train with CGS (me!!)

i’ve worked with athletes helping them with their goals - from getting faster at fell running, to a 3 hour marathon and a first Ironman

plans that fit around regular schedules and daily life, building consistent habits that stick and move athletes closer to their results

send me a DM and let’s chat about your goals by @callum.gs

finding the best buns in Stockholm @lillebrorsbageri

here for a couple of days with work, and what better way to explore the city than on the feet

and a little bonus as my latest injuries appear to be on the mend after the big half

while I’ve been taking time to recover from the marathon, a few things stood out:

1. marathons take longer to recover from than I’d imagined - my legs felt fine well before the rest of my body caught up, so I’ve been easing back in rather than rushing to train again

2. strength training made a massive difference to how my body handled the race - I only had 6-8 weeks of running in the lead up, but I was strength training 2x per week with plenty of physio on top, so my muscles weren’t the limiter

3. threshold training built race-specific fitness quickly - most of my training was easy, and the quality sessions were controlled, sub-max efforts, which let me increase my training load while still recovering fast enough for the next session

a few more days of easing back in, then it’s into the build for the next marathon 👀

back racing @swisscitymarathon

this was supposed to be my main race for 2026 but after crashing my bike and damaging my ACL back in the spring I was just happy to make it to the start line

to come away with an 8 minute pb (also an injury-stricken effort) and no injuries was more than I could have hoped for

such a beautiful course along Lake Luzern, although those hills at the beginning were absolutely brutal

time for some well earned rest, then a big winter training block ahead of spring marathon season 👀 by @callum.gs

SwissCityMarathon Lucerne 2026

More to come but super happy to come away with no injuries, and to sneak a pb at 3:24:58

nearly three years in Switzerland now, so figured I’ve got to start catering to my German-speaking followers 🫶

excuse my Schweizerdeutsch lack of genders, mixing up siebzehn and siebzig etc.

kudos to my German coach and cameraman @valli.32

not a quick fix, just training that fits your actual week

back with another running bakery review, just without the pastries

lovely to get back to our old local parkrun in Highbury and throw in a couple of hot laps for good measure

sadly lot 103 didn’t pull through on the pastries but the coffee was still banging

where’s next?

ticking off the Gurnigel pass in Kanton Bern

a cracking day out with @valli.32, hitting more of the Swiss bucketlist climbs

p.s. stick around until the end for my German intro

want a faster 5k? stop only running 5ks

400m reps sit right at or just above 5k pace, and the short recoveries let you stack far more time at that intensity than a continuous run ever could

that’s how you build tolerance for the effort that gets you your time

the session: building up to 8-12 x 400m at 5k pace or a touch quicker, 60-90 sec easy jog between

add a rep or trim the rest each week and your 5k pace stops feeling like a sprint to survive

$how I fuel my training and racing at a fraction of the normal cost of products like maurten two main ingredients - maltodextrin and fructose - i also tend to add some electrolytes, mainly for flavour, but also to help replenish what’s being lost through exercise glucose (from maltodextrin) is absorbed through the SGLT1 transporter, which maxes out at roughly 60 g/h, where fructose uses a separate transporter, GLUT5, so it doesn’t compete for the same capacity i tend to use a 2:1 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose, but some studies suggest that for higher intakes (>100g an hour), a 1:0.8 ratio can be more effective any other fuelling hacks out there? #running #cycling #fuelling by @callum.gs$
