Want to reintroduce myself. šŸ‘‹

Hi, I’m Yasha — the artist behind Caloswords.

I create live calligraphy, engraving, painting, and luxury personalization experiences for retail activations, brand events, corporate gatherings, and sports experiences across the U.S.

I absolutely love what I do. There’s something incredibly rewarding about taking an ordinary item and turning it into a meaningful keepsake while meeting amazing people along the way.

If I’m honest… I hate being on camera šŸ˜‚, but here’s a little hair flip because… why not?

These photos were taken during an ALO customization event in Toronto, where I had the opportunity to personalize products live for guests.

A little more about me: I’m a wife, a proud mom to a wonderful little boy, and a dog mom. By day, I work in tech sales, and by evenings and weekends, you’ll usually find me at events doing what I love most—creating personalized experiences for brands and their customers.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible brands and meet so many talented event professionals, fellow artists, and wonderful guests. I’m truly grateful for every opportunity and excited for what’s next.

Thanks for following along. I’m looking forward to sharing more behind-the-scenes moments, event highlights, and the craftsmanship behind every personalized piece.

I’d love to get to know you too! If you’re new here, say hello in the comments.

Someone saw a dog I painted… and decided I should paint luxury watches. šŸ¶āŒššŸŽØ

That’s the POWER of a portfolio!

Here’s something I want every aspiring artist to understand:

Your portfolio doesn’t just show people what you’ve done. It helps them imagine what you COULD do.

I wasn’t showcasing luxury watch paintings. I was simply sharing my artwork.

But someone saw my dog painting, recognized my artistic skills, and imagined how they could translate into something completely different.

And that opened the door to an opportunity I hadn’t even considered!

✨ The lesson? Don’t wait until you have your dream clients to start building your portfolio.

Paint what you love. Practice different techniques. Photograph your work. Share your creativity.

Because you never know who’s watching or what opportunities they might see in your skills.

Your next client might hire you for something you’ve never done before.

⌚✨ Here are a few snippets from my 3-day live painting activation with Tapper’s, where I had the opportunity to bring luxury timepieces to life through art!

PART 5: How to Start a Live Event Art Business šŸŽØ

Let’s talk about something I struggled with when I started: PRICING! šŸ’°

When I booked my early events, I had no idea how to price my services. Was I charging too much? Too little? Would the client say no?

Here’s what I’ve learned about pricing live art events:

1ļøāƒ£ Your time is more than the event hours.
A 4-hour event doesn’t mean 4 hours of work. Include preparation, setup, breakdown, and communication.

2ļøāƒ£ Calculate your expenses.
Think about supplies, equipment, travel, parking, accommodations, and any other costs.

3ļøāƒ£ Know your speed.
How many guests can you realistically personalize for per hour? This helps you determine whether the event needs additional artists.

4ļøāƒ£ Understand what you’re offering.
You’re not just selling calligraphy, engraving, or painting. You’re creating a personalized experience for the brand and its guests.

5ļøāƒ£ Price for profit, not just to get booked.
After expenses and taxes, your business still needs to make money. Don’t automatically lower your prices because you’re afraid of losing an opportunity.

✨ One thing I wish I knew earlier: Being affordable isn’t the same as being valuable.

I’m sharing a FREE Instagram series where I go deeper into how to start and grow a live event art business—from finding clients to pricing, bookings, and working with brands.

Follow along for Part 9: How to turn an inquiry into a paid booking! šŸ¤

Save this for when you’re preparing your first quote.

The biggest shift I made as an artist wasn’t learning a new creative skill. It was learning to think like a business owner.

When you’re starting out, it’s easy to believe you need more experience, more followers, better equipment, or a perfect portfolio before someone will pay you.

I used to question so many things, too. Am I experienced enough? What should I charge? Why would a brand hire me when there are so many other talented artists?

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Confidence doesn’t always come before action. Sometimes it comes from taking action.

You build confidence when you create your first portfolio piece, send that uncomfortable email, quote your price, book your first event, and realize someone is willing to pay for your creativity.

And rejection? It’s part of building a business. An unanswered email doesn’t mean your art isn’t valuable. A client declining your quote doesn’t automatically mean you’re charging too much.

You have to stop treating every setback as proof that you’re not good enough.

Instead, start asking yourself:

✨ What can I learn from this?

✨ What can I improve?

✨ What is one action I can take today?

You don’t need to be the most talented artist in the room. You need to be willing to learn the business side of your craft, put yourself out there, and keep building.

Your art is your skill. Learning how to sell it is another skill entirely.

And both can be developed.

I’m sharing what I’ve learned about turning creative skills into paid opportunities with brands, corporate events, and live experiences. Follow along if you’re building your own creative business. šŸ¤

If you want to learn how to get into the live event industry as an artist, go back to Part 3 and follow this series. I’m sharing what I’ve learned while building my own business.

One thing I’ve learned: people need to be able to find you before they can hire you.

And your online presence is more than Instagram. Think about Instagram, TikTok, your website, Google and LinkedIn.

Your website should clearly explain what you do and how to hire you. Instagram and TikTok should show the experience—not just finished artwork, but you working, your setup, the process and what guests experience. LinkedIn can help you get in front of event planners, agencies and brands.

And you do not need thousands of followers. You need the right person to find you and immediately understand what they can hire you for.

If you don’t have your dream clients yet, create samples of the work you want to be hired for and start showing it.

Your online presence isn’t just about getting followers. It’s about getting found—and getting hired.

Save this and follow for Part 5.

Having a great portfolio is only the beginning.

The next step is getting it in front of the right people.

If I were starting a live event art business, I would first figure out who is actually hiring artists for the type of work I want to do.

For example:

šŸ”„ Engraving? Look at fragrance, beauty, jewelry and luxury retail brands.
āœšŸ½ Calligraphy? Look at weddings, luxury gifting, retail and corporate events.
šŸŽØ Product painting? Look at brands doing launches, pop-ups and customer activations.
šŸ‘©šŸ½ā€šŸŽØ Portraits/fashion illustration? Look at fashion, beauty, hospitality and experiential events.

And don’t just search for ā€œartist opportunities.ā€

Look for the people creating the experiences where your art could be used.

That means:
✨ Event planners
✨ Experiential marketing agencies
✨ PR agencies
✨ Brand marketing teams
✨ Retailers
✨ Corporate event teams

Follow them. Study the events they produce. Connect with them. Go to industry events. And most importantly, show them work that makes sense for what they do.

Because you don’t need everyone to know your name.

You need the right people to remember you when an opportunity comes up.

And some of the best opportunities can come from relationships you build long before there’s a job to offer.

This is Part 3 of my series: How to Get Into the Live Event Industry.

Part 1 → Find your skill + turn it into an event service
Part 2 → Build a portfolio around the clients you want
Part 3 → Get your work in front of the right people

PART 2 — BUILD A PORTFOLIO THAT GETS YOU BOOKED šŸŽØ

Your portfolio isn’t just there to show that you’re talented.

It should help a potential client or hiring manager see you working for them.

If I wanted to build my business around engraving for fragrance brands, I wouldn’t fill my portfolio with random artwork.

I’d create a portfolio that looks like the kind of work I want to get hired for.

šŸ”„ Engraving on fragrance bottles
āœšŸ½ Different fonts and personalization styles
šŸŽØ Painting + engraving if that’s a service I offer
✨ Luxury-looking finishes and details
šŸ“ø Photos that actually feel like a fragrance brand activation

For example, if I wanted to work with Dior, I’d study the type of products, aesthetic and customer experience they create—and make portfolio pieces that feel aligned with that world.

Why?

Because when a hiring manager sees your portfolio, you want them to immediately think:

ā€œI can see this artist doing this at our event.ā€

Your portfolio should answer that question before you even get on the phone.

So don’t just ask:

ā€œWhat work can I put in my portfolio?ā€

Ask:

ā€œWhat do I want to get hired to do?ā€

Then build your portfolio around THAT.

This is Part 2 of my series on starting a live event art business.

āž”ļø  Follow for Part 3, where I’ll talk about how to start getting your work in front of the people who can actually hire you.

First, I’d ask myself:

What kind of artist am I—and can my skill translate into something people want at events?

āœšŸ½ Calligraphy? Personalize boxes, bags, tags, cards, gifts and packaging—especially great for weddings and holiday activations.

šŸ”„ Engraving? One of the most popular live personalization services. Think fragrance bottles, glassware, leather goods and corporate gifts.

šŸŽØ Acrylic painting? Paint bottles, bags, shoes, jackets, canvases and other products LIVE.

šŸ’§ Watercolor? Guest portraits, fashion illustrations, stationery and keepsake artwork.

šŸ‘©šŸ½ā€šŸŽØ Portrait art? Quick guest portraits, fashion sketches and digital illustrations can become memorable event experiences.

The goal isn’t to learn every type of art.

Start with the skill you already have and ask:
ā€œWhat can I create LIVE, for whom, and on what product?ā€

This is Part 1 of my series on how to start a live event art business.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from doing live events is that the artwork is only one part of the job.

šŸŽØ THE ARTIST
You’re creating the actual work—often quickly, consistently and in front of guests—while making sure every piece still meets your standard.

šŸŽÆ THE ACTIVATION MANAGER
You’re thinking about the entire setup: Where does the guest start? How does the line move? How many people can you serve? Do you have enough supplies? What happens when 10 people show up at once?

šŸ‘„ THE TEAM LEAD
If you bring an assistant or another artist, you’re responsible for making sure everyone knows what they’re doing, when they’re doing it and how the activation should run.

šŸ¤ THE GUEST EXPERIENCE
You’re interacting with the people you’re creating for. You’re greeting them, confirming what they want, answering questions, managing expectations and making the experience feel special—not rushed or chaotic.

šŸ’° THE BUSINESS OWNER
And then there’s everything the guest never sees: quoting the event, negotiating details, contracts, invoices, payments, supplies, travel, expenses and making sure the job actually makes financial sense.

So yes, you’re an artist. But you’re also running an entire experience.

And the more you understand these different roles, the more confidently you can show up—and charge for the value you actually bring.

Relationships matter more than you think. šŸ¤

This is actually how I got this event.

Through a friend @inkdandetched_calligraphy I’ve known for a few years who thought of me when an opportunity came up—and reached out because she knew we could work well together.

And honestly, this is how genuine relationships in the event industry work.

It’s not always about constantly pitching or asking, ā€œDo you have any work for me?ā€

Sometimes it’s simply about doing great work, being someone people enjoy working with, staying connected, and building genuine relationships over time.

My #1 tip for artists who want to get into live events?

Get to know people in your industry.

Other artists.
Event planners.
Brand teams.
Agencies.
Photographers.
Anyone you genuinely connect with.

You never know when a relationship can turn into an opportunity—and sometimes, the best part is getting to work alongside people you actually enjoy. šŸ«¶šŸ½

The work is better when you’re surrounded by good people.
