Locally based cinematographer @cambatten_ has been on assignments all over the globe. In between time-crucial shoots, he captures the unique life of working in some of the most remote and unforgiving regions of our world.

“I’m an opportunistic photographer more than I would say a considered one. Working in the Natural History and Documentary realm as a Cinematographer, I’ve been sent out for long durations to remarkable reaches across the world.

Filming documentary keeps you on edge as story moments and high value shots can happen any hour of the day. As a result, the opportunities for me to photograph are rare and cherished. It’s an incredible privilege to work in these locations, but it’s often also harsh and demanding for me physically and creatively.

Photographs, particularly film, allow me to stay grounded and inspired in these locations, and I usually set off with the intention to shoot at least one roll before getting back on the plane.

This set is a collection of images from the last 18 months, taken in Antarctica, Greenland, Morocco, and Brazil. Shot mostly on an Olympus XA, with the odd Canon AE-1 image. Film stock on rotation - HP5, Tri-X 400, Porta 400, ColorPlus 200“. by @cambatten_

The Morning.

A Gentle wake up, Dashi by our feet. Soft paws and sleepy eyes. Watching her watching the birds watching us. Coffee and swims, a few small moments the felt worth keeping. One night that will be forever remembered as my first night camping with family.

Family Camping -Moving Portrait Series (2/3)

The Evening.

Dashi thrilled to steal another pair of undies.

The Sitting Bull, enforcing his strength into baked potatoes, Miller ready in the slips cordon. Elvis, warming and warm by the fire.

The light lost, the camera not keeping up, it rained during dinner but we still played the Deal, drank Whiskey and waited with excitement until it was late enough to sneak into the tent with Dashi, unsure how she’d handle a night sleeping by our feet.

Less polished storytelling, more quiet moving portraits of people I love.

Simple weekend. Slow pace. Quality time in the bush.

Family Camping - Moving Portrait Series

The Afternoon.

My first time camping with family. First trip with the Dashi in the Bush. So much joy in our little quirky girl, swimming, learning, exploring.

I didn’t set out to film anything in particular, or ask anyone to do anything, I just wanted memories softer than photographs, and more real than produced moments. For years I’ve been on getaways like this and shot thousands of never used, never released photographs. This felt a world apart. Minimal unused moments, and a time capsule to look back on.

Three Chapters to this series, taken over 24 hours, west of the Northern Rivers. It’s the first time I’ve filmed something personal, inspired by a series @stefanjose_ recently released.

Allowing myself to spend time exploring my creativity for myself is something I’ve seldom done in my career, and I think I’ve found something I didn’t know I loved.

Moments we live through and cherish, captured without interference, observing, laughing, and partaking.

The good kind of weekend — simple, leisurely, creative without trying too hard.

Test roll shot on an Olympus XA, a beautiful little pocket film camera and a beautiful little time capsule from the last month or so.

Surf checks, gardening, family connections, yoga on the balcony, celebrating friends homes, big yarns, a few slices of Melbourne and some home grown broc. Living is good.

We wrapped our shoot on the Greenland Icecap and we had the gift of good weather for our lay day before departure from Kangerlussuaq. I heard from a local there was a crashed jet around 9km from town, that’s been there since the 60’s. Joel (our Finnish masters student) and I headed for a tramp through the tundra.

A beautiful and richly diverse landscape, the colour and range of Arctic flowers was incredible.

We knew there were Musk Ox in the area and had seen some from the helicopter on the way home from camp. Over each hill we convinced ourselves we’d see them, and only at the very end of the furthest point did we sight a little family. These guys are hunted for food and sport, so assuming they would be quite skittish I guided us out of sight from around 1km away, slowly creeping up while they grazed. We had the wind against us and we crested the last bit of terrain to stop around 50m from them. They were already alert and I had enough time to shoot a few stills, enjoy a few moments admiring them without the camera, before the bull rushed them away, not stopping until they were around 2km away from us.

We finished up with an Arctic swim in the alpine lakes after almost 1000m vert and an 18k stroll. One to remember ✨ taken in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland by @cambatten_

Coming home from a travel shoot is always an adjustment, a pace change, a reflection and a time to breathe again. It’s the nicest little joy I’ve discovered to drop the bag and have a wonder around the yard, taking in the changes in the garden, the angle of the sun, eat an orange off the tree, build a fire, play some vinyl and spend some time with my absolute darling. I appreciate it more and more and more ❤️ by @cambatten_
