Nobel Laureate Rudy Marcus, Caltech's John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry, passed away on July 16, 2026. The prolific chemist, who approached theory with infinite curiosity and the background of an experimentalist, was five days shy of his 103rd birthday.

This alumni couple have endowed a SURF, which they’ve named Ingenuity, so that a new generation of students can engage in research and discover where their curiosity takes them.

"Vlad and I entered Caltech and met at frosh camp," Jean Wang says. "In the years since, we've grown in many dimensions including having a family, and we're happy to be able to share and give back to the community together."

Fifty years ago, on July 20, 1976, the first photograph came back from the surface of Mars. The voice describing it to the world was a Techer's.

Al Hibbs (BS '45, PhD '55) earned both of his physics degrees at Caltech and spent decades as the "Voice of JPL." As Viking 1's first image loaded onto the screen line by line, Hibbs told the audience what Mars looked like up close.

He wasn't the only Techer who worked on the mission. Look back 50 years at the first pictures from the surface and the alumni behind them by clicking the link in our bio. by @caltechalumni

Being a CAMP West LA mentor may be easier than you think!

Alumni mentors arrive before students for brunch, a brief program, and orientation before mentoring sessions begin at 12:45 p.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m.

We currently have 41 registered mentors representing various fields and now, we’re looking for nine more alumni to help deepen that range. Alumni with experience in AI, space, engineering, science, business, or another career path are encouraged to apply to mentor.

Your perspective could help students explore opportunities they may not otherwise encounter. Learn mo at the link in our bio. by @caltechalumni

In an excerpt from a 2022 oral history, former president Jean-Lou Chameau recalls how a chance encounter with students grew into a campus-wide harvest, and eventually, a $5 million bottle of olive oil. Read more at the link in our bio. by @caltechalumni

Caroline Paules (BS '19) spent eight years volunteering with unhoused neighbors in Pasadena, handing out sandwiches most weeks, before she connected the problem to her training. As she told Pasadena Weekly, it took years to occur to her that a mechanical engineer might do something about the housing shortage she was watching up close.

CAMP West LA is looking for 13 more alumni mentors to join us on Saturday, August 8 at the Griffin Club Los Angeles.

This is a chance to help students think through career paths, graduate school, industry, and life after Caltech. The best mentor may be someone who has taken an interesting path, built something meaningful, hired a great team, or knows how to help students ask better questions.

If that sounds like you, register to mentor. If another Techer comes to mind, please share this opportunity and encourage them to join.

Register by Friday, July 24. Details at the link in our bio. by @caltechalumni
