We now have two locations, Julia opened a café next door, @lulufresh.co, and we’re planning exhibitions for years to come with the artists who make it all possible.

Cheers to chasing what you love, building something from nothing, and to my family, husband, friends, and artists who make this wild and precious life so meaningful.

A rare sentimental post. I started interning in the art world over 15 years ago (shoutout to @tfeulmer !) because I loved falling into paintings as a teenager. It was always a dream to open my own space but I didn’t think it was possible until I met the force that is @juliaqli and she told me that we could do it. Firstly, thank you to the artists who have trusted us with their work. It is a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Thank you to my amazing family who have always had way too much faith in my abilities (@mktinajones ). To my friends who should have blocked my calls by now, who have listened to me cry and complain over the years and have cheered with me during the various small victories and especially when I felt like giving up. And to my incredible partner @lault10 who has taught me what unconditional support is. Without further ado, COL Gallery opens September 15th, named in honor of Richard Nonas, who is no longer with us but who still holds a huge space in our hearts and minds (@richardnonasofficial @janmeissnerphotos ). Now open “Esteban Samayoa: Somethin’ Bout the East!!”

Continued gratitude to Esteban for believing in us and being a part of our COL family. Esteban has been in our crazy dream since the beginning and his solo show is the culmination of three years building together.

Esteban continues to push boundaries, experiment, and create deeply poetic work about the power of community. We remain committed to building an artists-first space alongside people like Esteban who lead with generosity of vision and action, who care about collaboration and value uplifting one another.

A huge thank you again to Esteban and to everyone who visits COL, collects art from us, and engages with our programming near and far. I was 10 years old when I started talking about art and never stopped. I look forward to talking about Esteban’s practice for many more years to come. It is a great privilege to work with people I love and respect every day and to champion all of the makers, thinkers, and dreamers.

Another incredible event with the great Esteban Samayoa! We are so proud of everything Esteban has accomplished this year and are grateful to be a small part of his journey.

Launching artist residencies has always been a dream, and we’re immensely thankful to our entire team @jamestown.lp for making it possible. We look forward to a year of residencies, collaborative exhibitions, and public programming in our new space at Waterfront Plaza!

We remain committed to uplifting our local arts community and the artists who make it thrive. Support local, celebrate artists, and champion our beautiful Bay Area creative community.

Happy 35th Birthday!! From meeting in New York to traveling the world together (where you never complain about carrying all of my bags…) to constantly being the most supportive partner and friend, you are so loved.

Happy two-year anniversary to @colgallery.co !

Before we opened our doors, @juliaqli and I wrestled with what to call our space. We tried various combinations of our names, but none felt quite right—because this gallery was never really about us. It has always been about the artists we wanted to stand behind.

As if by fate, I kept returning to a work made by my late friend @richardnonasofficial in front of the Grand Palais in Paris—a sculpture he named “COL; the place between (2017).”

“For sculpture is that spatial, gap-between, that col between mountain peaks,” he wrote.

Richard’s words spoke to me then and still do. They remind us that art is not only about objects, but about the spaces and people around them—the tensions, contradictions, and encounters that shape the human experience. That COL, the lowest point between mountains, is where most art is made—not from the peaks of our lives, but from the valleys, the places of searching.

I started COL in one of those valleys, at a moment when I felt disenchanted by a world full of hatred, greed, and division. And yet, over these past two years, the gallery has reminded me that beauty can be found even in the darkest times—that art can reorient us toward hope, connection, and possibility.

Perhaps photographer @janmeissnerphotos said it best: “For me, art is simply the instruction manual on what it means to be human. Everything I’ve learned about life comes from books and paintings and music.”

Jan’s words prompted me, before we opened our doors, to write a note to myself about how I define success. What I continue to strive for: “At its core, if the space becomes a place for people to come together and share glimpses of what it means to be human—in all our complications and considerations and frailties and aspirations—then it will be a success for us.”

I think we have done that.

Happy two-year anniversary to COL!

When we opened our doors, it was with a simple but profound hope—that art could bring people together, spark conversation, and open new ways of seeing. Over these past two years, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with artists whose practices challenge, expand, and celebrate what it means to make art today. We’ve shared the voices of both emerging and historic artists, while welcoming collectors, neighbors, and visitors from around the world.

Anniversaries are moments of gratitude and ours belongs to the artists who trust us with their visions, the collectors who champion their work, and every person who has engaged with our space with curiosity and openness. COL is built on those relationships, and it’s because of you that we’ve grown into the place we are today.

34 today. Feeling deeply grateful for this past year. To getting engaged to the love of my life, for my endlessly supportive family and friends who continue to believe in me and for the joy of building something meaningful at @colgallery.co and @karlartsf

COL turns two next month and a huge thank you is owed to everyone who has been a part of it. Collaborating with the most incredible artists, my best friends and owning the gallery with my partner in crime @juliaqli is the most perfect birthday present of all.

Perhaps Kipling said it best:

“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools…If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!”

A huge thank you to @pureewil for featuring Susan Weil’s work in @next_avenue !

“Since her time at Black Mountain College, she’s explored the idea of fragmenting the female form and showing multiple perspectives at once,” Jones said. “We had a work in our show, “Three Moons,” with three wrapped canvases just to show the phases of the moon. She is interested in a multiplicity of views because that’s what life is. There’s not just one answer or one perspective — it’s showing all these perspectives at once.”

In her email, Weil addressed her use of layering and the female form. “You build a surface, and you add on to it and shift it. It’s working through an image through time, she wrote. “My work is part of my life and as I’m a female it comes out in my work.”
