Winter is officially on the calendar ❄️
The first 2026/27 opening dates are rolling in, and the race to first chair is already taking shape. Breck and Copper kick things off Nov 6, while the usual early-season suspects wait for temps and snow to make their move.

So, who gets first chair?

Dates straight from the resorts.
* = tentative.
All openings weather-dependent.

Another winter forecast dropped. Before you plan your season around it, worth a look at where it comes from.

Last August the Almanac called for cold and snowy in Colorado, average temps and wet across the Great Basin, and impressive totals in the Pacific Northwest. What showed up was the 2nd-warmest US winter in 131 years, Colorado’s warmest February on record, and Utah’s lowest snowpack ever measured. Most resorts finished between 43% and 59% of average.

This year they’re calling for cold and snowy again across the northern Rockies.

NOAA’s actual signal for 26/27: an El Niño Advisory is in effect, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event through fall and winter.

No model is the truth. Seasonal forecasting is hard and everyone misses. But there’s a difference between a forecast that publishes its method so you can check it later, and one that doesn’t. The Almanac’s formula is a trade secret. When researchers at Illinois tested it, it got temperature right 50.7% of the time and precipitation 51.9%.

Plan the season however you want. Just know which numbers you’re leaning on.

Season’s around the corner. We’ll know soon enough. Until then — pray for snow.

There’s a lot of buzz about this El Niño winter. Here’s what the official NOAA maps actually say: winners, losers, and everything between. ❄️
El Niño is confirmed — 81% odds of a “very strong” event, top-tier alongside ‘97 and ‘15. But “strong” doesn’t mean snow everywhere. It means the storm track shifts, and that creates clear winners and losers.
Winners: the Southwest & Southern Rockies.
The gamble: California & the Sierra.
The coin flip: Utah & northern Colorado.
And the region nobody’s posting about, the PNW & Northern Rockies, is leaning below normal.
Swipe through for the full breakdown, straight from the maps. We’ll track it all season and tell you what’s actually happening, not what’s trending.

25/26 season by the numbers ❄️

The West had one of its roughest winters in modern memory — 9 states set warmest-winter records, snowpack across most basins finished below 50% of normal, and resorts from Tahoe to Utah closed weeks early.
But it wasn’t bad everywhere. Jay Peak ripped the fastest 300” in resort history. The Powder Highway saw a 75-year December record at Lake Louise. The Northeast finished above average across the board.
One season is just one season. But the numbers don’t lie.
Bring it on 26/27 🌨️ The bar is currently low out West.
