Call to create one big social justice reading list!!!!

My heart breaks for what is happening in America right now. I have so many words and yet am still at a loss.

For months, my husband and I have been talking and curating a library of must-read social justice/coming of age books for our kids that speak to different experiences.

Books are such a powerful tool to learn about yourselves and others. These magical little vessels help shape empathetic individuals who then hopefully find themselves in a larger community to become change makers ❤️

It’s been a fun experiment to see what our different experiences had us both reading and what we missed then (and hello never-ending TBR)…

I wanted to continue to compile a list from a wider net and see what you would add.

📖 Book Review 📖 Twenty years ago, most of my reading was for grad school and these books slipped through my radar. Instead of being disappointed by this, I am looking at this as an amazing opportunity to discover these YA paranormal books with my own teenagers this October and I am thrilled! Bonus points for having a complete series published so no waiting for the next one to come out!

About the books:

It’s always fun to see what shows up as a #berkleypartner! This one was such an immersive read; thank you @berkleypub for the gifted copy. All Her Beautiful Deaths by A. Bushby is out now.

📖 Book Review 📖 Though many aspects of society and the human experience change over time, the one thing that seems to remain a constant is the fight so survive when life is so heavy. A. Rushby revives the Victorian era in this modern gothic horror that is absolutely perfect for an autumn read.

Despite the rapid changes with the Industrial Revolution in the Victorian era and our current moral and ethical debate over the use of artificial intelligence, grief remains a constant. And this novel evokes the depth of the heartache that accompanies loss, creating a relatable tone across the centuries. All Her Beautiful Deaths delivers chills as the past and present blend flawlessly in this hauntingly atmospheric read.

📖 Book Review 📖 Are you having a rainy Saturday thanks to this big old Nor’easter? While I totally get some plans are rained out, I am team stay at home and read in pajamas so I don’t have too much to complain about. And Simon always has the best books to send my way, including A Dangerous Bargain. Erin Cotter brings a sweeping historical mystery that transports readers back to the Italian Renaissance. I have not enjoyed a story with Leonard DaVinci reimagined so much since Ever After. A Dangerous Bargainnis beautifully written and richly atmospheric.

Thank you @blackstonepublishing for the eARC of Sometimes I Scare Myself by @jenevaroseauthor on @netgalley. What a treat to twirl into Spooky Season with @parkbooksmd at @marylandhall with this beautifully terrifying book (with sprayed edges).

📖 Book Review 📖 Growing up in a haunted house and still living in that same house, my life could indeed be classified a living horror story. And just like the title of Jeneva Rose’s latest publication, Sometimes I Scare Myself.

Why did I spend my childhood reading and watching scary stories when I could hear spooky things go bump in the night? I have no idea. Why do I still do it?!? I still do not have this answer.

Did I pick up this book excitedly? Yes…but only during broad daylight. This collection of short stories is the best thing to happen since Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Again, I promise I am not fast-forwarding time but it takes time to build a holiday collection for a mood reader and this one is out now!

I also have to somehow bury this one somewhere in the house so my teenagers naturally find this and fall in love with it on their own. The reality is that we know if Mom suggests they read it, it will never get read (even though they will absolutely love it)….the struggle of being a girl mom is real.
