Only just now getting a chance to say a massive thanks to everyone for their messages about my winning performance for BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2024 on Sunday. It was a joy to take part in the competition this year, largely down to the craic and good vibes from my fellow finalists, @ellamunro14, Matt Tighe, @eviejowaddell, @john.dew.7, and of course @ruairidh_macilleghlais; and indeed to the semifinalists, Scott, George, Saffron, Juliette, Blythe, and Robert. It was an absolute treat to get to play with @jennbutterworth, @jenaustinpiano and @signyjak, who took the role of “backing band” quite literally with the level of support they provided. 🌟 Thanks to @simonthoumire at @handsupfortrad, @joydunlop (pictured, hilariously), the lovely judging panel, and everybody behind the scenes at @bbcscotland @bbcradioscot @bbc.alba 🎥🎧 And of course, to my friends and family who came from far and wide to support me. 🫶🏻🫵🏻 Looking forward to the year ahead 💋🏆 #moremandolin #scottishmusic #traditionalmusic #mandolin #tradguitar #celticconnections #scotssong by @calummcilroy

We’re over the moon to have been nominated for Up and Coming Artist of the Year at this year’s Scots Trad Music Awards! We’ve had a great year of playing, writing, and recording, and to be nominated is a lovely way to round things off. You can vote for us now at the link in our bio! 🗳️ @handsupfortrad by @calummcilroy
This month marks a decade since I started playing this @mcilroyguitars. I was 18 and going to be starting at @rcsofficial after summer. I remember phoning up Dermot and asking if he could make me a guitar that was really good for flatpicking tunes but also loud for sessions - I can still count on one hand the amount of sessions I’ve been to since then, but it is indeed very good for that. After asking me how tall I was (which is a key deciding factor in getting a hefty machine like this), he told me that he’d not long sent a spruce top/walnut b/s guitar over to Manchester. So off I went, 18-year-old me on the bus from Aberdeen to Manchester and back in one day. The guitar was at a shop called Sounds Great Music, which is no longer there, and they were good as gold - picked me up at the train station and everything. I played the guitar for all of around 20 minutes and decided I was going home with it - it was unlike anything I’d played before. Well-balanced! I could hear every note I intended to play clear as day. And the tone was (and still is) amazing. I’d saved up all of my summer earnings from playing on the cèilidh trail, but needed to step out the front of the shop to phone my mum to see if my parents could loan me the other half… I’d never been so happy to be sitting on a Megabus, heading back to Aberdeen with my new @mcilroyguitars. It’s been through an affa lot since then and has been a companion, and I’m forever getting (unwarranted) compliments at gigs about how great it sounds. I shan’t need another geetar in my lifetime, but if I wanted one, I know where I’d go. here I am playing around with a new tune I’ve been putting together. Restring and de-chud for the @taranmandolins ahead of @glasgowmandolinretreat, which starts tonight! So buzzing to be back. Here’s one of the tunes I’ll be teaching this weekend. The classic Skinner march, The Duke of Fife’s Welcome to Deeside (and its famous ‘variations’) - in its own mandolin way… Tickets are available for the Sunday night concert. Come out and see @lbdiddle, @rain_of_animals, @hildalandmusic, @cahalen_morrison and I! by @calummcilroy
