“Barefaced”: a series of photos in my most authentic state of being.

Many of you are aware that I have lived majority of my life with a condition called Alopecia, and some of you may not. Alopecia is an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. This is not a life threatening condition however, it is severely life altering. There’s negatives that come with having the condition, and until a few years ago I allowed those negative symptoms to rule my perception of who I am and how I view myself. Well, thanks to some self-acceptance (a continuous journey), love from my support system, and to @digiemadephoto for capturing these photos, I am able to prove to not only myself but to others like me that Alopecia is not something to fear. I look forward exploring how it plays a role in this new journey. 💙

It’s Alopecia Awareness Month hehe
It’s amazing to see how much I’ve grown and embraced who I am. Today I am spending it by showing myself love and compassion and appreciating not only my beauty but the beauty of those around me and of the world we share. I have some fun projects being pushed this month that hold great value to me and relate a lot to my journey with Alopecia, stay tuned! Drop a 💙 to show your support for those with Alopecia! by @calxmae

“Teenage Angst”
Acrylic, WC, on canvas

“Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count” - Veronica Sawyer (Heathers 1989)

Im not sure what to call this style.. I initially thought pop art, the bright blue accents, pink, gold, and layered marks create an energetic surface, wouldn’t you say? However, it’s polluted by heavy blacks and distressed textures. Tension. Similar tension showcased in the film I referenced above (have you seen it?) Deliberately chaotic, its overlapping layers, scratches, drips, and smears, are meant to illustrate internal emotional turmoil becoming physically visible, accumulating evidence of conflict. Every mark can be read as another emotional incident, impulse, or consequence. My favorite part of the painting is the vertical lines to the right. They feel almost like a clinical sense of measurement and order but also it makes me feel restricted, fenced in, idk they’re eerie. The blue, green emerging from the darkness was an innocent attempt at having fun with the painting, now reflecting on it, I feel it was an act of youthful vitality that hasn’t completely disappeared, while the surrounding black and gray imply how quickly that innocence can become overwhelmed by anger, violence, or despair. I hope you recognize its central contradiction… adolescence can look colorful, energetic, and innocent on the surface while underneath it contains fear, rage, instability, and potentially devastating consequences. I have come to the conclusion that this piece is abstract expressionism. Thoughts? by @calxmae
