This week I celebrated my first commencement as a full-time tenure-track professor.🥳

🎓Three years after walking across the stage to become a PhD, here I am living the dream I prayed for.

But to be honest, there were so many moments I wasn’t sure I’d ever make it here.

I’m proud of myself for staying the course.🥹 by @callmedrgary

Happy new semester from your favorite professor, Dr. Gary!💫 Here’s a little about my academic life, especially for those who are new to my page!

👩🏾‍🏫I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Black Studies and Ethnic Studies!✊🏾

🎓I have a PhD in Africology and African American Studies from 🦉Temple University (the first PhD program in Black Studies!), an MFA in Dance from 💃🏾The University of the Arts, an MA in History and eMPA in Public Policy from 🐅Texas Southern University (I’m a third generation alumna!), AND! a BA in History (with minors in Dance and Business Administration) from 🐾The University of Houston! Go Coogs! I’m literally working in all of my fields as a professor, nonprofit founder and executive director, historian, Africologist, choreographer and dance scholar, curator, and Afrocentric entrepreneur.

🌍I’m an Africologist (yes I study Africa and the African Diaspora for a living!) and Historian by training! I ain’t new to this, and I’m definitely true to this!

🍎I have taught and currently teach a wide range of courses around the Black Woman, Anti-Racism, the African Diaspora, U.S. History, Black History, World Dance, African Dance, Western Civilization, African Civilization, African Spirituality, Ethnic Studies, and so on! I’m a walking source of knowledge but not a gatekeeping one! I LOVE to teach and share my knowledge. What’s the point of having it if you can’t share it??!🤷🏾‍♀️

🤗I absolutely LOVE my students! I’ve had the opportunity to teach at several universities and colleges, ranging from HBCUs, HSIs, and PWIs! And let me tell you, I’ve been blessed by ALL of them. They learn so much from me but I learn so much from them too–they always leave me inspired and hopeful!

✍🏾I’m the author of @TheNewRedBook and have several academic publications, including some forthcoming, along with several other scholarly projects!

This year, I plan to share more content on my life as a prof! Follow @CallMeDrGary for all of my academic content!✨
😉And soon, I’ll be sharing what (and who) motivated me to start this new page, and why I chose this name! by @callmedrgary

As promised, I’m sharing a little more about why I created my new page, and why I chose the name @CallMeDrGary.

Imagine encountering people who refuse to call you by the title you earned, the title you worked extremely hard for.

Not out of confusion—because yes, that understandably happens—but out of deliberate refusal.
Because they decided that you and your degree aren’t valid.

This type of racist macro-aggression (because are they ever really “micro??”) echoes the experiences of my parents, grandparents, and ancestors who were called “boy” and “girl” instead of their names, or when people intentionally mis-pronoun or misgender someone.

For months, I debated over whether or not I should share this. (In the past, I’ve experienced real consequences for
for speaking out publicly against racism experienced within institutions.) But I decided I wouldn’t be silenced.

I am a professor of Black Studies. I teach courses on racism. I ask my students to be courageous. Remaining quiet would betray everything I stand for.

In this speech given last spring while a professor on Semester at Sea, I address what I experienced, and why calling me by my earned title, Dr. Gary, in an academic setting, was not an option, but the requirement.

This is for my ancestors who didn’t have the choice.

I’ll be sharing a clip from the speech with audio tomorrow. Stay tuned.✨ by @callmedrgary

Join Houston Botanic Garden on Texas Arbor Day — Friday 11/6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — for an evening of art, nature, and poetry with Dr. Lindsay Gary. Enjoy a discussion and reading of AncesTREE, her evocative collection of poems inspired by trees, the natural world, and ancestral connections. The program will consist of a social mix-and-mingle, a moderated discussion, a poetry reading, and an audience Q+A.

Later Texas Arbor Day weekend, return to the Garden, inspired by Dr. Gary's work, for Standing Tall: A Texas Tree Festival. This full-day, family-friendly event on Sunday 11/8, will feature a kids’ zone with tree-themed crafts and activities, guided walks to view and learn more about native trees around the Garden’s 132-acre site, a marketplace including food vendors, live entertainment, and more.

I’m a Black Professor, and here are my degrees!

🎓BA History ~ Magna Cum Laude | Minors: Dance, Business Administration | University of Houston🐾
🎓eMPA Public Policy | Texas Southern University🐅
🎓MA History | Texas Southern University🐅
🎓MFA Dance | University of the Arts🦄
🎓PhD Africology & African Studies | Temple University🦉

Not to mention my Graduate Certificates in African American Studies and Teaching in Higher Education! Using every single degree and certificate in the work I do!

And now y’all know my middle name.🙃

But most importantly, Black women make up fewer than 5% of all PhD holders in the United States. So when I look at these degrees, I see more than years of studying, research, and hard work. I think about the ancestors who fought so I could have opportunities they were denied. I think about how much it took for me to get here.

I worked hard for every single one of these degrees, and I’m proud of that. But I also know I didn’t get here alone.

If you’re a Black woman considering getting a master’s degree or a doctorate, do it! There’s room for all of us! Plus, I need some company!💜 by @callmedrgary

As a new tenure-track professor, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying academic conferences this year!🙌🏾Not only have I presented my research and participated in panels and author’s events, I’ve been more intentional than ever about connecting with fellow scholars.🫶🏾I love teaching and research, but these conferences have truly been filling me up!💫

And would I be an Africologist if I didn’t represent my roots through my style at these conferences??😆🌍

I’m excited to present my first in-person author talk and public poetry reading for my latest book, AncesTREE!

Join me at the Houston Public Library’s African American History Research Center at the Gregory School Campus next Thursday, October 8th.

I’m looking forward to sharing the story behind AncesTREE, reading selections from the collection, and connecting with all of you!✨ by @callmedrgary

Thank you @ASALHBHM for selecting me to present my research at the 111th Conference!♥️I had an amazing time screening my second documentary film, Our Elders Are Our Libraries,🎥 and sharing my presentation “Our Elders Are Our Libraries: Living Archives in the Age of Heightened Erasure.”

It is imperative in times such as these that we support intergenerational dialogue, and promote the leadership of both our wise elders AND our youth! Thanks to everyone who came out, especially to my fellow good doctor friend, Dr. Jalyce Taylor!💫Swipe for some highlights!✨ by @callmedrgary

Had an amazing time at the Association of Black Women Historians’ Luncheon at the ASALH Conference!🧡It was so beautiful sharing space with so many other Black women historians—colleagues, mentors, and those who’ve paved the way for women like me!

It was a pleasure celebrating the honorees, meeting the founders and Dr. Nell Irvin Painter (who I found out was actually born in Houston!), and welcoming ABWH’s newest director, my former professor, Dr. Karen Kossie-Chernyshev. A beautiful, full-circle day indeed! Swipe for a few highlights.✨ by @callmedrgary
