What a stressful release this has been 🥺
At age 14 with a grade 3 heart murmur, it was a tough decision to put him under for a dental.

We did what we thought was right for Boris. With our neighbors @catrescuersfilm on our side, we have been watching him like hawks.

He was a bit disoriented the first few days and not very interested in food. And being so thin and fragile was a big concern.

Today is day 5 outside and his appetite has finally increased and he is looking more like himself again.

Now we try and build some winter weight before the winter is upon us.

We love you, Boris

Making decisions for unowned cats is hard🥺

But we try to think of them as our own brothers and sisters.

As the great Jed Bartlett once said — decisions are made by those who show up.

So we showed up.

Not just for Boris and Crooked Tail. But for Henry, Arthur, Stanley and so many others.

We spent over $2K this month just showing up.

We don’t weigh our decisions on cost but on quality of life.

Because life in pain is no life at all.

Sometimes CH cats like Kat need a little extra help with dinner 🤷‍♀️
Wobbly cats have a hard time getting to all the food as they tend to push it all around the plate.
So I just keep piling it in the center for Kat. That way she is able to get the most out of her dinner.

Special needs cats require a little more patience than most but are worth every bit of effort.

Dear GiGi,
We are so sad to say goodbye 💔
You were one of the 9 cats already here when Moms purchased this house. A true original. And the first to judge us through the windows.😹

A bit of a loner, you liked to eat after everyone else was finished. You sure loved your food. But you loved catnip even more.

In 2024 Moms took you to the vet and got you all fixed up. We knew about the grade 3 heart murmur and the compromised kidneys — but you had a few good years left in you.

You declined very quickly. And we are so grateful we were able to help you pass peacefully.

You were loved. You were fed. You were safe.
You mattered.

That was the promise Moms made to all 9 of you when she moved in.

Godspeed sweet girl.

13 years ago we moved into our house in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, and within the first week we discovered two mother cats sitting on our deck with 3 kittens each waiting for a handout: “Mama” a tuxedo and Gray Gray a sleek Russian Blue. (Our kind neighbors Dave and Alyse were out of town and not there to feed them.)

The two cats were very bonded – they were born under our next-door neighbor’s deck and we suspect that Mama may have been Gray Gray’s mother.

Gray Gray was what Sassee from our film called “An Originator” - she got us into doing TNR and eventually making our film about 4 great Brooklyn rescuers: Tara, Sassee, Claire and Stu.

While Gray Gray tolerated the other outdoor cats, she became a loner after Mama passed and visibly mourned her absence. She spent much of the last year of her life next door on Larry and Elise’s deck, coming to eat every morning and evening and camp out in front of the sliding glass door. Normally shy, she regularly hung out next to the table whenever we ate outside, hoping for a handout - turns out Larry gave her a taste for human food. Elise also fed her when she decided not to stroll over. We all spoiled her in our own ways.

Gray Gray was a fixture in our lives for 13 years - part of the gang of 14 that has dwindled now to three. We made sure that she and her mates had security and warm shelters during the winters. Our deck and backyard were their home. Thanks to our neighbor Cally and “Melvin’s Outdoor Cat Vet Fund”, we also got them occasional vet care. Gray Gray was one of the healthiest. We thought she’d be the last one standing. But life is often unpredictable.

Our back porch and garden feels a lot lonelier today. 13 years - we’d grown accustomed to her face.
Rest in Peace dear Gray Gray, aka GiGi. We miss you.

This is the hardest post to write❤️✌️
Big Boi’s last chapter with us…
Since November 4th Moms has given every free moment to Big Boi.

The first slow blink.
The first purr.
The first play.
All of it. Together.

What’s next for Big Boi?
We honestly don’t know yet.

But the King deserves his own kingdom.
And sometimes loving someone means asking what’s best for THEM — not for you.

Whatever happens — Big Boi is never going back outside.
And if Moms foster fails? 😄
Well. It wouldn’t be the first time. 🐾

Ultimately — we’ll let Big Boi decide.

I have been saying ‘NO’ quite a bit lately 😹😹😹
Some cats who have lived a long time outside can be very food driven like Big Boi. 🐈
Socializing and fostering this special kid for @gowanuscats and @bookstorecats and trying not let him get too fat with a house full of cats is a challenge for sure!
