The ice cream was a hit. The weather behaved. Everyone had fun. You even managed to get a family photo where nobody looked personally offended.

So why is someone now sobbing in the back seat over something that happened three hours ago?

Because a wonderful day can still be an enormous day for a little person.

All that excitement, movement, laughter and adventure takes energy. Sometimes there's simply nothing left by the journey home.

The tears don't mean the day went wrong.

The little engine just ran out of steam. 🚂🤍

Sometimes you’re not only missing how little they were.

You’re missing the version of you who knew exactly which cup they wanted, which song worked in the car, how they liked their toast cut and what time the afternoon nap had to happen before everyone completely lost the plot. 😂

That version of you belonged to that season too.

Your child grew out of it.

And in ways you probably didn’t notice at the time, so did you.

Maybe that’s why certain ages ache a little when we remember them.

We remember who we were there, too. 🤍

You spend years being their favourite person.

The first face they search for. The hand they reach for. The person who somehow needs to witness every drawing, jump and extremely questionable dance move.

Then their world gets bigger.

Friends matter differently. New interests appear. Parts of their life begin happening without you.

It can sting, even when you know this is exactly what growing is supposed to look like.

You didn’t disappear from their universe.

It simply grew. 🤍

We celebrate firsts because we know to look for them.

First steps. First words. First day of school. Cameras ready. Everyone paying attention.

Lasts are sneakier.

The final piggyback probably felt like every other piggyback. The last funny mispronunciation was corrected without ceremony. That little hand stopped reaching for yours gradually enough that you may not remember when it happened.

Some parts of childhood don’t end with an announcement.

They simply happen for the last time while everyone thinks there’ll be another.

It’s almost offensive how innocent they look asleep. 😂

An hour ago, there were tears, sharp words and at least one person convinced the other was being completely unreasonable.

Then you walk past their room later and there they are.

Cheek on the pillow. Hair everywhere. Completely peaceful.

And somehow, the frustration that felt enormous earlier has softened around the edges.
Nothing about the hard moment changed.

You just remembered there was a small person underneath it. 🤍🌙

There is a very specific moment when dressing up stops being dressing up.

The cape goes on. The hat is secured. The monster feet are fitted.

And suddenly your child is unavailable.

In their place stands a witch, a vampire, a monster, or some highly specific creature whose backstory you are expected to understand immediately. 🎃😂

So when they correct you for using their actual name, perhaps don’t argue.

You’re speaking to someone who underwent a complete transformation in the lounge room five minutes ago.

A little imagination can make childhood feel enormous.

Sometimes the loveliest thing we can do is believe with them. 🧙‍♀️🦇✨

There’s a point at bedtime when even the sweetest little request can feel suspiciously personal.
😂

Water? Of course.
Another story? Sure.
Toilet again? Naturally.

And somehow the person who handled an entire day loses their patience over one tiny thing at 8:17pm.

It was never really about the water.

Sometimes the final request simply arrives when there’s nothing left in the cup.

That doesn’t excuse the moment we wish we’d handled differently.

But it can help us understand it, repair it, and meet tomorrow with a little more awareness. 🤍

Knowing better doesn’t always mean doing better.

Sometimes you hear your own voice getting sharper and know exactly where this is heading.

And then you press the button anyway. 🔴😂

That part can be hard to admit without immediately reaching for an excuse.

But guilt doesn’t have to become a character assessment.

Maybe it can simply say, “That wasn’t how I wanted to show up.”

Then comes the part that matters.

Owning it. Repairing it. And trying differently next time. 🤍

Some parenting days are lovely.

And some feel like you’ve completed breakfast, school, snacks, laundry, arguments, dinner, bath time and seventeen completely unnecessary negotiations, only to discover it is somehow still 6:14pm. 😂

You can love your children completely and still think:
I did not enjoy today.

That sentence doesn’t need a guilt filled explanation attached to it.

Some days are just hard to enjoy.

Thankfully, bedtime is on the board somewhere. 🤍

Sometimes they leave for a few hours and you expect to miss them immediately.

Instead, you notice how peaceful the house is.

Nobody is asking where their shoes are. Nobody needs a snack while already eating a snack. Nobody has followed you into the bathroom with an urgent story. 😂

And then guilt taps you on the shoulder.

But enjoying the space doesn’t cancel out the love.

You can adore your children and still feel your whole body soften when nobody needs you for a while.

Maybe missing them doesn’t have to start the second they leave. 🤍

Sometimes we say sorry and, without meaning to, wait for something back.

A hug.
An “it’s okay.”
A little sign that we’ve been forgiven and can finally stop feeling awful.

But our apology isn’t a bill our child now has to settle.

We can own what happened, mean every word and make things right where we can. What comes back to us, and when, isn’t ours to decide.

Sometimes sorry has to sit on the scale all by itself. 🤍
